Before buying a puppy it is important to understand the associated costs of owning a dog. The annual cost or "upkeep" is often overlooked when determining a Spanish Water Dogs true ownership cost. When calculating your budget make sure you account for the price of food, vaccines, heartworm, deworming, flea control, vet bills, spay/neuter fees, grooming, dental care, food, training and supplies such as a collar, leash, crate, bed, bowls, bones, and toys. All of these items can add up quickly so make sure you estimate anywhere from $500 - $2,000 or more for the first year then about $500 - $1,000 or more every year thereafter to meet the annual financial obligations of your growing, loving dog.

The Spanish Water Dog will be in heat the same length as any other dog. The average length of a heat cycle is 3 weeks, however it can be up to 40 days. Yes! Your dog should be wearing a diaper. Whether it is the reusable ones that go in the wash, or the disposable ones, your girl should be wearing a diaper until her vulva is 100% back to normal. Many inexperienced people stop putting the diaper on their dog when they stop bleeding and vola! They get pregnant! That is because when the dog stops bleeding, but her vulva is still enlarged, she is ready to breed. Make sure not to stop until the vulva is back to normal size.
The Spanish Water Dog ranges from 38 cm (15 inches) - 52 cm (20.5 inches) in height depending on if the dog is male or female. Males will be taller than females. They weigh in at 14 kg (30 lbs) - 22 kg (50 lbs), again depending on if the dog is a male or female. Males, again will typically weigh more than females.

Spanish Water Dogs are a hassle to groom, but it does not shed. They are seriously active dogs and are very, very intelligent large dogs. They can adapt to almost any environment. It loves the water and, in fact, was bred to do various actions in the water. There are no toy or mini versions of this dog. This breed is prone to ear infections and hip dysplasia, so choose you breeder and dog wisely. I hope this information helps.
My Spanish Water Dog is adorable she is very active and quite small but loves the water and balls. SWD's will always be there for you, but if you don't want to groom them, they do it themselves. It does get annoying when people permanently ask if she is a Labradoodle. I hope this helps you.
As all breeds, some are great water dogs, some are great gundogs, some great herders. Your breeder should be able to help you acquire the right pup for level of your activity. Spanish Water Dogs are sheared 1-2 times a year depending on your activity level (leaves apt to catch in the cords). I have been a breeder of this magnificent breed since 2002 - their coats are easily maintained - no brushing. They do adapt to your energy level, but with their high drive, should be placed into a working home! SWD do weigh more than 10 pounds.
Had a SWD for 13 years. They are a small breed of dog. Easy to maintain, just shear once a month and bathe as needed. The breed is aloof, will bark at anyone. Then will calm down. They are bred to be working dogs, do they want to be active. Our Dog never wanted to be inside until it got dark. Always wanting to play. If left alone during the day they will find something to do,like chew on things due to boredom.
I had a SWD for 14.5 years and recently lost him. He was 35-38 lbs, and craved a good workout every day. I would not have put mine on a sailboat as a home unless I could let him swim to exhaustion every day.
My 8 year old started on a 36 ft sailboat with me in a marina from 8 weeks old. She loves it. Has gone on extended trips, kayaks. The grooming is easy once you learn how to shear them every 3 or 4 months.
