I'm so glad to have found this web site. I have just recently adopted two puggle Puppies. one male and one female. Like many of you, after adopting the Puppies I read all the horror stories on the internet about getting two Puppies at one time. I want to make sure that I raise the Puppies correctly and have been trying hard to spend one on one time with each puppy. I plan to enroll them in puppy training classes soon. I have been crating them together and they seem to be doing great. I just wanted to talk to others who are in the same boat..and hear some GOOD stories for once! Please help! |

Its not that its a bad thing, it just takes more devotion than just about anyone has, you have twice the poo, pee, chewed up things, vet bills and training, then the dogs prefer eachother over you as a way of thanking you In the past 2 years we have had 1 dane pup, 1 mix breed, an older German Shepherd pup, 2 rat terriers and a few that came in to be adopted out. We always manage but then again i have years of Dog experience. I cant say ive had a good or bad experience, but if you need any help your in the right place, thers a memeber that had adopted two pups at the same time, maybe she can share her wisdome. Google NILF Dog training and that will at least establish good manors and pack respect. |

Wow! I am getting flash backs.
Welcome to the board!

I practically posted the same thing when I joined.
First off, most people cannot handle two Puppies. Lots of people here will tell you that this was not a "smart" idea. I looooove having two dogs. They are sisters. I also crated them together, and still to this day, they sleep together in their bed. (if they are not on ours!) You will learn a ton from this site so take it as it comes good with the bad.
First questions...
Do you have the time? I was home all day with my Puppies to ensure that they had everything they needed. Time, to train, to love, time time time!
Do you have money!? Yikes to spay or fix the dogs is pricey! Shots, deworming, tooons of vet stuff! It is times two!!! Two times, the food to buy, the med bill, the everything.
There are so many things to concider in raising your two pups. Because you have a male and a female, it might be different. I know with the girls it was pretty easy. I will watch this thread and post more.
Have Fun!

My husband and I got a brother and sister basset/Beagle mix. We got them about 4 years ago. They always did great together.
I would say that they probably tore up less stuff than just one would have, maybe the same amount. It was not more. As newlyweds, money was a huge issue so we figured out the cheap way out a lot. Old socks make great toys. We just tie a knot in a sock and it is great fun. If they tear it up, great, you can just throw it away. There will always be another old sock. They loved being with eachother all of the time. When one decided to escape the yard they both did though.
We got them fixed together. We used a traveling spay/neuter group. Our local humane society used them too. They gave us a 2 for 1 deal. For $35 we got rabies shots for both and both got fixed. Check with your local shelters to see if they have recommendations. Like I said, we are cheep.
When they were about a year old we moved to Alabama. About a month or two later Hurricane Ivan came through. During clean-up our female got out and hit by a car. The male hasn't escaped a fence since. As soon as he came back inside he was going crazy sniffing. He sniffed everywhere she liked to be and he really checked out their crate.
Within a couple months we got a new Beagle puppy to be his new canine companion. No matter how much attention we gave him it seemed like he was still a little sad. He and the "puppy" we got are best friends. They are 4 1/2 and 3 now.
I love having a least 2 dogs. I wouldn't have it any other way. Getting and raising littermates was a great decision if you ask me.
have fun |

2puggles, you mentioned starting them in classes soon - make sure they have completed ALL their vaccines before taking them anywhere - especially anywhere around other dogs. |

Oh yeah, the thing about them not being attached to you and only each other is maybe a possibility. But, I think it is pretty much crazy. My dogs are so attached to us it is sickning!
For example, One day we were at a Dog friendly beach, and we were walking the dogs when my husband decided to go back to "camp' to drop off his shoes.(While I stopped to wait with the pups.) When they realized that they were stuck with me and "daddy" was walking away they absolutly freaked out! I mean seriously, they were SCREAMING! People were looking at me like I was beating them or something. It was so funny I couldnt stop laughing. It was so loud, and so unbelieveable. My in laws were with us I said they have never heard a Dog scream before. I am still laughing about it right now. Ohhhhh they loooove their Daddy!!!!
Anyway, I have yet to hear anyone who owned siblings dogs and them saying that they are not attached to the owner... |

Welcome to the board. :) There can and are real negitives to getting two Puppies at the same time and for most people I would not recommend it. However you have your Puppies now so that point is mute. I agree with Sue, make sure they've had all their shots before taking them to puppy classes.
Many people struggle to housetrain their Pug/Beagle mixed Puppies. Your best bet is to set a schedule and stick to it. Since both breeds can be treat hounds, use that to your advantage while training. :) "Will work for food" will have a whole new meaning. lol
When looking for puppy classes really check out the person running the class. There are many ways to train a dog, not all of them are good. Sit in on a class or two before you sign up.
Toys,Toys, and more Toys. Will go a long way in helping save your shoes. lol Rotate toys. No more than four toys on the floor at a time and teach the pups they "MUST" share. Don't encourage them to play tug or rob the other. This will go a long way at warding off problems in the future.
Look forward to hearing more about your pups. Again Welcome to the board. :) |

