I don' know how to spell this new designer mutt but it is a cross between a Dachshund and Yorkie. A client of mine has recently purchased one. She looks like a yorkie with the body of a Dachshund. I informed my client that she has more money than brains. She bought her from a local "breeder" for $1200.00.

im not a huge yorkie fan and ruining a Daschunds look by mixing it with anything is such a shame. but if the Dog is like u say, a yorkie just with an elongated body, why on earth did your client not just get a Purebred Yorkie? will people never learn?? |

Definately more money than brains. For heavens sake, why do people pay soooo much money for MUTTS when they can get a really nice purebred for that amount of money. It is beyond me why anyone would do that when, if they want a mutt, they could save a life and go to a shelter or pound and get one. |

I know. I am imagining this breed and it seems quite ugly, to be brutally honest. I love all dogs, mutts or not, but I would go to a pound if I wanted a mutt, not pay 1000's for them. I learned my lesson after I got Gizmo. Harley is a mutt, but we didn't know it was bad when we got him. But Gizmo we have figured out is NOT a mutt, although they gave us the wrong papers. He just got confused with all of the litters and gave us the wrong parents' names, shows you what a good breeder he was. He looks nothing like any of the bichon/Poodle mixes. He looks like a Toy Poodle, just a little bit poorly bred. My parents get mad at me when I say that, but I tell them that I'm not saying that he is any less of a wonderful, loving, puppy. He is wonderful and is the love of my life (along with Harley). But both were poorly bred, and it's the "breeders" fault. Nothing is wrong with the dogs except one is a mix and one isn't breed standard. It's the look I'm talking about. They are still as adorable as anything. But they aren't something I would ever pay as much money as I did for those guys on a mutt and a Dog that is not breed standard again. And I would never buy from a (back yard) "breeder" like him again. But you learn these things, and sometimes it's the hard way, but you still learn. And we have two happy, healthy, loving, adorable Puppies that we wouldn't trade for the world. They are loved and that's what matters. I love them so much.
LOL now I can't wait until I get home now so I can give them hugs and kisses and hold them and cuddle with them. I miss them a lot now, lol. |

I know that none of us have anything against mutts, and there's plenty of sweet, kind mutts in shelters that need homes.
I just hate these stupid names and high prices for these "hybrids", "designer dogs", etc. I'm sick of breeders who breed mixes on purpose to sell them. I don't like people who buy one of these mix Puppies. then they don't like how the puppy looks when he/she is older, so they take him/her to a shelter.
If you like this mix, you could probably find a Dachshund/Yorkshire Terrier mix, and any other mix, in a shelter and adopt him/her for less than $100 (my local shelters are $58 and $99). |

I agree the shelter would be the best place to look but, who wants a yorkie mix from the shelter when you can have a Dachskie? |

Nope, I knew you were being sarcastic. That's why I laughed.
But yeah, I know what you mean. Maybe it's me, but I don't see the difference between a mix from a shelter and a mix with a cute name slapped on it from a BYB, except for the price. The shelter is going to save you hundreds, being that they charge between 50 and 200, and with that there is a lot included. With a BYB mix with a cute name slapped on it, it is usually sold in the high hundreds, and sometimes in the 1000. I don't understand people's logic sometimes? |

Its the "name" of the breed that "hook" people. Its like "if no one else has it, than I will get a lot of attention" crap.
I love mutts, but I mostly like the purebreds too. Simply because a lot of the mutts that come into the shelters and rescues are born real cute when they are Puppies but to out real ugly as adults. Take my local pet shelters; those dogs when I look at them on petfinder.com are so ugly I find my self almost throwing up whatever I just ate.
But, there are some who are so cute you can't help but get them from the shelters. I plan on getting my first Dog (in a long time) from a shelter or resuce. I'm looking at either a Pb Chow Chow or a Chow/golden or retriever mix.
Than my second Dog Im trying to find a breed I like. That would be the time I get a two month old puppy. I plan on waiting two years. Because the apartment I want is $555 plus the deposits annd the pet fee. I plan on adding a fish tank though, either salt water fish or tropical fish. |

For $1200 you could buy a show quality pure bred puppy. |

so why would you spend that money on a mutt? I have a mutt, but even I, not knowing that it was bad, didn't pay that much. And I never would have payed that much for a mix breed. I mean when it gets that high, you have to notice something. Why didn't they buy a show quality pure bred yorkie, or daschund with that money? |

Maybe...
- They don't know the truth behind the whole "designer dog" craze. - They are (no offense to those of you with high incomes) wealthy and don't really care about spending $1200 on a mutt. - They think this is a new breed. - They buy a cute puppy on impulse and, as we've said, won't like the way he/she looks when they're older. - They're getting a little "designer mix" as an accessory.

I've seen some adult mixes that I thought were cute. But how they look is just going to depend. People have said on other threads that you just don't know what you'll get. You can breed a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, and you might end up with a puppy that looks just like a Golden, and didn't get the Poodle fur.
I saw a pic of a Saint Berdoodle, and he/she just looked like a big, dark brown poodle. You can't see the Saint Bernard at all. |
