Your bond with your Dog will be tight. The two of you against the world. OF course its easy to baby a puppy so you need to be careful to remember you have a Dog and your Dog needs to learn to see the world from his own four feet. Don't over carry him. Hold him when your sitting or laying down, but make him walk most of the time. A Dog that is over carried often become aggressive biters.
I'm a huge believer in doggy blankets. You can save money buy cutting up human blankets into smaller blankets. Softer is better. My Chihuahua loves soft furry blankets. If you teach your pup to enjoy their blankets, when you travel its easier to make them feel at home with their blanket along. |

I know I am excited to get him and hold him all the time but I know I cant for the best interest of him. It will just cause more problems later on down the road and I would like to avoid that at all costs. I am somewhat worried though. I get him on the 14th and then I am leaving to go visit family in NC (i live in MD) on the 21st I think. We are driving and I am most deff taking him but do you think that this is going to be bad for him. I know its not right to be sending him around like this and I dont want to confuse him but I dont want to leave him home and I cant cancel my trip. I could leave him with one of my friends but I know that since it is his first week he should be with me and letting my friends keep him and then giving him back to me would just be more confusion. Let me know if you have any advice!! |

Ok, this is a tough one. I would not leave him with friends and frankly he's to young for a normal pet sitter. So taking him with is the only option. You are going to need to make a plan for potty stops. YOUR pups feet should never hit the ground while traveling. So heres how I handled it when I had to bring my Chihuahua home, I got two felt back table cloths and sewed them together felt in the middle. I stopped in places that were not High traffic Dog potty spots along the way. I had my pup on a lead and placed the homemade pad on the ground and then covered it with potty pads. She went everytime and with no problems.
I also had a doggy car seat for her. She slept most of the time.
Also only give your pup bottled water from the time you get him until you get home from your trip. Water is different everywhere and can cause loose stools.
Of course not traveling with such a small Dog is never a great idea but if you have to you must be very careful.
Oh and don't let him go outside at your moms either. So they had better be prepaired to allow him to use potty pads.

Thanks! That sounds like a great plan. Im glad you told me about not letting them touch the ground. Its because he is so young and can catch something right? Ill be very very very careful. But that is the way to go to make sure nothing happens. Im not going to let him out of my site at all! Thanks again! |

I have a morkie and he is the sweetest Dog ever. He does not bark a lot. if your neighbors walk by our fence sure he will bark but he is just protecting us. WHen you say stop he will. I got My Morkie (his name is tucker so i will just call him that) when he was 8 weeks. It did seem a little young because he was still drinking the milk but now he is a strong little guy. Tucker does have little Dog syndrom where he thinks he is a big Dog that can do anything but thats normal. He is now 16 weeks and 2 pounds. He sleeps a lot because i play with him in the morning before i leave and at night a lot. But he sleeps for a long time. Tucker only cost $350. I have been looking for a purebred pug yorkie or maltese and they are at least $600 or more for yorkies. So a morkie was the perfect solution. He also does not shed which is great becuase it keeps the house cleaner. When i am out and about with him everyone stops to say how cute he is. I have had at least five people that want the breeders name and phone number because they want one. So really what is the point of bashing these precious little dogs? And also about the potty training one thing that Tucker loves to do is pull the potty pad across the floor and run with it. SO other than that he is very good at the pads. He also is VERY smart. He already knows the words SIT, LAY DOWN, NO, POTTY, and more. He learns very quickly and very smart puppy!

Are you able to post the information for the breeder that you bought from? I am interested in buying a Morkie and I am looking for a reputable breeder.

no she cannot post that info .. and a MAJOR wake up call for you:
there ARE NO RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS OF "MORKIES" there is NO such person, its a MYTH - and the Dog is a MUTT.
they are mutts for bucks breeders , designer mutt breeders , and all they care about is teh $$ flowing in. NOT you not your pup not its parents or its lines or its heath or its temperment.
and they will tell you ANYTHING & EVERYTHING to get you to buy one.
have fun.
XRW
ps:
and you can get one at almost any shelter for usually 10 - 60 bucks.
and i pull designer mutts off deaths row all teh time - so dont even TRY to tell me you cannot find them there . you have to look as teh staff cannot LIST them as a "MORKIE" as teh PF & save a pet sites HAVE no listing for that designer mutts ( i think one of them does teh doodles)
but anyway you have to look for the crosses and find them.
i get them all the TIME. they are out there . DYING . |

I have a small poodle; almost 5 years old, and she uses a litter box. I bought a dog-litter box from the pet store, and put her potty pads in it. I recommned it as one way to discourage "playing" with the potty pads. |

| Quote miarob: No hun, it is NOT a ballpark figure it is a selling tool! Maltese run around 10 pounds and Yorkies around 7-10, where on earth did the "breeder" get 4??? My yorkie yapped his head off, even when I was... |
I'm not sure where you got your info from, but both purebred maltese and purebred yorkies should be under 7 pounds. These are the AKC standards. If the yorkie and maltese that were bred meet the breed standards for the respective breed, it is very possible her morkie will be 4-6 pounds full grown. If you have a 10 pound maltese or yorkie, maybe you are the one who should have questioned your breeder more! |

you must havereally had to search far to find this thread simply to start bickering with MIAR?
why didnt you simply start a new thread about your info on these breeds?
why drag out a dead thread from the closet?

