Also commonly referred to as the Canary Dog, the Presa Canario's are believed to be descended from the cross breeding of the extinct Bordino Majiro and imported English Mastiffs. This breed was developed in the 1800's specifically for dog fighting. During the 1940's dog fighting was outlawed and the Presa Canario nearly became extinct. This breed was revived during the 1970's by Dr. Carl Semencie, an American veterinarian.
A powerfully constructed breed, the Presa Canario is robust with a large head and chest. They exude an imposing presence and have a severe expression. They are agile, courageous, and unique. The Presa Canario breed has a deep, serious bark, docile with its family, but absolutely fierce and aggressive with strangers.
Presa Canario's require a very dominant owner and is not recommended for first time dog owners. The Presa Canario can be highly dangerous if placed with the wrong owner. However, with the right owner this breed is capable of being a loyal and devoted companion. They make excellent guard dogs as they are protective by nature of their family and territory and will not hesitate to attack anyone or anything it perceives as a threat. This breed is not suitable for homes with children or other pets.
Presa Canario's regular brushing of the coat with a firm bristle brush will minimize loose and dead hair. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. Health problems associated with this breed are hip dysplasia, demodex mange, a diminished immune system, and eyelid problems.
The Presa Canario has a short, flat, smooth single coat. The coat is coarse in texture, very fine, short on the ears, and slightly longer in length on the rear hindquarters and withers. This breed is an average shedder.
Intense early socialization and obedience training is an absolute must. Presa Canario owners must be fair, consistent, assertive, and set firm limitations. Mutual respect is crucial.
The Presa Canario breed is not recommended for apartment dwelling. They do best with a securely fenced yard or rural home. They are very athletic and enjoy daily exercise. The Presa must be securely leashed and muzzled when in public.

Annual cost of owning a Presa Canario puppy

Before buying a puppy it is important to understand the associated costs of owning a dog. The annual cost or "upkeep" is often overlooked when determining a Presa Canarios true ownership cost. When calculating your budget make sure you account for the price of food, vaccines, heartworm, deworming, flea control, vet bills, spay/neuter fees, grooming, dental care, food, training and supplies such as a collar, leash, crate, bed, bowls, bones, and toys. All of these items can add up quickly so make sure you estimate anywhere from $500 - $2,000 or more for the first year then about $500 - $1,000 or more every year thereafter to meet the annual financial obligations of your growing, loving dog.

I have a rescued a Bully Bordeaux. He was used for fighting, so I'm not sure how much of his temperament is due to nature or nurture? Anyway, the neighbor's Presa Canario got in my yard and locked with my Bully. I hate to suggest termination of pregnancy, but I'm a little hesitant of this breed mix? Any input or experience would be appreciated.

First off, thank you for taking in a rescue dog, especially one that was bred and used for fighting. The biggest problem with dogs that are taken from a fighting home and put up for adoption is determining their potential for fighting again or have aggressive tendencies. Some dogs never have an incident again, while others do. I believe being bred by a fighting home and raised to fight is a determining factor. Some dogs are purchased at a young age, while others are bred by other fighting dogs. This would be promoting the aggressive genes in the dam and sire to make better fighting dogs. Now, as for the litter, I would suggest the best thing be to terminate the pregnancy. It has nothing to do with the breeds, it is all about protecting your dog and not adding to the population of dogs that are looking for homes already. As long as it is early enough and your vet believes the female dog can go through the surgery, the best course of action is to have her spayed before the pregnancy goes any further. Depending on the age of the female dog, a pregnancy could be dangerous if she is too young or too old. Also, because the dog came into your yard and not vice versa, the neighbor is responsible for getting their dog spayed / terminating the pregnancy.

What is an average price range for well pedigreed Presa Canario puppy or trained adult dog with same pedigree?

The average price is between $1500.00 - $2000.00 per puppy. As for an already trained adult dog, it would depend on as what training you are hoping for, but I'm sure it would be over $2000.00.

What's a good exercise and way to keep her from snapping back at our older dogs dominate nature? Though you see so much about Presa Canarios not being suitable for a household of children, I have 4 from 9 months to 5 years. My children's absolute best friend but she also shares our household with our five-year-old blue Pit. When both females are in the house they're fine, but let them outside and it's a fight. My Presa Canario doesn't get much exercise because she won't move off our steps as she's almost completely attached to our Pit who hates her. Therefore, she gets very antsy in the house to play as she can no longer do it outside because our other dog will pick a fight. It only happened once, but our Pit stood no chance and is too dumb to give up her dominance; it became WW3 in my home. I muzzled both for almost three months, never again have had an issue, but I also keep them separated outside.

Within those three months, you could've found professional help. Granted, that could be tough, but the safety of the everybody is important.

How do I get my Presa Canario to stop pulling? I bought him a harness, but it has no effect on him. He has dislocated my shoulder a few times. Now I'm very wary when trying to walk him, what can I do?

Contact your local Positive Reinforcement trainer. He/She will be able to help you with this situation. Get a Halti, the harness tells the dog to pull.

Hello!! I worked with Shelter dogs to help them reach adoptability and family dogs on behavior and obedience for years. I have a few handouts I could send you to assist with leash walking if you're interested! My email is

You need to train your dog to walk with you instead of pulling you. Find a good trainer. It doesn't have to be a positive reinforcement trainer. Choose your preferred method of trainer. I suggest a balance trainer. Normally you will get fast results that work even with distractions.

Use a prone collar , Check out the K9 you tube on training with prone collar, Very helpful with my Presa

A remote training collar with multiple modes. I use them to train my dogs and have been the best training tool I have ever used.
