I have a new puppy and he had been outside and I brought him in and gave him a bath when I noticed lumps on his back leg, well as I kept washing the lumps started coming off. So I kept washing til they were all gone as I looked closer they looked like tiny grains of rice,so I called the vet and took some for them to inspect and to my shock she said they were fly eggs! So I came home and scrubbed him again and he has been fine but now all of the sudden he has diarrhea and and his bottom is swelled out he will not sit down it is so swelled. Does anyone know what this may be? Could it be something from the eggs? It really has me worried,he is acting ok he wants in the house and for me to hold him but his hind parts are just to nasty and I have tried to was him but I dont want to hurt him either.

Well give him a little yogurt for the runs to hold him over until you can get him back to the vet. Rinse him in warm water with mild soap in it to get the poo off him so you can ohld him. You don't need to scrub, just swish him around in the water. Then get him back to your vet tomorrow.

If they were "fly eggs" then they were maggots. I sounds more like segments of tape worms to me. You can also give him some Pepto Bismol or canned pumpkin for the diarrhea.

The diarrhea could be causing the swelling, however it could also be something else, so I would suggest taking your dog back into the vet. For the diarrhea, yes I would also suggest yogurt. As for the maggots, dilluted peroxide on the areas where they were can help. Did your dog previously have a wound that attracted the flies to lay their eggs on your dog? That is usually the cause.

I suspect this dog will continue to have these kinds of problems until you keep him well cleaned and indoors. I'm sure this dog is very miserable right now, dogs can sometimes hide pain well. They can't walk up to you and say "I'm hurt, please fix it." Please bring him back to the vet, get him nice and cleaned up, get something for his diarrhea and keep him indoors with you. Then just take him out on a walk frequently to go potty until the diarrhea is resolved. Then you can let him back out in your yard for play time, but not to live. Gosh that poor dog. I hope your vet will help him quickly.

If this dog is an outdoor dog, then yes he needs to be brought inside. The problem could escalate into something HUGE. I have seen some terrible maggot infestations resulting in an animal being put down because they lived outdoors.

*nods* Two years ago a co-worker lost a litter of kittens because she allowed them to be birthed and live outdoors. All kittens died, all of them died of internal maggots eating them alive. The poor babies were the living dead the afternoon I cared for them, before the owner finally took them into a vet to find out what was wrong and the kittens passed away. The feeling of holding THOSE kittens still haunts me to this day, and beleive me, I've held many kittens both dead and alive.

That's really awful. I did see an Animal Cops episode that showed a Rottweiler and her puppies. One had a gaping wound on its back with maggots which was put down, and all but one puppy died. It was horrible.
