Im almost 19 years old. Im a full time college student and I work part time as a waitress. I know Im a very responsible person and my parents know I am as well.
We already have 5 dogs, two which are mine. (Cody & Boogar age 5) My mother has 3 poms which live inside the house and are her 'little angels'. My dogs are between 50 and 120 lbs so they require a bit more attention. I told my mother I wanted to adopt puppy as a christmas present for myself and she about flipped claiming to not want 'another animal' in her house after having new carpet put in all the bedrooms. Yes, she does have a point about Puppies and their potty habits. I know with proper attention and cleaning that shouldnt be a problem, (Proper training, cleaning to prevent staints, ect). She also claimed to not be able to afford the payments of another dog. (Food, supplies, vet bills). Being that I do work I dont see how that is a problem when I myself could easily afford the costs. Adopting a new baby into MY doggie family is something Ive put alot of time and thought into and I know I could take care of him/her. Im just extremly stuck with my mother and her stuborness. I REALLY NEED HELP! If anyone knows anything I could possibly do or say I would certainly appreciate it. Thankyou |

There's nothing you can say. The more kids push their parents, the more the parents dig in their heels and won't give in. At this point in your life, 5 dogs should be plenty. You'll be moving out of your mom's house soon enough and then you can adopt as many as you want. It won't be long until you find a new place or Mr Perfect, so be patient. |

OH honey, I'm 21 and I don't go to school and I only work weekends. It takes all of my time to train my puppy, and when it comes down to it I acutally think it would have been better to get an older, already trained, dog.
I can see your mother's concern as do you. And from what you said it sounds like you might not actually have all the time to take care of a new puppy and I'm not sure that'd be fair to the little guy. The others might teach him/her but that's something I can't vouch for honestly.
And, yes there is the age thing. Will you be moving out anytime within the next 18 years? If so do the apartments in your state allow more than 2 dogs in most cases? out here it's only 2 small dogs max and even then they don't want you to have them.
These are all just little things to help with your decision. I'm suggesting that if you do get a new friend that maybe you should get one that's already trained, and that you make sure you have enough time to dedicate to the little one. |

being a full time student and having a part time job will make it hard for you to care for a puppy.
Puppies are like babies and require a lot of attention.
if you already have 5 dogs then why do you need another dog? most state wont allow having that many dogs in a household. I would concentrate on your schoolwork and caring for your own dogs before getting another one. if you want to help..why not volunteer at the shelter?

the two big dogs - do you take them for 30 minute walks twice a day? how much fun time do you spend with them
a puppy needs to be taken out every half hour for at least a couple weeks then every hour or so. Who will do that since you are never home?
a puppy needs fed at least 4 times a day & a snack at nite - who will do all that?
it is your mothers house & she has every reason to tell you no.
I don't think you are showing any maturity or responsibility with this at all. |

I have to agree whole heartedly with Sue. If you have five dogs, try investing more time and energy into them. A puppy is a lot of work and requires a lot of training and attention. If you are going to school and working, when would you have time to do all of this. Wait until your life settles down and maybe until you have a place of your own to call home and enough stability to care for any unforseen circumstances. I think five dogs in your home should keep you more than busy if they are getting the proper attention and exercise. I also believe that there are laws against more than four dogs in many states so you might want to check on that.
Of course if all of your dogs are licensed, then I guess it is legal to have more than four in your area! |

Just to be fair and balanced.....I know its common for places to have Dog limits but not all places do and some that do allow up to five dogs with no limit on cats. I lived in a larger city that allowed you to have up to five dogs and you did not have to license your pets. Your only requirement was a rabies tag.
I also grew up on a farm and we could have had as many dogs and cats as we wanted. They had to have rabies tags.
However OP.. I agree with the others, this is not a good time to "gift" yourself with another mouth to feed and body to care for. My guess is your having puppy blues, been there done that. Instead of getting another dog, try reconnecting with the two you have now. Spend the money you would have spent on a new puppy and take them to training classes, or agility classes. See all that they can be. Soon the puppy blues will pass and you will see you already have two wonderful dogs that love you. |

Did I not mention three of those dogs ARENT mine but my moms?? My two live outside all day, (depending on the weather & in a very LARGE backyard), and sleep in the basement at night. My mom refuses to let my 2 dogs in the house. I live in Alabama. There are no laws againt how many animals a household owns. |

Thanks. I feel I am kind of having the 'puppy blues'. My two dogs are my heart and are the most wonderful companions I could ever ask for. I plan to spoil them like crazy come this holiday season ;)
Thanks for the help! |

Im in Ga but know a few kennels in alabama if you would like to maybe go and get a puppy fix and not having to worry about feeling sorry for it being on dealth row. All these pups are already sold so puppy fix without being able to take one home. i cant give names out but please feel free to email me kabukienot@yahoo.com
also you may be able to find some one needing a puppy walker and you can put a few bucks in your pocket while getting a fix |

Personally, I don't feel that if your other two need to stay outside all the time and stay in the basement, how much attention are they getting? Especially if you are at school and work! I would agree with Dane...try helping out with Puppies out there that need help. Wait until you have a more stable setup for a pup. |

I don't know if they have these where you live but a pet store near me (that does not sell dogs or cats) has a place you can bring your Dog in and for 10 bucks you can give them a bath and blow dry them. It kinds fun and saves the mess at home. dogs love to be pampered and when their clean everyone gives them extra attention. They really like that. :) You could try it. |

Im actually dreading a puppy but ive been waiting almost a year to get one from this line and adults from this line are impossible to find to show (one im handling this weekend is from that line). Yes they are cute, but they are messy destuctive pains in the pin feathers. My shoes just have became some what safe, i had planned to get new furniture but im going to wait, that way when the pup eats the arm off while im in the shower, well we needed a newer one anyway. Then theres the hours of training the endless piles of poo and pee, accidents in the crates at 2 am and have to give pup and crate a bath as they are so happy to see you they splatter crap every were. I have to agree to do this pup holisticly so thats even worse. Since it will be for show and breeders havnt gotten the natural ears were they are like they are suposed to be when uncropped ill probally have to go through that. This will be the last puppy ever to come in my house period. I hate Puppies. love them dogs though |

Again.. I'm still left asking how much time are you able to spend with your two dogs?
And if your mother doesn't want to take care of a puppy, for whatever reason, you shouldnt put that strain on her. If growing up has taught me anything it's to be considerate of others.. remember that she is the one who's house you live in. |
