ready for a new dog to love

Our almost 13 yo labrador retriever died almost 2 months ago and we are starting to think about getting a new dog in a few months. Although we totally loved our lab, toward the end when she was so sick it was vert hard for my husband or I to pick her up so we are now looking for a smaller dog. Because of health issues and a small yard, we can't have an overly active dog and we need a breed that would do well with our cat and be good with young children when our grandkids come to visit. I have been thinking of a labradoodle rescue dog but does anyone have any thoughts on that or any other ideas. Thanks
