Before buying a puppy it is important to understand the associated costs of owning a dog. The annual cost or "upkeep" is often overlooked when determining an English Golden Retrievers true ownership cost. When calculating your budget make sure you account for the price of food, vaccines, heartworm, deworming, flea control, vet bills, spay/neuter fees, grooming, dental care, food, training and supplies such as a collar, leash, crate, bed, bowls, bones, and toys. All of these items can add up quickly so make sure you estimate anywhere from $500 - $2,000 or more for the first year then about $500 - $1,000 or more every year thereafter to meet the annual financial obligations of your growing, loving dog.

The main difference between an English Golden Retriever and an American Golden Retriever is genetic make up and the AKC and UKC. All colorations from very light cream to dark red can be found both in the English and American Golden Retriever. However, the lighter colorations are more popular and common in the English lines. Health, pedigree and over-all temperament can vary from breeder to breeder. So in short, as long as your breeder does all the health checks and is a reputable, responsible and knowledgeable breeder; then it doesn't matter if you get an English or American Golden.
This isn't completely accurate. One major difference is that English Goldens are less likely to develop some of the cancers and benign tumors that are so common in American Goldens.
What the term English Golden Retriever — or English Créme Golden Retriever — is actually referring to is a Golden Retriever that was bred in Europe, or has ancestry from European stock. The American Kennel Club (AKC) and The Kennel Club (KC - England/Europe) have slightly different breed standards for Golden Retrievers. So, the European-bred Goldens tend to look a little different from the American-bred Goldens. Although they are the same breed of dog, the European-bred Goldens tend to be bigger-boned, stockier built dogs with blockier heads and more sound health than the American-bred Goldens. Also, the KC breed standard allows for the very light, almost white shading of gold that the AKC does not. The English Goldens seem to be even more good tempered, sweet natured and biddable than the American Goldens. And, the English Goldens tend to have a more laid-back, mellow temperament - even at a young age - than the American Goldens, who can tend to be hyperactive well past puppyhood.
Yes exactly as the third comment. We have had both American and English Goldens for many many years. There is a vast difference in the personality of them for sure. The English Golden Retrievers are by FAR more calm, and VERY mild natured! They are MUCH more of a lower energy breed than the American Golden Retrievers. The English Golden Retrievers have an overall cancer risk that is MUCH lower than the American Golden. On the flip side, if you are looking for a bird hunting dog, we find that the American Golden is more suited for this, as their energy level is higher. The English Goldens make wonderful therapy dogs as they are VERY Peaceable with all other dogs/animals, and are VERY mild natured, CALM, and gentle.
Yes indeed our English Crème Golden Retriever is such a sweetheart. She will lay down to a barking alpha dominant dog as if to say "play with me, I'm not a threat" as she is always eager to play....never meets a stranger. She loves everyone and unfortunately never senses danger. A wonderful breed. Just be prepared for excess shedding but quite a beauty.
