The Berger Blanc Suisse shares its origins with both the White Shepherd and the White German Shepherd. All three of these breeds were developed from the white-coat line of the German Shepherd Dog during the early 20th century. The first German Shepherds bred for their white coat were seen in Germany during the 1880s but it wasn't until the early 20th century that a dedicated breeding program for white-coated German Shepherd Dogs appeared. The White Shepherd was officially recognized by the UKC in 1999 and the White German Shepherd Dog is recognized by the AKC. It wasn't until 2001 that the Berger Blanc Suisse was accepted on a provisional basis by the Federation Cynologique Internationale and it was officially accepted in 2011. Switzerland was the first country to officially recognize the White Shepherd as a distinct breed, which is why it is credited as the country of origin and the name was changed to White Swiss Shepherd (Berger Blanc Suisse) in many countries to reflect this. The White Swiss Shepherd was awarded provisional recognition as a breed by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) on November 26, 2002 as the Berger Blanc Suisse. The provisional status was changed to official recognition on July 5th, 2011 and the Berger Blanc Suisse breed is eligible for CACIB as of July 6th, 2011. The White Swiss Shepherd / White Shepherd popularity as a recognized breed has been growing rapidly throughout Europe and has even returned back to Germany, from which its roots began, and is acknowledged by the SV as a separate breed and not a white German Shepherd Dog.

Care

The Berger Blanc Suisse Shepherd requires minimal grooming. One of the best things do to on a daily basis is brushing their coat of medium-length double coat of pure white hair. The Berger Blanc Suisse has a way of always keeping clean, similar to cats even though they are white and with such a thick coat, they are clean.

Coat

The undercoat is short and fine while the outer coat is dense and harsh. Washing a couple times a year is required to keep the oils in their coat.

Training

It is recommended to start very early because Berger Blanc Suisse Shepherds are so smart. This breed is very intelligent is very easy to train. This breed can be trained for a variety of dog sports including agility, obedience, flyball, rack, and herding. These dogs have also been used for therapy and as assistance dogs. Early socialization is also recommended for this breed to prevent it from becoming shy or wary around strangers.

The Berger Blanc Suisse is naturally fit and agile with lots of stamina, energy and endurance.
