Overview
Developed in Australia in 1870, the Australian Kelpie is an outstanding breed noted for their strong natural guarding and herding instincts. They are capable of working poultry, goats, sheep, cattle, and reindeer. They are the most popular breed in their native Australia and are revered in several other countries as well.
Character
This breed possesses keen senses and an alert expression. Australian Kelpie's are extremely agile and have an inexhaustible supply of energy. The Australian Kelpie is considered to be the best performing medium-sized sheepdog. Despite their size and their compact and muscular body, they are versatile, capable, and without limitation.
Temperament
The Australian Kelpie is a loyal companion. They are mild mannered at home and intense when at work. This breed is rarely affectionate and typically bonds to one person. They are highly devoted and friendly to their master. Australian Kelpie's do well with children they have been raised with and will herd other dogs, pets, and animals. The Australian Kelpie is not aggressive but will guard and protect his family and territory regardless of any risk to themselves.
Care
The Australian Kelpie breed requires occasional brushing. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary to prevent damage to the coat and skin. Dental hygiene is essential. This breed is prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy.
Coat
The Australian Kelpie is a double coat breed. The outer coat is straight, hard, and weather-resistant. The under coat is dense and short. This breed is an average shedder.
Training
The Australian Kelpie is independent and highly intelligent. Early socialization is recommended. They do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training should be done with firmness, fairness, and consistency.
Activity
Australian Kelpie's are not suited to apartment or city dwelling. They require a rural setting in an active environment. The Australian Kelpie thrives on an inordinate amount of exercise and a job to do. If they become bored they become destructive.

Learn what to expect when researching the price of Australian Kelpie puppies.

How much do Australian Kelpie puppies cost?

The cost to buy an Australian Kelpie varies greatly and depends on many factors such as the breeders' location, reputation, litter size, lineage of the puppy, breed popularity (supply and demand), training, socialization efforts, breed lines and much more. Review how much Australian Kelpie puppies for sale sell for below.

The current median price for all Australian Kelpies sold is $500.00. This is the price you can expect to budget for an Australian Kelpie with papers but without breeding rights nor show quality. Looking for a dog with a superior lineage? Are you trying to determine how much a puppy with breeding rights and papers would cost? You should expect to pay a premium for a puppy with breeding rights or even for a puppy advertised as show quality with papers. You should budget anywhere from $800 upwards to $3,400 or even more for an Australian Kelpie with top breed lines and a superior pedigree. The average cost for all Australian Kelpies sold is $400.

Annual cost of owning an Australian Kelpie puppy

Before buying a puppy it is important to understand the associated costs of owning a dog. The annual cost or "upkeep" is often overlooked when determining an Australian Kelpies true ownership cost. When calculating your budget make sure you account for the price of food, vaccines, heartworm, deworming, flea control, vet bills, spay/neuter fees, grooming, dental care, food, training and supplies such as a collar, leash, crate, bed, bowls, bones, and toys. All of these items can add up quickly so make sure you estimate anywhere from $500 - $2,000 or more for the first year then about $500 - $1,000 or more every year thereafter to meet the annual financial obligations of your growing, loving dog.

Anonymous asked:
Are Kelpies good dogs for a family with a twelve year old, fourteen years old and twenty year old? We do bike rides a lot, we do cross country running training, our family is reasonably active, and we feel like a Kelpie would be a good breed for us. We don't want to get a large breed, and a Kelpie seems like the absolute perfect breed for a lot of our activities.

The Australian Kelpie is a high energy, loyal, eager to please, loving and devoted breed of dog. They need a job. Whether that is working livestock, or going out on the running training with you, they need a job. If you are serious about owning a Kelpie, make sure you are serious about being able to exercise him / her every day. It sounds like your family would do wonderful with a Kelpie as long as you are as devoted to the dog as he / she will be to you and your family. When the dog is an adult, I would suggest a weighted back pack to help tire the dog out faster as this breed has incredible endurance.

Anonymous asked:
Is there a toy size Kelpie mix??

Anonymous

In short, no. The Australian Kelpie ranges from 30 - 45 lbs. The smallest you will get that is still in the set standard is 30 lbs. However, if you obviously mix this breed with a smaller breed of dog, then you will most likely get smaller adult dogs out of that litter. But mixing dogs just for the sake of mixing is not something that you should want to do. There are hundreds and hundreds of breeds of dogs in the world that were all created for a purpose and have different physical traits and abilities, dispositions, temperaments and personalities. Choose a breed that fits what you want and love them for what and who they are. There is nothing wrong with mixed breed dogs, but mixing for the sake of mixing is the way we have a pet population problem in the world / puppy mills that make cute sounding mixes to sell to the public for money in exchange for suffering the life of being owned by a careless and uncaring 'breeder'.

I am looking for a dog that will be fine around my horses and will accompany me on backwoods rides, not running away or chasing deer off and getting lost. Are Australian Kelpie's loyal to stay with their owner?

Anonymous

The Australian Kelpie is a loyal and intense working dog. Their prey drive is very high and so they need a solid training foundation from day one. Working on a solid recall cue and leave it cue is the best with this breed. But once trained and knowing the routine, the Kelpie would do amazing for what you are looking for in a companion.

Anonymous asked:
Will the Australian Kelpie risk its life for its family?

Anonymous

The Australian Kelpie is a loyal companion. They are mild mannered at home and intense when at work. This breed is rarely affectionate and typically bonds to one person but highly devoted and friendly to their master. The Australian Kelpie is not aggressive but will guard and protect his family and territory regardless of any risk to themselves. A well socialized dog will know when protection is needed and when it is not needed.

My daughters have lived in Australia and worked with Kelpies there and one even brought her Kelpie back to the States with her. We use Kelpies on our farm. They are super affectionate dogs, happy and love their people. If you socialize them they love the whole family and are generally fairly social with others but do typically pick one person as their favorite. Would they protect the family? Yes.

Anonymous asked:
What age can you start training a Kelpie puppy to move cattle and sheep?

Anonymous

The moment you get your pup, he/she should be integrated with sheep and cattle. Once your pup has finished basic obedience, he/she should be ready to be taught to move cattle. I would suggest at about 6 months your dog is ready to start.
