They are totally different breeds and are not even in the same group. GSD's are in the herding group, and Doberman Pinschers are in the working group.

People generally like one or the other for all kinds of reasons, but wondering which one is "better" is just really not even a question that can be answered - it is more a matter of preference.

I agree its a personal choice. I have never hadd a dobe but I can tell you I have met a few and I like the GSD better. Just a personal choice, The only draw back to the GSD is all that darn furr floating around the house. Imposible to go to work one day without hairs on me....lol. But I love them anyway.

For me personally, it's the Doberman hands down. Many many reasons. We've had both Dobes and GSDs. The GSD sheds WAY too much for my liking. While the Dobes shed too, since the hair is so short it's hardly noticeable. I personally think Dobes look much more aggressive than GSD since you can see her body outline and can easily see their stance. Dobes are smaller weight wise, which I like. I like medium sized dogs. The only problem is, you HAVE to be able to train them WITHOUT being afraid of them. If you're afraid of them they'll sense it and try to run the house. If you want a Dog that can hold it's own and still looks aggressive, then Dobe would be the way to be. Most people are friendly around GSD since they're commonly used with police. Either way, if you're looking for an outside dog... neither Dog is the way to go. They're both very family oriented.

However, if you want a Dog that doesn't look too aggressive, but will hold it's own under every circumstance, get an APBT. They're very strong powerful dogs. While both the Dobes and the GSDs are as well, they don't really compare to the APBT. It really all just depends on your personal preference and what exactly you want.

The Dobes bark is generally enough to scare people away. They have a very deep bark (which is what I like). The GSD has a deep bark too, but all the ones I've been around haven't really scared people away the way Dobes too. Same with walking down the street, most people are very hesitant to even get near a Dobe, but a GSD they don't mind.

I find it funny but people in my neighborhood are afraid of Mattress. She's a GS and Black Lab mix. I think the reason people are intimidated by her is because she's getting very large now, and when she begins to bark the hair on her back stands straight up sort of like a cat. She has a very boyish bark which also scares people away. Doberman's I must say are more intimidating than German Shepherd's but for guarding i'm not sure. I guess it would all depend on the individual Dog and what exactly the owner wants out of the personality guarding wise.

In my own experience.. when it comes to guarding, the dobe is a little more. Menina (F. DOBE) would always jump at the door and look at the window when somebody knocked and start barking up a storm. Jake (M. GSD) would as well. Riley (M. DOBE) was definitely the more aggressive one of the three. Anytime we took them for walks seperately, everybody would kind of shy away from the two Dobes, but when I walked the GSD everybody would ask if they could pet him.

But that's just in my own experience. I've only ever really been around those three dogs (for GSD and Dobe), so I don't know if it's standard for the Dobe to be more guarding of the house, but they were. The GSD was as well, but he stood back and let the Dobes do the scaring, unless he was the only one home.. then he'd go at it.

I know what you mean. When we had our GSD we had to brush him 50 times a day. And we STILL had to get the sticky roller out to clean off the couches and stuff. The sad part is, he wasn't even ALLOWED on furniture, but it all ended up there anyways, lol.

The doberman is not for everyone. Its not a generic Dog that just happens to have a different look but a very appealing one. The visual appeal of the doberman is the look of eagles. There is no such thing as an ugly doberman pinscher some are just more beautiful than others. Are you ready to live with a doberman? Devoted yes demanding yes. They are not an ornament. They have an inherent ability to guard and protect. They are demanding oh how it can be demanding i have 5. The Dog jsut wants to back up and sit on the couch next to you or just on your lap. Their head will always be pushing into your hand for a pat.Extremely energetic breed quite rambunctious especially when with a playmate. They are so smart have found the red ones are very smart. The bond between doberman and family is incredibly strong and the dogs willingness to protect that family is legendary. Be aware that the doberman has been toned down the original temperamnet of the breed but good breeders still want to retain boldness fearless outgoing and up for anything anytime anywhere. Over agressive dobs are in the minority and should be avoided at all cost. I am of the opinion that most dobs from american lines still have an inherent suspocion of things that are not right, strangers who may be acting inconsistently or threats to family or property. Mine are good at patroling perimeter fences and bark and threaten when necessary.

I love both dogs. They are both very loyal and great at guarding. The doberman does look more intimidating but the GSD can hold its ground as well. But remember all dogs have their own personalities and some Dobies might not guard as good as others. For example: Everyone believes that all APBTs are vicous and mean. So not true. I had an APBT when I was about eight. She ws the sweetest Dog ever. One day our neighbors decided they were going to let their APBTs into my yard while me amd my mother went to the store (we never left her outside before but she didn't want to come in and we were only going to be gone for 10 minutes. Unfortunately Jessica was not able to hold her ground against 2 fighting pitbulls (really sad) and was literally torn up. It was so sad but the vet was able stict her up and she was fine. Why do people fight their dogs? It's so sad not to mention stupid!!!

I love Dobermans, German Shepards, Rottweilers, and Saint Bernards. I would feel very safe having either one of those with me, and I like big dogs. I'm going to be 18 in a couple of months, and when I have my own place, I want at least one of those four breeds.

i don't even think it matters. It just depends how much you train it and how well you do. Besides, thats just one Dog you're talking about. THere are other dobe and some arent in very good shape either. So it doesn't matter which one protect better or not or which one is stronger.. They both protect differently then eachother.
