Okay for the record I HAVE tried premium dog food. The results? Canine Caviar-dogs still hungry even after varying amount given. Science Diet-Dry coats. Natural Choice-dry coats. Blackwood-good food BUT dogs wouldn't eat after a few weeks on it AND it's hard to come by in my area. Hundenflocken-GREAT food, VERY expensive in my area AND not easy to come by regularly. All else-not available within 3 hrs of my area. Shipping is NOT an option as I live in Alaska and shipping is more than the product. For everyone out there who seems to think I'm some dumb a** Get off of my A** about feeding what I believe in! Purina PURINA PURINA is the ONLY food which has provided everything I need in a food! My dogs are full, their coats ROCK and yes they poop more than on other food but WHO CARES! I live in ALASKA where it DOESN'T MATTER! I can AFFORD this food which provides EVERYTHING I REQUIRE IN A DOG FOOD! If someone out there wants to ship me something else by all means go for it! Until then understand some of us ARE KNOWLEDEABLE and STILL LOVE PURINA! AAAHHH!

After all this discussion on good vs bad food, I have to say--there must be a reason sone dogs do better on the cheaper foods. And the cheaper foods can't be ALL bad. The food does have to meet minimum standards of nutrition in the USA. In nature, dogs eat some nasty things and thrive. And dogs do eat the hair, hide and all (hair is protein, after all). I would not buy high priced food--I prefer to cook for my dogs. (And I don't feed hair--so don't suggest that)

Here, have a brandy - met ys! (With ice) Although you probably have enough ice. Alaska, wow! Is it nice to live there? Seen lots of pics and stuff - it's beautiful! I also like Purina. At the moment I use Pedigree but am thinking of switching either to Purina or Royal Canin - reason is the same as yours: all the other food these guys talk about aren't available in South Africa! But I do like Purina and have heard lots of good things from friends feeding it to their pets. Hope you feel beter and not anymore!

LOL No alcohol needed. For those of you who don't know, I've been attacked since day 1 for defending Purina. It gets VERY old when people accuse you of not knowing anything about dog food! Criminiy sakes I worked at our local health and feed store where it was my JOB to know about it! I've been accused of not taking care of my children. That I should not own dogs or children for lack of feeding them both properly. That I abuse my dogs for feeding this and the list goes on and on! I've had the theory all along of I'll feed my PURINA and you guys feed what YOU feel is right for YOUR dogs. For some reason people still will NOT stay off of my case! I'll defend Purina to the end due to the results I've personally witnessed with it. My appologies to those who thought it was meant to bash people. There are just those out there that need to understand everything I've said and to stop bashing us continually!

I am also a Purina feeder. I just switched from Iams. I am feeding them Purina One, lamb and rice formula. I havent posted this before, bcuz I was afraid of getting attacked as well. But, I have not had any problems with it. I also feed them a egg or two a week. And I give them what ever meat we eat for dinner at night, and some veggies. And occasionally they get a couple bites of fruit. Christy

Focus along with myself have been bashed and accused of some of the same things that she has by posters on this site for feeding the so called "junk foods" on the market. I feed Iams and my puppy does very well on it. I get great customer service from Iams when I call with a question or concern and the feed store I purchase from. I think we should all feed our pets what we feel is best for our own pooches. I think some on this site refuse to Agree to Disagree. I've done my research on the subject and have found my own reasearch very helpful. I found a website that is an opinion of a holistic vet that gave ratings on some brands of food. It helped give me an outline and some guidelines in which to follow. http://www.naturalholistic.com/handouts/fdguide.htm

I have a 8 month old westie. I just changed her food from Purina One to Californiia Natural Lamb and Rice Puppy food. Her stools were normal on the purina one but I was beginning to think she might have the beginnings of an allergy to it. Her paws were and little red and she was lick and scratching alot. I gradually switched her over to the California Nature over a course of a week. Now her stools are very soft and she has horrible gas. Is this normal? It has only been a week. How long does it usually take to her to get back to normal. Thanks for any help in this matter. Nancy

That's pretty normal. It could be one of two things (or both at the same time). One, her body is flushing out the badness of Purina ONE and that should be done soon. Two, if you switched cold turkey (instead of mixing the new food with the old food over the course of a week), then her digestive system might be upset. That too should resolve itself soon, though you can add a spoonful of pumpkin to help firm up the poop.

