There are enough breeds which may fit this nitch. However, 99% of it will boil down to how well you supervise the two, never leave them alone, and train both the Dog and your child how to interact with and respect each other.
One little Dog that is good with children, may not be good for other aspects of your life.
Could you tell us more about the type of Dog your looking for (what you'd want in your dog, and if your life style is compatible with that type of dog.)
I know as parents we can be very busy, and don't always see just how busy we are, until we pile more responsibilities on top of ourselves.
Cheers! |

I'm not a fan of getting a small Dog when you have a small baby. But having said that I like Pugs for families with children. Pugs are a big Dog in a smaller package. The tolerate younger children much better than most toys and they don't break as easy. This however does not mean you will not need to stay on top of both Dog and baby to be sure both remain safe.

I know you said a small dog, but these are not always great choices if you have small children. small dogs break easily and aren't always best with kids. for a medium sized Dog I'd go for a springer spaniel. Papillons are great family dogs but tend to break easily...
Pugs are a good choice if you have little kids.

just something for you to think about. most reputable breeders, rescues & many shelters do not adopt ANY Dog to homes with kids under 8 or 10.
there are a gazillion reasons but they are all for the protection of the Dog & the safety of the child. |

My two cents...
With any breed, if you do go with a puppy, make sure it is from a reputable breeder. You want to be able to meet the parents as they play a large factor in the outcome of the dog's behavior, though training is an even greater factor. I have two pugs. While they are wonderful family dogs and a breed that has been around small children for many years in my family, they didn't train themselves (neither did the young children teach themselves to respect the dogs). |

We got our first Dog when my daughter was two years old. I too was in the position of looking for a Dog that was good with children. Two dogs that you may want to consider are Bichon Frise's or Cocker Spaniels. Both are high maintences breeds however each has their own unique quality.
I have two cockers and they work well with nearly all children and all people. |

just for any lurkers - cockers are not recommended for homes with children - usually under 10 or 12 mainly because of the common ear problem.
just take a look at any of the rescue sites |

I totally agree, most small dogs are better with older considerate children. Typically bigger breeds have more tollerance for kids tugging and shoving. But you do need to be sure that no Dog is left with a young child unsupervised. |
