my husband is so wanting to have our american pit terrier's ears clipped!!! AND I DON'T WANT TO!!!!!! He is an amazing dog 7 weeks old i know that i still have some time to think this over cause they won't actually do the clipping until he is 10 weeeks old.... So why does it matter? Never being much of a dog kinda person i'm not sure if this is even necessary

As far as I know, it's done for aesthetics.  The AKC requires it of certain breeds if they are to be shown, so some people do it to get the "popular" or "standard" look for the dog.

My opinion is that if it's not medically necessary, don't do it.  Any surgical procedure will create stress, pain and potential for infection for your dog.  To me, a dog's health far outweighs the look.

It also sounds like a lot of work.  This link (click here) details how much commitment is required of the owner post-op to make sure the look stays.  Maybe showing your husband that link will change his mind ;)
