My sister just gota new 9wk old puppy from a breeder and ohter thatn the fact that she has two hernias located at both asis's, she is fairly healthy, except for the fact that she won't eat. She has resorted to using a syringe, or push dropper to manually force feed the dog as it is important that she eat and gain some weight. The dog is a malta-poo and onl weighs a little over 1lb. Please help. Any advice as to certain brands or foods that are good for her or at least won't hinder her and help get her to eat, or tricks to intice her?

I do not recommend "force feeding" Instead what can be done is, put some wet dog food on your finger, stick it on the roof of its mouth, hold the mouth shut and rub its throat, gently. I had a sick puppy a few years back that would not eat, after trying this, he started to gain a little weight and eating on his own. It will take alot of time and patience to do this, but hopefully it will work for your sister as well.

When I have a hard time getting puppies to eat, I turn it into a game. I put the puppy in my lap or on the floor and flick the food around lightly so the puppy will "chase" it. Once they get it in their mouth they chew it up while they're trying to "catch" the next piece. Use just a few pieces of food at first and add more pieces as you go. Most puppies like "moving objects". If the puppie's blood sugar is low, I give it light corn syrup or nutri-cal first. Also, it's VERY important that the puppy is getting enough fluid. I DO use a syringe for that.

I'm not too familiar with the Yorkies, but in my opinion, any puppy/dog that won't eat, should be seen by a vet. Such a little dog can lose weight quickly if he's not eating, and that can create bigger problems. Good luck!!

Why was the dog sold with hernias? The puppy needs to see a Vet right away, if it already hasnt. The vet will know what to do. The breeder should A. Take the puppy back, and give a refund or replacement, or B. Pay for all of the vet costs. Have her contact the breeder immediately!
