2-3 months. You have a little time, but don't put off spaying her, it should be done as soon as possible.

I'm alittle confused.. your title is "how can I tell if my female is ready to breed" But your post says you don't wish to breed her?

I guess you were trying to ask how will you know when your Dog will come back in heat. Most dogs go into heat about every six months. Pregnancy for a Dog (all breeds) lasts about 2 months: 60-64 days and if the pups were born 10 to 12 weeks ago. She was bred either in Dec. or January so I would expect her to come back into heat July or August.

So NOW is the time to get her spayed. Call the vet today and make the appointment. You'll be glad you did.

She was already bred way to young and is now at a higher risk for uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer, since the uterus and ovaries are removed during the spay surgery.

Having her spayed can decrease her chances for breast cancer as well.

Thank You everyone. I am on the phone right now with my vet.. Like I said I just got her on friday...another question I have is why is she offering herself to my male?(no he aint fixed he is a stud dog) i keep them seperate when i aint home.. she is always trying to hump him and she puts her rear end in his face.. does this mean she is ready to breed?

byb = back yard breeder. A person who breeds for money. Not a responsible reputable breeder.

Why are you breeding your male? Has he been shown & earned championships proving he is worthy of breeding?

Have both dogs had all the genetic & health testing done prior to breeding? Tested for STD's?

Have you done years of research on his lines to understand what health or temperment problems may exist?

It is great that you are getting her done right away. You may be saving her life. Please do the same for him

So is she bred now, or has she already had pups, cuz in your first post you state that she already had pups, and now you state she was bred before you got her????

BTW a BYB is a BACK YARD BREEDER!

ok let me set this straight..
She already had her Puppies before i even got her.. i know that they are about 12 weeks old or maybe less.. I am in no way a back yard breeder.. yes my male has been tested for everything and so hasn't the female that I am breeding him to.. this will be his 1st litter and I aint in it for the money.. so before you can judge a person you must get the facts straight.. my dogs are my children I have 3 of them.(dogs that is) theya re all spoiled rotten and I plan on getting him fixed after he breeds. so basically the reason I am asking how to tell if she is ready to breed is because I aint sure when she had her first heat.. I wanna make sure i get her spayed before her 2nd one comes along

many of use here clean up after bybs and see all that goes on, and given the question you asked, that is something a inexperinced breeder would ask and the education should become before the breeding, thats why you got grilled. Maltese are becoming more popular in rescues as they are being carelessly over bred and causing major health problems thus no one wants them. Given that information, maybe you can understand.
It doesnt take more than a week to get an appointment so even if utoh happens you can still have her spayed, but i would suggest keeping them apart until you can get a handle on the situation.
www.borntodiepets.com if you can understand why we are the way we are.

ok what genetic test did you do - since you want us to HAVE all the facts before we judge you

please enlighten us what did you have tested ?

what titles does he hold?

what titles goes his "girl friend" in orlando hold?

what tests has she had you DO know about STDS? dogs get them too.

so - once you tell us what his genetic & heath test were - and what titles he & teh female hold ..

we can STOP calling you a BYB ..
becasue without the above -
that is exactly what you are.

reputable responsible breeders only breed to improve the breed or those particular lines.

If you have not shown your Dog then you have no way of knowing if he even comes close to the breed standard.

So enlighten us, what exactly are your reasons for breeding him?

You know there's a good chance he will be lifting his leg on all your furniure after he breeds.

I don't mean to be a brat about this, or start a fight; but havn't you ever heard of innocent until proven guilty. I think this is most of the problem here, is that everyone is accusing everyone before the true facts can come out. Why don't we act the appropriate questoins politely before being rude. I have been coming to this forum for so long now, and I am just recently seeing this nastiness. I totally understand being concerned for the pet population, and the deaths, and overrunedness (Hehe, I made a new word ) in the shelters, but by pissing everyone off in this way does no good. We are making these people offended, and hurting their feelings etc, and it is not doing any good. They are going to say to themselves "What the hell do they know? They aren't vets, I don't know them, they don't know me... I WILL BREED MY Dog ANYWAY!" That is exactly what they have all said to themselves, and what they have all done.
If we ask questions and politely try to educate I think we will make more of a difference. You can't make something right by acting the way some of us are.

a rb knows all aspects of breeding and this is not a case that is that complicated, its a matter of knowing bitches cycles and how to do math.

i could understand her question if she wasnt admitly breeding dogs even if not that one, and if she was breeding without full knowlege she should have a mentor. basic bitch husbandry includes knowlege of cycles.

Ok,

How did you aquire this dog? How is it that you know so little about her that you don't know if her pups were 11 or 12 weeks old? Why did the first owner give her up?

Why did the owner breed her, and then dispose of her. She couldn't have worthy of breeding if she was gotten rid of that quickly. Cute little Puppies are now in the home and no room for the mom? Get her fixed ASAP.
