I heard G.Shepherd is a very good guard dog but it requires training, is it true ? and it also requires exercise alot. The pet shop people telling me G.S back leg tends to have problem if not taking care properly, this is what I am hesitate for. I love Labrador Retriever and Goldern R., but people telling me they are too friendly to guard the house ??? anyway, am planning to get G.S and Goldern R, will I have problem to put them together ?

Doberman Pinschers are VERY good guard/watch dogs. But, there is only one problem, which is they are very sensitive to very cold weather and too too hot weather., which is why they cannot be suitable police dogs, but they are VERY good watch/guard dogs.

Labradors aren't friendly toward strangers. My lab will bark and bite people on command or without my command. She hasn't even been trained. She loves to protect me. Also I have a Solid black German Shepherd. He hasn't been trained and I give him 2 hours tops a week of exersize. He don't need it I just don't feel like walking him.Only G.S.D with a history of bone disorders will have the problem. To check out about the history on them you have to get a 5 generation pack. It is $15.00 or less if the dog is registered.

HHmm, I've never heard of a dog that didnt need excercise..?? I've never had a Lab but have been around many.. after all they are one of the most popular breeds. Why? Probably because they are known to be very friendly and do well with people of all ages. Im just curious, to the original poster, why do you need a guard dog?

(Sorry, I had to break this up into multiple posts.) Just what we need- another insecure person who will HAVE to Have a big intimidating German Shepherd to tie up in the front yard on a giant chain to bark at the naighbors. These dogs are not for the unexperienced!!! They are not the average dog, for the average owner. I am the owner of a 95 lb german shepherd female. Well, my German Shepherd, Anya, is one of the most high strung and protective dogs Ive ever seen. Sure she is excellent at guarding, but that is only because I have spent much time and resources for her to be that way. Anya is active in schutzhund, which is a very diciplined sport. I cant EVER imagine what would happen if Anya, who has the power and potential to seriously injure someone, was placed in the wrong hands. Having a guard dog, without proper training, can be a huge liability to you. Lets say that "Guard Dog" goes out and bites a 5 year old girl in the face- Whos the one to blame? and Who is the one to get sued. Um.... You!?! Sure you might think 'Oh well my dog will never get out and hurt someone. I wont let it' ... Even Anya gets away from me sometimes, but I trust her enough that she wont go very far and I depend on her recall to bring her back to me. Most GSD's I see, dont have that kind of dicipline, and from the looks of it, it doesnt seem that you have the maturity to own one.

And as for the comment of "Oh well my German Shepherd doesnt need exercice" ... Im not sure about your individual dog, but for the overall breed, German Shepherds need an extrodinary amount of exercise. They were bred as herding dogs, that use to work all day long. OF COURSE THEY NEED EXERCISE. Its when the dog doesnt get exercise, that it becomes a "problem dog". As stated by Anasazi, most/ all dogs need exercise. And yes, most German Shepherd dogs are poorly bred BYB dogs (Back Yard Breeder), where the owners have no regards for the overall health of the breed. They are just in it for the profit. German Shepherds are very prone to Hip dysplasia, a very serious and progressive defect. If you were looking for a quality German Shepherd, you would NOT look on internet places like "puppyfind" or "nextdaypets" ... you would look for reputable breeders who do not advertise. (BTW, no good breeder ever advertises in the newspaper... Most are ByB's).

The average German Shepherd or any dog for that matter, will NOT guard you or your house with its life. Most will bark and growl, maybe even become a little standoffish, but statistics show that in the likelyhood of an intruder, the average untrained house pet, would have a 12% of actually attacking. Just thought you might want to use that tid bit of information. As for golden retrievers and Labradors, I would reccomend these breeds to someone who is an inexperienced dog owner. Most people dont need an attack dog, as a large breed dog with a deep bark will usually scare off potential threats. Think about it- Why would a an intruder pick a house with a scary dog barking at you from the window, verses a house without a dog? They wouldnt. So basically, what im getting at is that for an unexperienced dog owner, you might want to start off with an easier, less intense breed of dog. Most large breed dogs will bark at an intruder approaching, and will usually scare off someone. -Alex

Labs aren't friendly toward strangers? I have had labs my entire life and not once have I owned one who would not lick a stranger to death. Who in their right mind would command a dog to bite? My dogs will alert me when someone or something strange is happening but would never attack. Their bark alone is enough to keep most strangers from entering my home. ashley_my, what are you looking for in a guard dog? Most any breed will ward off a stranger by barking, of course the bigger the breed, the bigger the bark.

My neighbor has a huge german shepard. Extremely intimidating looking but that about it. She got the dog to protect her and her property. One night my neighbor found a strange man sleeping in her bed. She called the police, waited outside with her children. When the cops came they woke him up. He was a drunkered who wandered into the wrong house. Lucky was sleeping next to the stranger on the floor. The funny thing was that the cops asked my neighbor to hold the dog. She replied what are you afraid of, the dog allowed a man to enter the house, find a bed, and go sleepy very comfortably!

I totally agree with you I've never met a lab that wasn't friendly. It's all how you train and treat them that makes them vicious or not. You should have and animal to love it and train it to let you know something is wrong so you can takecare of it not send the dog in after someone to bite their head off

dobermans and german shepherds are supposed to be great guarddogs, but you have to consider that dobermans aren't that great in cold weather, but german shepherds are great in both hot and cold weather.

You may want to try a boxer! Makes a great family member, and is very playful. They will always have you laughing! However, I'm assuming, you just want a dog that looks intimidating to discourage people from trying to break into your home or hurting your family. A boxer will do that for you, they make bark at someone at the door, but they are friendly dogs when your door opens, as long as you socialize them properly.

I have a close friend who has owned German shepherds for nearly her whole life, the minimum she would excerise these dogs is 3 hours a day, and she actively has them participate in schutzhund. I myself have a German shepherd but is only still a pup I have thought about training him in schutzhund because I have always admired the discipline these dogs can have if trained properly, however I decided it was not for me. All of my dogs bark, even growl at strangers, that is all I need. I agree with Tessa on this, it takes a lot of discipline time and experience to train and own a guard dog, it is not for the inexperienced. Almost any dog will bark at a stranger. Also millerlite i have heard that story before but I cant remember where. I also reccomend a lab for you because more then likely he will bark and even growl at a stranger, surely that is all you need?
