Considered to be one of the oldest terriers, this breed originated in 18th century England as a foxhunter and ratter. Though not as popular as other terrier breeds, they are well known and established. Today the Smooth Fox Terrier is primarily a family companion and show dog.
The Smooth Fox Terrier is a well-proportioned, active, cheerful, and independent breed. They are elegant, eager, compact, and extremely courageous. This is a bold and daring breed that is not easily intimidated and possesses both beauty and brains.
A loyal and deeply devoted breed, the Smooth Fox Terrier is also loving and affectionate. They thrive on companionship and attention and do not do well if ignored or are left alone for extended periods of time. This breed does best in a home with older considerate children. Regarded as one of the most aggressive breeds they are not suited for homes with other pets. They are wary of strangers and make excellent watchdogs. Smooth Fox Terriers are not recommended for the novice, apathetic, or sedentary owner.
The Smooth Fox Terrier needs occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush and professional stripping of the coat twice a year. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. This breed is prone to such health issues as deafness, postnasal drip, cataracts, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, lens luxation, and distichiasis.
The coat of the Smooth Fox Terrier is dense, short, flat, and smooth. It is also quite abundant and covers not only the entire body, but the stomach and underside of the thighs as well. The color of the coat is predominately white with black or brown markings. This breed is an average shedder.
This breed requires early intensive and extensive socialization and obedience training. The Smooth Fox Terrier is willful, will challenge authority, and attempt to be dominant. They are prone to excessive barking. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods but must have an experienced owner and handler. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, consistency, and patience. The Smooth Fox Terrier displays talent in agility, fly ball, tracking, and hunting.
Boisterous and playful, the Smooth Fox Terrier requires daily physical exercise and mental stimulation. They benefit from and enjoy securely leashed walks, family play sessions such as ball and Frisbee, and a safely fenced area to freely romp and run in. Smooth Fox Terriers will become destructive and bark incessantly if bored or lonely. They will do okay in an apartment provided they are given sufficient exercise, attention, and stimulation.

Annual cost of owning a Smooth Fox Terrier puppy

Before buying a puppy it is important to understand the associated costs of owning a dog. The annual cost or "upkeep" is often overlooked when determining a Smooth Fox Terriers true ownership cost. When calculating your budget make sure you account for the price of food, vaccines, heartworm, deworming, flea control, vet bills, spay/neuter fees, grooming, dental care, food, training and supplies such as a collar, leash, crate, bed, bowls, bones, and toys. All of these items can add up quickly so make sure you estimate anywhere from $500 - $2,000 or more for the first year then about $500 - $1,000 or more every year thereafter to meet the annual financial obligations of your growing, loving dog.

I really love the smooth fox terrier. However I also want to adopt an adult cat. I have watched several videos that say sft’s can’t get along with cats. If I socialize my pets together can my smooth live with a cat?

The Smooth Fox Terrier has a high prey drive, yes. However, if you look for a breeder that has a show line of this breed, sometimes they tend to have a little less prey drive. This is because the dogs need to be able to ignore all of the distractions of the other dogs at the dog show running around, both while the dog is at rest, running, and posing. Then, if you socialize your puppy to an established cat in your home, then it should be fine. Make sure your cat has his / her own space where the dog can not get too. Somewhere high up, or using a baby gate to block off a room. This will ensure your cat has a place to go if the dog is being annoying, and can leave the stressful area. Supervise all interactions between your puppy and cat at all times for a long time. You do not want your pup to accidentally get scratched and hurt by the cat if the dog is pestering him / her.

My husband has allergies, and that's how I came across this wonderful breed. Are Smooth Fox Terriers a good choice for someone who has allergies to pets, dander etc.? Our kids are dying for a pet, and we are strongly considering this breed (so adorable). We don't have a front gate though - 3 fenced-in sides of the property though.

Sadly, no. The Smooth Fox Terrier is not considered a hypoallergenic breed of dog. There is no such thing as a true 100% hypoallergenic dog, all dogs produce some allergens. However, most dog allergies in humans are caused by dander, which is the dog equivalent of dandruff. Dogs shed their coat’s top layer roughly every 21 days. When this happens, the dander is loose and circulates the air. That being said, a dog breed with a low-shedding coat produces much less dander than one that frequently sheds. This is the basis and logic of how we determine which breeds are “hypoallergenic dog breeds.” There are several breeds in this size range that you could look into, including the Miniature Schnauzer, West Highland White Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Border Terrier, Wire Fox Terrier, and the Norwich Terrier. All of these breeds do well with children when socialized properly.

On a second note, the best way to make sure that your husband is going to be okay with a dog is to spend time with that breed. If you choose a breed from the list above, make sure to ask the breeder if you can spend some time with that dog. Have your husband pet, sniff, be near, play, brush, ect. with that breed so you can be sure that he will stay comfortable.

Are Fox Terriers known to be very hyper?

The Fox Terrier has a lot of energy. They are quick little dogs with a sharp mind that love to play games like tug-of-war, chase and fetch. They can be considered hyper, but only by owners that don't understand the basic needs of this breed. An average of 2 hours of exercise is needed a day for this breed. An hour in the morning and an hour at night, preferably off-leash at a dog park. But remember, this breed has a high prey drive, so keep the dog on a leash when not in a fully secure, fenced in area.

My SFT Rex was a rescued pure inbred abandoned puppy in 2005 & very "hyper" (just like me then @ 64 yrs old). Because we both had the same "issue", I had more patience & understanding of his nature...we were a perfect match for each other! He was so smart, loved to please me /do his "tasks/job". Being a Senior, I taught him to get me the phone (in case of a medical emergency) & would hide treats & tell him wait & then go find them. He didn't like being left alone & if I had appts. he would howl like a wolf for me, but I was lucky my neighbors loved him! Being in the city, we would go for 2 hr hikes for his high energy level & he loved to play ball & Tig of war. He chase squirrels on leash with me tagging behind. I will never own any other breed of dog!! He was so much fun & so smart! And he was a shedder as well

What are the first year vet costs for a female toy Fox Terrier?

The vet costs all depend on the dog and your vet. Some vets cost more then other's and some dogs are more expensive then other's. Although, the average I would say, including spay would be between $500.00 - $700.00. But again, it all depends on the dog and the vet.
