Everyone here has pretty much posted all there is to know about blue and liver GSDs - basically, they're GSDs off a different (faulted) color, however as rescuewench said they DO NOT have any health problems related to their coloring. Click below to see my own liver GSD's photo album.

i agree the diluttes are "faulted in conformation" due to breed standard BUT they are still acceped and showable - sadly the standard will make them lose as the points will be hit HARD due to lack of pigmentation.

but again unless you buy your dilute from a byb... you should have no problem with health issues other than any "regular " issues any coloered GSD would or could have.

* with the exemption of the panda monsters.

True enough. But at least it gives info in one place instead of searching around on different sites for all the various types!

That last liver GSD posted is real cute ^_^

Hey peeps I'm Hells68 lol - I lost my password...

OK ANYWAYS - Blue & Liver shepherds can be shown in all of the classes, Agility, Comformation ETC

The only catch is GSD can only be shown if there nose leather is SOLID black - 99.9% of all blue & liver german shepherds have blue, chocolate, gray, or pinkish nose leather.

Back to the point...I want a liver shep as a pet, I already own a Black & Tan GSD and I would like a pal for him.

Here's the website that I LUV
www.bluedogs.8m.com

I never breed any of my pets also - I'm not a breeder!
I basicly just want a GSD that's a little dirrent if you know what I mean Oh yes and blue & liver GSDs are JUST like regular colored GSD there are NO diffrents cept the color of course lol. Temp is the same, Health is the same, Looks are diffrent.

You guys don't understand - Blue & Livers are NOT like panda Shepherds, They are an accutal coat color. Go ahead look in all the GSD books you have and you'll see. I think breeding blue & liver sheps would be ok since they have no gentic problems do to there coat color. There are healty, happy, normal GSD

Blues & Livers pop out randomly...1/350 sheps will have a blue/liver pup.

Ok here I'll explain.....

Both of these dogs, dam & Sire carry the blue gene, NOW LISTEN (They have 2 pups lol )

DAM: Uhh Black & Red I guess
SIRE: Solid Black

Since both parents carry the blue gene the pups have chocies to make

Pup 1 Picks Black from his sire & Blue from his dam - THE PUP WILL BE BLACK - BUT WILL CARRY THE BLUE GENE - MAKING THAT HE MAY HAVE BLUE PUPS NOW OR THEN

Pup 2 Picks blue from his sire & blue from his dam - THE PUP WILL BE BLUE - HE WILL CARRY THE GENE AND WILL HAVE BLUE PUPS

Ok get it now?

yes its just like siberian huskies. the white and copper (red) are a recessive gene. usually they have a black base..but if a male and femal both have a white recessive gene then at least one of the Puppies will be white. my puppy came from a litter of different colors. her brother was grey and white (like her mother) and she is white (like her father).

i would like to get a black GSD one day...i saw one not that long ago and i thought he was beautiful. also, my best friend has a tan and black GSD whose father was a all black GSD (his name was midnight ??)

Most peeps think Solid Blacks are more likely to have Blues then Black & Tan - THAT IS NOT TRUE! It's all based on genes

that is the link that i posted above. it explained the genetics a little better than some of the others. i bred gsd's ten years ago. harley is a pup that i kept. he is almost ten years old. black and tan ( my fav). he had a very large hematoma a few years back that cause some crinkling in the ear cartiledge. he is still a handsome boy for his age. and very large for the breed at 120 pounds.

GSD of unique colors are just that. It is most important to remember. A sound, athletic Dog is what you should look for first. Color second. AKC considers color dilutes faults. Prejudice of color is as shameful as breeding dogs with poor hips and week temperments. All colors are beautiful and worthy of breeding if they are like the old fashion straight sound shepherd.

For more information on these wonderful dogs.
I own a 7 year old blue GSD. She is the most exciting and smart Dog I've ever had.
I wish I could post a picture of her and her sister in here.

I have blue, liver, white, tri, blacks, in all coat types and all patterns. The only differences between them all is their color/pattern and who 'they are'.

www.k9-pines.com

Lots of pictures, info and a new litter of liver just born!

Quote RESCUEWENCH: the livers , & blues are not mutants * the only mutation so far is the panda..( in GSD's)

they are undesirable "flaws" in the breed , but are throw backs to flawed dogs - or dogs that carried that...

Anyone who knows anything about genetics will tell you that any litter of GSD's with a blue, liver, or white has to have two parents that carry that recessive gene. The only difference between the blacks and the other colors in these litters is that the blacks also have the dominant gene for a black. They carry the recessive gene and can pass it on to their offspring if mated with another Dog who carries the gene. It is the same with red hair and green eyes in humans. Are you going to say that these people are flaws and should not be "bred"? These dogs are no different than any other GSD except they look different. The same problem exist in weimaraner breeding except the blue that is considered a defect and thought to cause sensitivity to light is darker than the two accepted colors of the breed. This way of thinking is an outrage and should be stopped. I do agree that people should inbreed their dogs to achieve a certain color but to say that responsible breeding is not possible is ignorant because people have been doing it for years to get black GSD's. I would actually be more scared of inbreeding in blacks than the other colors of GSD's. I am actually wanting to find either a blue/silver or a cinnamon liver/silver. O.K. I'm going to stop ranting now.
