I have a 4.5 month old chi that has become aggressive with strangers over the last month or two. We had taken him to a potty training seminar about a month and a half ago and that trainer came over to pick him up and he bit her. Ever since he barks, growls, even tries to bite at strangers that try to pet him. He is so sweet to my family and anyone that he knows, he just doesn't like strangers. My question is, How can I continue to socialize him with people if he tries to bite them all the time? PLEASE help, I don't know what I am going to do! I don't want to get rid of him, he is part of our family and we love him dearly! |

Well, now theres real commitment. Four & a half months old & you're already talking about getting rid of him!!!
I don't think it would be advisable to "rehome" a biting dog. The liability can still come back to you.
Are there children involved here? If so how old? Other pets? What is the dogs day like? Where did you get the dog?
RW gave you some good advice on how to fix it. |

Remember YOU asked!!
Put that Dog down on his own four feet! If he is not trained to walk on a leash train him. Do not carry him anywhere anytime. If he is sleeping in your bed or one of your other family members bed, get him out. He should have his own bed. You need to first help him beat his fears and teach him you don't need him to protect you this can start by walking him on a lead and instead of picking him up to play with him get down on the floor with him.
Do not put him or anyone elce in danger by allowing them to be close enough to get bit until he is better trained. You need to get him in puppy classes with a small Dog trainer. You should also read a couple of books on this breed as well as small dogs in general. It is not to late this Dog can be saved. It will require you to work your butt off but hey no one said Dog ownership is easy. If he doesn't know sit, down, stay and by all means NO BITE you need to start working on that right away. When he starts to growl or snap at someone you need to be able to control him so he should be on a lead any time someone elce is around. When he starts to bark or growl give the lead a tug and say NO!
I have a Chihuahua and she seldom barks at anything, can be picked up and handled by anyone. No one is afraid to come into my home and everyone who meets her says "If I knew my Chihuahua would be as nice as Emily I would get one." I tell them all the same thing, your Dog can be anything you want as long as you are willing to put in the time and energy to work with what you get. So now I tell you, Your Dog is still young he can still be trained. YOU must stop babying him and treat him like a dog.
Look I've met many Chihuahua owners and I've seen all kinds of Chihuahua's. Everytime I run into a barky, biting, naughty Chihuahua their owners treat them like babies, carry them everywhere and give them to much attention, by waiting on their every need. These dogs need to learn early that the world isn't a scarry place and they are tough enough to stand on their own feet and you trust them to do so. By carrying in them all the time they learn they need to be protected and the world is a scarry place.
Find the trainer, warn them he's a biter, so they know what they are getting into. Read those book and get out that lead.
Good luck. |

not defending the person but the very last sentence says "I don't want to get rid of him, he is part of our family and we love him dearly! "
I don't know what else to tell the person but to listen to the advise given. What I was gonna say was crate train, you be the boss, don't carry everywhere. Already said though!! |

Simply do not allow that behavior. This puppy needs a consequence for growling and trying to bite everyone. Tell people not to back down from him or jerk their hands away...that's what he wants and it's how he learned the behavior. He knows if he acts nasty, people will back off. Don't back off...he'll get the message. |

What about a Chihuahua that is 2 years old and he bites. I have had this Dog for 4 months. He sprays when ever he thinks I'm not looking and barks, showes his teeth and will bite any one that tries to pet him. (except my husband and myself oh and our two grandaughters). He will even poop in his own bed! I have started putting him in his crate at night to stop the nightly poop but I keep him in my laundry room with puppy pads most of the rest of the time. I have a bigger, older female Dog that he gets along very well. I am at my wits end. I have been looking for a rescue place for him, and they don't want him because he bites and the liability is to high. What do I do with an older dog? |

I hope you want honestly. Heres how I see it, You get him a belly band and hire a Dog behavioralist and plan to work with him. Or put him down.

we own 3 chiuahuas. and they are just like kids and they all have different personalities.you have to treat them with respect but on the same hand they are cute and adorable DO NOT let them be the boss of you!! and i agree do not reinforce there bad behavior by telling them no and no bite and carry them around like little babies. the smaller breeds are very person protective but they needd to know there limits and what good behavior is.one of our chiuahuas we had to muzzle while training him his new behavior it took about 1 month but he finally cuaght on and we also clicker train. but i do agree that since they are small they have to know there basic commands and stay is very crucial in training. good luck don't give up yet they all need a chance... |

marsha, you would probably get more responses if you started your own thread instead of adding on to a thread that is over a year old.
just click on "new topic".
in the meantime, google NILIF for help in becoming the alpha & getting him under control. he needs to respect you as his leader |

TO: lisamarie619: I read your dilemma concerning your four and a half month puppy, dated Nov 2006, that is about eighteen months ago. Please advise if you found a resolution. I have adopted a rescue mix breed that exhibits the aggressive Chihuahua personality at my neighbors. Please advise what you have learned in the past eighteen months. Thank you. |

a belly band is a type of diaper for a male dog. it is a belt made of material with a place in it to insert a maxi pad....do NOT ask me what a maxi-pad is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Granted this is an old topic. Something else that works well as a makeshift belly band is an ace bandage (I like the 4 inch ones). I cut them in half and take a maxi and stick it to the end of it and wrap. I tuck the end. They are cheap and they work great. They also last so much longer than the Markout band does and dont tangle as easy in the wash. |
