Before buying a puppy it is important to understand the associated costs of owning a dog. The annual cost or "upkeep" is often overlooked when determining a Shimas true ownership cost. When calculating your budget make sure you account for the price of food, vaccines, heartworm, deworming, flea control, vet bills, spay/neuter fees, grooming, dental care, food, training and supplies such as a collar, leash, crate, bed, bowls, bones, and toys. All of these items can add up quickly so make sure you estimate anywhere from $500 - $2,000 or more for the first year then about $500 - $1,000 or more every year thereafter to meet the annual financial obligations of your growing, loving dog.

There are pros and cons to every dog, purebred or not. When mixing breeds, you must do your research on all of the breeds mixed in to your dog to know what behavior or medical problems may or may not come about. The Shih Tzu's common health problems include Hypothyroidism, Intervertebral Disk Disease, portosystemic shunt of the liver, hip dysplasia, as well as eye and breathing problems. While the Maltese's common health problems include Patellar luxation, portosystemic shunt of the liver, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Hypoglycemia, White Dog Shaker Syndrome, Collapsed trachea, and Reversed Sneezing. Because there is some over-lap of health problems that can be in both breeds, making sure your breeders dogs are screened for those ones specifically is key. It is the same when it comes to pros of both breeds. The Maltese is a strong willed, loving, playful, agile dog that loves to be with his/her owner. As is the same with the Shih Tzu. Finding a breeder and then asking to speak to previous puppy owners is best to know what to look forward too/look out for when getting a Shima (Maltese/Shih Tzu cross).
Shima is not a breed, it's a mix. It is not AKC recognized because it's a mix.
