Indian man marries dog
By Peter Foster
Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 13/11/2007

An Indian man who believed he had been cursed for stoning to death two dogs has atoned for his sin by marrying another Dog in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony.

P. Selvakumar, a 33-year-old farm labourer from the southern state of Tamil Nadu, married the four-year-old stray bitch after it was bathed and processed to his village temple dressed in an orange sari and garlanded with flowers.

The marriage took place on the advice of the man's astrologer who said it was the only way to atone for his actions of more than 20 years ago.

He was reported to have suffered a series of physical ailments after stoning the dogs to death and hanging their bodies from a tree.

After that my legs and hands got paralysed and I lost hearing in one ear, said Mr Selvakumar after the ceremony with his new "bride", whose name is Selvi.

A reception attended by some 200 guests was held for the newlyweds in the groom's house during which Selvi grew restless and ran away.

advertisementHowever she was subsequently recaptured and returned to her husband who gave her milk and a bun to eat.

It is understood that the groom is still free to find a human wife should he be inclined.

Mr Selvakumar is not the first man to have hit the headlines for having romantic relations with animals.

Last year a Sudanese man was forced to marry a goat after village elders discovered him having sex with her. The goat died shortly afterwards.

this may seem 'stupid' to a lot of people but this is someone's culture. i wouldn't want to call someone's beliefs stupid.
anyways, i wish more people would be able to have a guilty conscious and realize that animal abuse is wrong. marrying an animal is pretty extreme but at least he's taking responsibilty..i can't say the same for other people who abuse their animals.

My heart goes out to this poor dog. IF I read this right...This man has already killed two dogs (20 years ago or not death by stoneing a horrable way to kill and be killed) and now they've just given him another in high style. Read the story and hear the story between the lines.... He said he believed he was cursed with bad health, from the first two killings and was told to marry a Dog to break the curse. In this case they call it atoning. Did he marry her out of true remorse and repentence or only in an attempt to free himself of the binds of a curse? So what happens to the Dog (if or) when she fails to bring him good health and break the curse?

I have been wondering does your screen name have anything to do with the movie "An Officer and a Gentlemen"?
Ahh well I still think of you as 1010.

Oh it was a classic "love story" movie back in the 80's. Two of the characters were named Mayo and Seger. I call you 1010 (it's in your screen name) as it seems easier to me.

I understand what your saying but you have to realize other countries don't have the same laws as us. animals are not protected by law therefore animal cruelty is a common thing. yes, i feel bad for the dogs and other pets that live in those countries but what would happen to the Dog if it was found by another man who would physically abuse or kill it? Marrying a Dog sounds like a silly thing but he's taking responsibility whether it works or not..well i'm not sure what he would do. we can not predict anything. he could change his ways just by caring and living with the Dog or he could go back to his old ways. if we didn't have animal cruelty laws you think michael vick would feel guilty? at least this man has a tiny bit of remorse..he believes it to be a curse but we all know there is no curse..it is his guilty conscious talking.

Shep:

While I won't remark on their culture as "crazy". My concern was simply the well being of this dog.

I'm sure our culture seems pretty off the wall to other countries. In fact I know it does.
