I have a question for all. I just spoke to a friend of mine who has a lab that has been very sick. She wasnt eating, playing or getting excited about anything. She is an 8 month old lab! So I went over and played with her etc and to me it looked like maybe she had eaten something and maybe it was stuck b/c she would only drink and then throw it up. Well she took her to the vet and they did xrays. It turns out the Dog has a broken neck. The vet says it happens alot with the bigger dogs from them pulling on the leash or playing tug of war etc.
Well this happend over the weekend and she has gotten worse and worse after medication. The vet said it should correct itself so she is now taking her to the ER vets b/c all of her vets are out of town at some vet conference.
So my question is has anyone had this happen or heard about it happening. She is really scared the puppy wont survive or her neck will never be the same. Any advise please.

I would take the pup in for a second opionion right away. The fact that she isn't eating and gets sick when she drinks water bothers me a lot. Poor thing!

wow i have never ever heard of such a thing.. and i feel like the vet should put more effort into it. a broken neck to a human could mean death so what makes it different for a pooch. i hope everything works out ok for your friend. keep me posted.

She is getting the secong opionion now. We thought that same thing Kristin but the vet said it isnt a serious as a human breaking its neck. But she called the vet asst today and every question my friend asked was returned with a yes answer so we dont think she know what she is talking about.

I have never heard of such a thing. I would definitly get a second opinion on this. They say the broken neck will correct itself? Ok, fine, but the Dog needs to be drinking and eating something.

I would think the smaller breeds would be more suseptible to a broken neck than a large breed.

Wow a vet told her that a broken neck wasnt that serious. Take the pup to another vet fast and never darken the door of the first vets again. I would spread the word on such a vet. An animals broken neck has just as much possibility to cause problems as the human neck. This vet is a real dummy!!!!!

Just thought I would post a follow up on what is happening with Amber (my friends Lab). She is know home after spending the night at the ER.
It turns out that she did have a broken neck or broken bone in her neck that was perfectly broken (if there is a such thing)so that was NOT the issue.
She also had an abcess in her neck bigger than a softball and the original vet just thought that was swelling from break. They ended up doing surgery and placing 2 tubes in her neck that drains the stuff out of the abcess and is on heavy pain meds and doing better.
They almost lost her because it wasnt caught.
But I just wanted to let you know.
Also, Hoss and others there were a couple of vets that said the broken neck isnt as severe in dogs and it does heal itself and many peoples dogs do this and they arent even aware. If Amber didnt have the abcess than they probably wouldnt have known about the break FYI.

Hello; I just had to put my 6 year old Dog to sleep after finding out he had broke his neck. I dont know who but one day he was fine and the next he wasnt. My husband woke up on a saturday morning around 3am and found the Dog in the bathroom and couldnt move. I thought he had eaten something so I took him to the vet and they did xrays and found a torn musscle in his left leg, so took him home with his meds. Sunday morning he was okay walking a little slow but was able to go to the bathroom by himself. Several hours after he had taken his meds, he was unable to use his front legs, no control he tried to get up on his own but couldnt. I would stand him up and he would fall down to the side because his front legs werent working. I took him back to the vet and ask for an xray of his head and neck and there they found the broken neck and told him he had 29% chance to live and he was in to much pain, and couldnt use the bathroom on his own. I asked if it can be fixed they said no surgury can be done and it would only get worse and his whole spine was swollen. I couldnt see him suffer anymore so i had to make the decsion to put him to sleep and let him go. I am very sad and I really hope you can fix the dog. Ask for an xray of his brain as neck problems do cause brain problems. I wish you the BEST!!!