I have just recently adopted a lab/border collie cross puppy after tragically losing my English mastiff. The new puppy is incredibly energetic and we all play with him alot. I'm worried once the kids return to school after Christmas break that he may not get all the companionship and exercise that he's used to. Five of his siblings are still available for adoption and I have been thinking about adopting another one. Am I crazy? Or will they keep each other company and provide play time they wouldn't get otherwise? This puppy is housetrained and fitting in wonderfully, will I mess this up? Thanks for your input. |

NO, do not get a second Dog for this reason. The second Dog will need just as much attention as the first Dog so instead of having one bored and loney Dog you will have two. dogs don't need other dogs to keep them company or as playmates... thats our job.
If your worried than hire someone to come in and get him out midway through the day or get a friend or neighbor to do it.
Buy kongs and fill them with treats to give him something to do. Take him for a good walk in the morning and a longer one at night everyday. Teach him to play fetch. Very little work for you and great for him. :)

Five weeks old? Oh my. They should not have left the breeder for at least another three weeks. There was much for them to learn from their mom and litter mates yet. Not to mention the risk of them getting sick. Please forgive me but you've only had them three days, I would be shocked if you didn't still think they were grand and having two is a great idea.
There are very few people who can take two Puppies and make it work long term, stay at home or not. This may work out fine for you but if it does you will be the exception not the rule. Please by all means do not take my word for it, call your local shelter or rescues and ask them. I have little doubt they will tell you that most people who buy two Puppies at the same time end up dumping both pups by the time they are six months old.
I wish you the best and encourage you to sign your pups up for puppy classes when they've had all their shots. Hope you stick around and prove me wrong. Your pups can only be better off for it. |

I cant even imagine dumping my Puppies. Even after the first night. But, thats just me. Doesnt sound like those shelters should let someone adopt 2 if they believe that most likly they will be dumped. That just doesnt make sense. I know when we adopted ours the screening was pretty serious. But I do agree that no one should get two just to have playmates or "to keep each other company" You are right about how they both need individual attention. But...I have a good case to prove you wrong. My pups are now a year and a half. And I love them like no other! |

reputable breeders do not sell Puppies until 10 - 12 weeks, many even later.
most states require them to be at least 8 weeks old, for very good reason.
you can expect mouthing & biting problems because of it.
you may want to google NILIF so you can get a jump on being the "alpha" of the pack |

The shelter didn't let them adopt two, breeders, pet stores and puppy millers did.

I am really disappointed at all the negative comments! The dad to these pups was owned by our best friends! The mom was their life long neighbors dog! They were not produced on purpose as the vet said because of a medical condition the male could not father pups.So heres to all you haters Our pups were eating on their on when we got them at 5 weeks. The male weighed 8lbs4ozs & and the lil girl weighed 7lbs4ozs when we took them to the vet for worming! Our vets checked them and will again at 7 weeks. They do not chew on anything but their toys but when they happen to grab a shoe we put it away and replace with toys. They are already going to the door and crying to be let out to do their business.I said they were smart in fact I am 53 and NEVER seen young pups like this. The mom & dad are both registered but we were given BOTH the pups for FREE!Sorry I didn't explain in detail I was just looking for a friendly site to discuss pets etc. |

negitive comments and haters... excuse me but pointing out the down side of owning two Puppies does not a hater make me, nor is pointing out that you haven't had your dogs long enough to be recommending it to someone elce. I'm sorry if you were offened I truely am.
This is a friendly place. However from time to time we don't all see things the same way, that doesn't make this a bad place or the people who disagree with us bad either. Often we learn the most from people who don't agree with us. Even if they don't change our minds they give us something to think about. I don't know about anyone elce but I've never "learned" anything from someone who totally agreed with me on everything.
I'm not really sure how the fact that you received these Puppies from an accidental breeding for free changes anything, except that I'm glad that they were lucky to find a home. As I said before, I wish you the very best luck with these pups and hope you stick around. |

I am not sure if I am happy I found this site or scared what might be learned. I always had two dogs but they were from rescue shelters and older. This time I decided to purchase a Havanese male puppy. Having thought about how much I loved having two males at the same time in the past I purchased two males from the same liter. I have paid my deposit and will be picking them up Easter weekend. I have not raised a puppy in over 25 years and I am constantly reminded from friends and family how much work I am going to have. My husband and I will be attending puppy kindergarten classes together with the boys. The breeder has stated that one of the Puppies is already demonstrating Alpha behavior and the other one is being submissive.
We have never crated any of our dogs in the past however, I remember the teething months and know anything is vulnerable to be chewed that is not nailed to the ceiling! So I am crating these two for their safety and my sanity. 1. Does anyone have a Havanese and if you do what are they like? Personally I have never seen a Havanese or known anyone who has owned one. I know. I am either super brave or super dumb. By-the-way the Puppies are 600 miles from me. I see their photos and clips every week since their births. The information I read on the Havanese states they are super intelligent, good with kids, weigh less than 13 lbs and are lap dogs. Question 2. Do I crate them together or separate them? |
