For social studies we had to tell a civics issue speech so here's mine (I only have 2500 character max so this is only half the speech) I'll put the rest on later: Pit Bull Terriers came to the U.S in the 1800s. In 1898 the UKC (United Kennel Club) recognized the breed as the American Pit Bull Terrier. A good breeder will breed a Pit Bull for its temperament. But others such as illegal drug dealers will use them for protection or fighting them for money. As we speak, there are probably many dogs who are bleeding in a pit, left to die. Its a sad thought. But we have sad people in our world. Many people will ruin the breed for such awful things. Before Pit Bulls are asked innocence they are found guilty for being Pit Bulls. Many owner activists are protesting the Pit Bull Terrier ban along with people who own Rottweilers or any big muscular looking dog. The truth is any Dog can bite. Why choose to ban the Pit Bulls? Media. Thats why. Youve probably heard stories on the news about a Pit Bull attacking a man or child. But do you think the media wants to show a Labrador Retriever attacking someone? It happens. But because so many people have labs as family pets and labs are suppose to be so gentle, the media doesnt show them. In fact, people have been killed from dachshunds, golden retrievers, Yorkshire terriers, Labrador retrievers, Pomeranians, Lhasa apsos, and the list goes on. |

The reason Pit Bulls are so hated by most in this country and others is because of their jaw capacity and what huge damage they can do when they do bite. Many people have been seriously injured by toy dogs, I'm sure, but how often does that happen, and what are the chances of it under normal circumstances? ANOTHER reason why people go after pits--half of these "accidents" aren't even performed by pit bulls. Their are many breeds that look very much like them and people are quickest to think, 'pit bull'. The Dogue de Bordeax, Amercian Stafforshire Terrier, the American Bulldog, many others and some will even acuse the Bull Terrier. I know it seems strange to us--most of us here, including myself, own and adore this breed. But not everyone understands how lovable these dogs can be with the proper care and training, and how vicious Doxies and Min Pins can be the the same thing! |

Here's the rest of the speech: Councils and Commissioners have banned pit bulls. Not taking in the fact that few of these dogs actually bite or that its the owners fault for training it to be vicious. There way of dealing with things is to just ban them, ban them all. Certain cities and towns in certain states ban them or are in the process to be. Many people will have to relocate if they want to keep there Dog or put the Dog to sleep. No pit bulls will be allowed back into the state legally. Others states allow pit bulls but they have to be muzzled in public. Insurance companies will cancel house insurance if you have a pit bull in the house. Will banning pit bulls really lower the Dog attack rate? The answer is no for many reasons. Criminals and Dog fighters will find other dogs to use such as an Akita or a Rottweiler. People will buy Puppies not knowing the responsibilities of socializing and training them. Maybe they will leave the Dog in the basement for the rest of its life and only go down to feed it. Eventually, theyre going to have a big vicious dog. That Dog will end up being put to sleep and its the owners fault. Like children, dogs need to learn whats right and wrong, whats acceptable and unacceptable. Without that, the Dog could being heading towards euthanasia. When people commit serious crime they go to jail. When dogs commit a crime they dont have a trial, they dont even have a jail. They have a needle that kills them. So before you sign a petition agreeing to banning all pit bulls then think of the fact that all dogs have potentially the chance to be dangerous and that its not fair to single out one specific breed because some un-responsible owners didnt take the time to train or socialize. Just think about that.

I 100% agree. That is just wrong what they do. They just did what people trained them to do, now there ones paying the ultimate price. I just had to write a speech for school and I picked Pit bulls. My teacher could tell how much I believed that she sent me for State Championship, so I hope my speech makes people take a stand. |

First let me say, great speech. Much of what you say in your speech is spot on but I have a question or two. One. Where did you find your facts to support this statement..."In fact, people have been killed from dachshunds, golden retrievers, Yorkshire terriers, Labrador retrievers, Pomeranians, Lhasa apsos, and the list goes on."
2nd How do you address fact that PB's have impulse control issues that most understand can not be trained out of the breed.
Now before I get hate mail, let me remind you all that my own father has a PB and has had her for years. I think she is awesome and I don't dislike the breed as a whole. I personally dislike "most" of the people I've met who own the breed because they either refuse to understand the breed they have and don't take the needed actions to train and control their dogs, which puts their dogs and the general public at risk or they don't want to control their Dog and think owning one makes them tough or cool. |

i have to put my opinion here also. i do not agree with banning pitts, however i would like to see the further breeding of them become banned. unfortunately, without stereotyping, too many pitts are in the hands of shady people who abuse them and do not have the knowledge or the responsibility to care for them properly. they fall into the hands of tough guy want to be's and end up in fighting rings, on chains in back yards, and finally in the shelters where they are euthanized since the shelters do not attempt to rehome them. the buck has to stop somewhere and i think that if the breeding were to become illegal, eventually the breed would die out and the suffering and dangers would stop!!! |

