I have a 1 and half year old American Bulldog female named Abby and I have been looking for a coat that will keep her short fur warm this winter. Petco's sizes are too small for her because she has a wide chest. I was thinking of buying a horse one especially made for dogs but those are way to exspensive. Does anyone know a good place or website to buy Abby a coat? Her hieght from the withers is: 24" Her chest in the front is: 8"

Just my 2 cents here. Instead of worrying about your dog keeping warm with a jacket of sorts. Why not just keep her inside most of the time? When she's outside running for a bit then she'll be just fine and warm enough. lol My dogs HAVE a warm, thick coat and I STILL keep them inside most of the time! They won't be put on their runs again until springtime hits. They run and play a few times a day of course but when you exersize you stay warm anyway! I was just thinking that she may not WANT to keep a blanket or jacket on! lol I don't think mine at least would...well it'd stay on until they chewed it off anyway! lol Good luck with your search! I'm sure there must be places that specify just for larger breeds!

www.Petedge.com has some jackets. They have sizes to XL. They are faily inexpensive too. I picked up some at walmart for 7 bux each. They are quite similar to human coats.

At Walmart there is an adorable hoodie made for dogs. It looks like a regular hoodie, except the arms are positioned a different way and it has elastic around the waist area. I'm not sure exactly how much they were but they have all different sizes.

what do you guys think about booties for dogs, I just moved to Philly from SC and I have never really encountered snow, should I put booties on my dogs when they go out or are their paws durable to withstand the cold snow?

I got some of those one's too. I got 3 for each dog. They were I think 6.97, I snuck off and put those on layaway, didn't want hubby seeing me buying more dog stuff. I got the dogs the shimmering silver jackets, I also got Ed the brown fake lamb one too because he is just kinds boyish and that one looked like it was more "manly". He hasn't worn it yet, but I am sure it will look nice on him. He's going through a 'dont touch me' phase right now.

I was going to get one for Mattress but I passed it up. Her hair seems to be growing out quite long considering winter is on the way. It's strange. German Shepherds usually have a semi-short coat as well as Labs, but hers is growing out like crazy. She's shedding her short coat, and growing in longer hair so i'm going to leave her without a sweater. Ginger on the other hand is different. She gets so cold sometimes because her hair is so short. Sometimes even when it's only 70 degrees outside, she needs a sweater. As for the booties, i'm not sure about them. I've never used them because I live in Florida. We're moving to Georgia next year though where there will be snow so I would have to see if they would tolerate them then. I see many dogs in snow that do just fine without booties. Some dogs have sensitive feet though, and some just don't like stepping in water, or on something cold. It all depends on the dog I guess.

In NJ we always used booties for when we took our dogs for a walk or was outside playing with them in the snow. When we let them outside just to use the bathroom, they didn't mind not having them on. But after a while in the snow they'd always get ancy so we only put them on if they were going to be outside for more than 10/15 minutes.

Yeah it's a pretty big move. We are packing up everything in June and hitting the road. 7 hour drive from here to Atlanta. I think my father wants to be near his hometown of Memphis. He grew up there, and said he loved it. We will only be a few hours away so he can go visit. I'm very excited about Georgia though. It should be a big change for our pets since they are used to warm weather, but with their long coats (except for Ginger) they should love the snow and cold weather. Mattress is half shepherd. She has the narrow snout, the eyebrows, and tan markings all over her, but the rest of her is black. What a little darling. She's a great dog.

I had the botties too when I got Rico. He hated them and still hates them. But they did come in handy a couple Rico stepped on a bee and wouldn;t leave his foot alone.

LOL Are you kidding me??? Sorry gang but all this kind of talk cracks me up! Dogs paws are tough enough for snow. No problems. They will get calloused and hard to stand the ice as well. All with time. It's a natural part of bein a dog. Some dogs pads are more sensitive however to ice. We had our yellow lab for 8 yrs and every single winter her pads would chunk off and we'd have to doctor her up. Nothing major, just thin pads. Anyway I wouldn't worry about the dogs pads in the snow. They'll be fine. If you're going running or something like that THEN I'd consider using booties. Just romping around in the snow personally I'd let them be. Their pads will never toughen up otherwise. Here sled dogs use booties yes. BUT they're also running on all kinds of turf and ice and muck and such. They could seriously get hurt if they didn't wear them. Just my 2 cents. PS Keep in mind I'm also coming from a land where it runs -20 and colder every winter for some time. lol My dogs have been fine!
