Before buying a puppy it is important to understand the associated costs of owning a dog. The annual cost or "upkeep" is often overlooked when determining a Munsterlanders true ownership cost. When calculating your budget make sure you account for the price of food, vaccines, heartworm, deworming, flea control, vet bills, spay/neuter fees, grooming, dental care, food, training and supplies such as a collar, leash, crate, bed, bowls, bones, and toys. All of these items can add up quickly so make sure you estimate anywhere from $500 - $2,000 or more for the first year then about $500 - $1,000 or more every year thereafter to meet the annual financial obligations of your growing, loving dog.

The Munsterlander, both the Large and Small version of the breed are bird-hunters. They were specifically bred to hunt, track and retriever crippled game birds. Though this does not mean they couldn't be trained to hunt hare; there were breeds created to hunt hare already that aren't the Munsterlander. Hounds, they were created to hunt hares and other game. The best breeds for hare hunting are Beagles, Dachshunds, Jack Russell Terriers, Redbone Coonhounds ( or other types of coonhounds), and the Weimaraner.
The previous comment is inaccurate in two ways: (1) The Small Munsterlander and Large Munsterlander are two completely different breeds. They are not a small and large version of the same breed. The Small Munsterlander is one of the 4 original versatile hunting breeds. The Large Munsterlander is a color variation of the German Longhaired Pointer and is a relatively newer breed. Both come from the Munster region in Germany. (2) Both the Small Munsterlander and Large Munsterlander are versatile hunting breeds. A versatile hunter is a "Pointing dog who hunts, tracks and retrieves both furred and feathered game, whether on land or in the water." The versatile breeds were developed for the one-dog sportsman - someone who wants a good family dog who can hunt any type of small game for the table. Therefore, either breed of Munsterlander are excellent hunters of hare and rabbit. In fact, in Germany they are primarily used for hunting hare and fox. A German breeding requirement for the Small Munsterlander is to have "laut," meaning they must bark at scent and/or sight of furred game.

An adult Musterlander should weigh in between 18 - 27 KG/40 - 60 lbs depending on if the dog is male or female. By placing your hands on your dogs sides as he/she is standing, you should be able to feel the ribs without having to put pressure on the dog. If you can see the ribs, then your dog is too thin. But if you have to press inwards to feel the ribs, then your dog could lose a little weight.
The small Munsterlander is not known for any knee problems, but that does not mean that they can not occur. Keeping your dog at a healthy weight and making sure he/she does not over-exert him/herself when he/she is a puppy are the best ways to keep your dog healthy and pain-free.