Mine is a pure breed champion Shih Tzu. He used to eat Science Diet can food and treats (ONLY) until 6 years old. Now, he is eating homemade diet designed by Professor Willard at Texas A & M University at College Station. He gives Professor Willard recipes fours paws up, and given Dr. Willard a name - Iron Chef.

I have a 1 yr old chihuahua. Royal Canin Chihuahua dry food is always available to her and she also gets one can of Little Caesars wet food daily, which I split into one morning and one evening feeding. I buy the dry food at Petco and the wet food at my grocery store (Ralph's). She is at a very healthy weight.

I am owned by Pomeranians and a Shepherd/Collie mix. They are given Purina Pro-Plan which I purchase at our local feed store.

That is how I feed my pomeranian, only he gets half a thing of ceasar a day, in the morning. I am feeding him the royal canin sensible choice. I am so happy cause this is the food I have gotten best results on. His stool finally looks normal, and he scratches less (because I add in an oil supplement.). And hats off to all of you who feed your animals what you feel is best for them! Don't listen to bashing, if the food works... feed it. I feed royal canin cause it works, and Beemer eats so little, I can afford it. I know some cannot afford to feed their little "pigs" (lol) the expensive stuff. So I think it is great that you feed what works best for your dog, and not what is "the best" in others minds.

I feed my mix breed( from the pound :P) 10 month old pup Orijen, or if I'll be running short on money after using that (it IS expensive) I'll try one of the better Acana foods. They don't sell Innova or Canidae here I'm buying it off the internet, it is MUCH cheaper that way :)

we all seem to have different opinion on our dog food...which goes back again to .."my dogs better than your dog, my dogs better then yours, my dogs better cause he eats ken-l ration, my dogs better than yours...." so....since noone agrees and everyone has their own preference....heres my question...back when we were kids...our parents fed whatever was available at the local grocery and what was on sale...gravy trian...ken l ration...the funny worming looking pouch things...funny hamburger patty looking things...whatever was on sale..didnt matter...and noone even thought about dog food...good or bad...my dad fed suit at the end of the winter for shedding...our dogs lived for 17 and 18 years without incidence...what has changed??? is there any proof that these whooplah foods are making our dogs any healthier than they were years ago?? i can tell you that my girlfriend lost her entire group to diamond dog food...none of really know what is in the food we feed unless we make it ourselves...i have fed many different foods over the years..but i always go back to purina...ill bet that we are feeding the best foods that we can while going through the mcdonalds drive throughs with our kids...come on...isnt it whatever works for each and every one of us?? when the dog food recall happened...i stuck with purina....im sooo glad i wasnt using diamond....dane will have some answers her as she seems to have done her homework on a lot of issues...at least we all know that she does a lot of research and reading on lots of subjects...and knows where to find massive amounts of info...do we all agree with raw...no we dont..but i would seriously like to know...what the difference is nowdays compared with 30 years ago...as far as our dogs living longer lives oe having less health issues due to the foods they are being fed?? dane..you out there?? do you have this answer??????i was raised with a fox terrier who came to me from kansas on a train...which my dad foundin the outdoor life magazine...he ate...the above old school foods...and begged at tour table for leftovers...suit in the late winter...(soo-it)....he lived for 17 years...with no issues...a rat terrier...same situation...18 years...my mother in law had a collie...she fed him...gravy train...every week she made him a pan of cornbread and divided it up over the week along with a raw egg...daily on top his food...he lived to be 13 years old....so...what is the real answers here??? someone help out......