Just as rotties and dobies where done in the mid 80s and early 90s, then pits took their place, and as the other poster said, there will be another breed, Corsos have already started to replace pits in my area.
I do believe the op ment bit rather than killed but it wouldnt be hard for one of our bigger small dogs to kill and infant. And not that it matters, but any large breed Dog can be just as harmful as a pit if the desire is there. I have had other breeds in here that had just as much prey drive as a bulldog and stubborness.
I loved my American Bulldogs but I will never own one again or any Dog that has that kind of drive. |

mao, this post is from 2005 so i doubt the poster will be answering your question.
The statement that you quoted may have some truth in it. i wouldn't be surprised. Every Dog has the ability to harm, injure or even kill a human child or adult. I don't think that quote neccesarily mean its common but its a possibility.
Another thing is that i understand pit bulls have a innate ability to be aggressive towards other animals but so does a lot of other breeds. IMO it has a lot to do with poor breeding and poor training/socialization. I don't believe its the breeds fault. If we were to banned a breed because of its aggressive nature than we should band any Dog that has a high prey drive. I find it amusing that someone will go up to a GSD without thinking twice but when it comes to a pit bull they are hesitant. I'm not saying GSD are aggressive dogs i just think everyone should take caution when they are confronted with other people's pets. I know this too well since i walk my Dog on a regular basis and about 80% of dogs i've seen around my neighborhood are poorly trained, very aggressive dogs of all breeds and most of the residents living here are usually high class, retired elderly folks.

i have to disagree with you on this one. I know there are some states that are getting fed up with the overpopulation of pets due to finanacial loss (banning hobby breeders, spay/neuter laws) but i don't think this is the solution. if anything i think it will cause more harm than good.
If we were to ban breeding of pit bulls it will only cause more poorly bred pit bulls to be bred. Breeders will take it underground and if thats the case many won't get proper vet care and registration. Not only that but many breeders will be cashing in MORE money if pit bull were considered "rare' and highly illegal. |

I missed that one. Thanks for the heads up. To bad though, I've heard this statement tossed out before only I can't find the data to support it. Which is not to say it doesn't happen just I'd like to see some hard numbers on it.

i've tried looking online for anything that would support it but haven't really found much.
'97-98 study of human fatalities from Dog attacks http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/duip/dogbreeds.pdf gives you a list if you scroll down and seems to be the only reputable source i found. It does say pitbull type, which may include all bully breeds.
I have seen this quoted several times in other websites: "The Washington Animal Foundation did a survey on human fatalities by dogs in 2001 and came up with these figures, Rottweiler (6); Labrador (2); Pomeranian (1); German Shepherd (2); Chow (1); Wolf-Hybrid (1); Akita (1); Doberman (1); Beagle (1); Presa Canario (2); Pit Bull (1); mixed breeds (6). When comparing these figures with the human fatalities from 1975-80 by Pickney & Kennedy, Traumatic Deaths from Dog Attacks in the United States, the report identified the following as responsible for human fatalities during the study period from May, 1975 to April, 1980: German Shepherd (16); Husky (9); St. Bernard (8); Bull Terrier (6); Great Dane (6); Malamute(5); Golden Retriever (3); Boxer (2); Dachshund (2); Doberman Pinscher (2); Collie (2); Rottweiler(1); Basenji (1); Chow-Chow (1); Labrador Retriever (1); Yorkshire Terrier (1); mixed and unknown breeds (15)." http://www.understand-a-bull.com/PitbullInformatio...

I did find the study but didn't find a free version: Pinckney LE, Kennedy LA. Traumatic deaths from dog attacks in the United States. Pediatrics. 1982;69l:193196.
So i can't say whether or not if that quote above is true.
This article seems to be a really good one about the factors of what is considered an aggressive dog.
http://www.mercer.edu/psychology/Faculty_Staff/Wri...
Talks about different factors that may affect a dog's aggression and also how some studies/statistics can be inconclusive due to these factors.
