Yes, it does cost more early on, it's worth having someone knowedgable looking at your pup. The shots do cost money, but you can purchase your heartworm and flea and tick meds cheaper. But my thoughts are the same with my dogs as they are with my kids, I take them to the doctor if there is a problem I feel I cant handle, and the only difference is there is no cheap copay with a dog as there is with kids. That was something I had to consider when I got both of my dogs. Best of luck, Sometimes your local community will have FREE rabies shots or whatever, LOOK into it.

Check your local SPCA or Humane Society, most of them have low cost spay and neuter as well as low cost shots.

Oh, if you think shots are bad, good luck with spay/ neuter's! I suggest going to your local spca and looking to see if they have a low cost spay or neuter. I would also suggest that every week, you put money aside and start collecting incase of an emergency. I know it seems pointless, but if you ever run into an emergency issue, it can really come into handy. Even if its 5 dollers, it will start adding up.

Why would shots be bad?!

Tessalicious9 is talking about the price of the shots being bad, not the shot itself. Read the whole question, answer, whatever. I don't think anyone here would think that getting a dog it's shots is a bad thing considering it's the law(at least in my state) to even register your dog.

When you go to the vet to get your dog shots, it is not the actual "shot" that costs alot of money. On average, it is about $15-20. If you look at the actual break-down of your bill, you will see that the majority of the cost comes from the fee that is endured by just walking through the door of the vet's office. It doesn't matter what you are going to the vet for, there is a "see the vet" fee for everyone that walks through the door and it usually averages $45-55 dollars. Even if you are just going to have your pet checked out, they will charge this initial fee, irregardless of whether the dog has anything wrong with it. As for getting shots for a puppy. DO IT!!! Parvovirus is the number 1 killer of dogs (especially dogs under 1 year old). You will end up paying a couple hundred dollars in shot bills by the time the dog is 6 months old because they need a parvo shot at 2 months, 3 months and 6 months. They are not actually "safe" from parvo until after the 3 month vaccination because the mother's antibodies are still fighting against foreign fluids when they are 2 months old. For this reason, with my first dog, I carried her every place that we went unless she was going "potty" in her designated spot until she was 3 and a half months old. Parvo is everywhere. It gets tracked around on other dog's paws, on people's shoes, on bird droppings and it is extremely fatal! I have an aunt who did not get her dog "Charlie" any shots because they were too "expensive" but he contracted the disease when he was 8 months old and she ended up paying over $400 in vet bills to try and save his life but he was put to sleep in the end. It would have only cost her $65 dollars to get him the shots in the first place and she would still have her beloved puppy today if she would have been a responsible owner in the first place. We all love dogs so much. They depend on us for life and it is our responsibility to care for them. Hope this info is helpful to you.