IG she checked her stats ( i check anyway) so she wouldnt be "wrong" BUT she is not mentioning in BACK YARD BRED dogs VERY few are to standrad of AKC at all.
I had a maltese ( with papers) in my rescue and he was 14 lbs AFTER i took a good 6 pounds of fat off him)
most designer mutt breeders are NOT using quality, titled show stock to breed from.
that is the missing part of this puzzle .

I have an idea for the "fighters". Start a thread called "want to fight". The Mod's probably wouldn't do much (since the title says it all). Then the rest of us who like to discuss and learn can do so (fairly) peacefully! |

You must be a friend of Bowser, anyway, your right 7 pounds is the standard my mistake. I'm sure all the ethical breeders of mutts are sure to follow the AKC standards so as not to taint the gene pool. Thank you for the correction |

I've got to say that there are some very negative posters here. I've owned dogs my whole life and am in my 50's now. This beautiful combination of dogs are actually registerable with CKC. They are fast becoming a new breed of their own and I'm sure soon with AKC. I have owned a yorkie for 11 years and a Morkie for just a little less than a week now. The yorkie does not yap all day long, only to greet, to let me know someone is at the door and to let me know she needs something, like go out or eat. She doesn't bark 24/7 as one poster put. Any Dog might have the propensity to bark all day long if left alone. They get bored! My Morkie is very tiny, only 1.5 pounds at 9 weeks and I don't expect her to be more than about 5-6 pounds at the most. Her mother was 4 1/2 pounds, her father (maltese) was 5 1/2 pounds, so the person who was saying that a Morkie couldn't be that small was blatantly wrong. They carry the best traits of each breed, are very intelligent, easy to train and sweet as can be. I do agree about not putting the puppy on the ground. I have never taken my yorkie to a public place to walk and never will. I am puppy pad training my Morkie until she is old enough to not be nibbling on grass when I take her out. I have had contact with Morkie breeders for awhile now and some are in it for the money, some not, just the same as any breeder of any breed of dog. I think people should stop confusing negativity with good advice! |

Jenna~
Enjoy your morkie. I am the proud owner of a maltese (that I purchased while stationed in Korea) and a morkie that I purchased 4 months ago in Eagle River, Alaska. Both of my boys are the sweetest dogs. I am sure yours will be a sweetheart! Some of the posters are negative, some postive. Pay attention to them all, because they have experience. Anyone who tells you that looks dont matter to an owner is wrong. Not many people want to look at their pup and go "ugh!" You chose your puppy for a reason and you sound like you will be a good mom.
Enjoy, but remember to have the patience needed to potty train. Both my dogs are puppy pad trained and it did take some dedication and lots of positive reinforcement. The Napolean complex is going to take some doing to fix, but socialize them with big dogs when all shots are complete and he is given a clean bill of health.
Have fun with your baby!

Hi Jenna!...So i'm a little late on this whole forum of you talking about the puppy you adopted. And you probably already have her. I just wanted to let you know that I have a Morkie and he is the SWEETEST Dog in the world!. He is soo smart, which he gets from being a Yorkie. He is just AMAZING! I love him and just could not live without him and I truly hope that you did decide to get that Morkie cuz they are are just amazing little pups. My morkie is 4 months old now and is almost 6lbs and he will probably get up to 10 lbs. Believe me, the bigger the better! I used to not want him to grow when I first got him, but now i definitly do! When they are bigger, you'll be able to watch out for them more and won't keep running into him. But yea good luck on raising the baby and let me know how its all going! Take care! |

Don't listen to everyone else! I own a morkie myself and he is the sweetest thing in the world. There is nothing wrong with a mix breed and often they are much healthier than pedigree dogs. They do bark, but can be trained not to. They are very hard to house train, but have patience and u will be rewarded in the end. It is true u dont know how big the Dog will get but these dogs can range from 5-10 lbs. Just make sure to get its shots, plenty of exercise and attention. Be patient and u will love him and do plenty of research on how to train and raise a puppy. |
