" planned to write to the Kennel Club and breed clubs about this if I could and would like any advice you can give about what I could include (as well as the albinism condition). Are there any other disqualifications that the US standard has in place? Are there any other breeds that I would do well to mention?"
I would suggest you write to the breed club or clubs of the Doberman breed in your country. I know that they have already petitioned the KC to do something about the albinos when the first albino bitch arrived there several years ago. I think they may have gotten a tracking system in place, but that's all, which makes them on the same page as the US, except that the US has a DQ for albinism in the conformation ring and the UK doesn't.
I've only had 3 breeds, Doberman, IG, and GSD. I know a little about a lot of breeds, more about IGs, and quite a lot only about Dobermans. If you don't ask specific questions there's nothing I can answer. |

Hmm. I was going to ask for stats but I guess I can look those up online. You say you're in touch with lots of british breeders. Do you know of any who were active in opposing the entrance of albinos to Britain? Could you provide contact (email) of breeders who are active in lobbying for disqualifications in standards? Or who are simply active in trying to eradicate albinism? |

I *was* in contact with them at the time the bitch was imported, I haven't talked to them in probably years.
The only UK breeder whose kennel name I know is Christine of Kerioak, she has a website, you can go there and get her email address and look at her "all natural" dogs at the same time. She is inolved in a lot of things in the UK and I know she is very aware of the albino issue and those who are producing them. |

Thank you very much. I'll find the website now. I'm sure I've seen it before, as I've seen pictures of Kerioak Dobes on the Anti-Docking Alliance website. |

| Quote puglet: what a coincidence, i was just about to start a topic about docking and cropping after a conversation with a girl in work who was saying about a friend of hers who is a breeder whose dobe pups are all... |
well.most of it depends on the person who does the docking and or cropping.if it's done right....it wont bother the dog.and as for the show aspect..i was reading the AKC Doberman Pinscher standard and it doens't list a Dog not having docked or cropped tails and ears as a disqualifying fault but it's all about looks.most show breeders strive to maintain what the dogs were developed for and what they did.and Dobies must, like all other breeds, have a balanced appearance.now adobie with drop ears and long tails dont look balance do they?personally i dont think there is anything wrong with docking and cropping dogs. a dobie is supposed to have "a proud carriage reflecting great nobility and temperament".uncropped and undocked dobies don't look like that do they? |

I had both of my pit bull's ears done, had no problems, paid 90.00 and they look great. If you would like pictures, I have them from the day of the surgery up to the the time they were fully healed. Just e mail and I will send them. crazyaboutprophett@hotmail.com |

i got my doberman puppy at 8 wks with uncropped ears and im glad i did cuz the breeder would had cropped them. I didnt want to put Bruce through unnessary pain. and he looks so cute with big floppy ears! i didnt want to hurt his ears for looks. like his tail!! poor tail he has a big scar on the tip that it looks like hair will never grow back!!! i didnt want something to go wrong with his pretty ears so i left them natural like nature intended. everyone tells me that Bruce is goregous and thats enough for me, he is a great dog. almost 9 mths. |

I am the owner of three dobermans. One red, one blue, and a fawn. All are docked simply because a dobe with a tail is an awful looking Dog and there is a good reason for docking a dobe's tail aside from ascetics. As for cropping, one of my dogs is cropped military style and two are not cropped. I have two large males and they are well identified as dobe's however more people interact with them than with my female who is cropped. Since there is no benefit for the cropping and it is now illegal in every country except the US and they are moving towards eradicating the practice more and more breeders of dobe's are selling them un-cropped. It's definitely a personal preference and shouldn't be taken lightly, simply because finding a good vet to do the cropping is difficult. I agree with the breeder who automatically crops and docks before sale. Unfortunately my european breeder did not allow for that since it's illegal in GERMANY for them to crop the ears now. Cropping or not every one of my dogs is well liked by all. Most prefer the uncropped one's over the cropped because they "seem friendlier" although no they do not look like the "picture of dobermans" in the AKC manual. |

I can honestly say that I am still surprised that Danes never had their tails cropped when ears where done. One, the hurt like hell when they hit you and Two, Happy tail is a pain to try to heal, blood gets every where every time the Dog hits something and of course they pay no mind and before you know it you look like a crime seen with the blood spatter. If I had designed the breed i would have left the ears alone and cropped the tail. Tail cropping and dewclaw removal,in itself is not as pain full as ears and in a matter of moments its not bleeding and it doesnt yelp if it gets bumped, its nervous system has still not fully developed like it would at the 8-12 weeks most people crop.
Unfortunalty Im under contract to crop any dane Puppies ears that this bitch I have will produce that im a co owner in. |
