First of all, since you are inexperienced in Dog owning, (i'm assuming) you need to contact a proffesional Dog trainer in your area to help with your dog's agression problem. Growling and biting are NOT acceptable.
I have never heard of an Irish Staff--I'll look around and try to pull something up for you though. By staff, do you mean Staffordshire terrier? If your Dog is part boxer, then I'm not suprised he is trying to dominate you. Boxers are usually exuberant, friendly dogs with tons of energy, but if they think they can get the better of you they will definitly try and it can get dangerous. You need to offer leadership to your dog--do not let him get away with even the tiniest things. (YOU go through the doorways first, he is not allowed in the bedroom, the furniture, etc. I'd also suggest a Gentle Leader) I highly suggest a proffesional Trainer to help you out. |

You really need to find a Pitt breeder in your area and go pick their brain! Your Dog may very well have fighting lines in it. If that IS the case then you're in for a VERY hard time ahead!
I agree that a trainer would be VERY beneficial to you. At the very least find someone who DOES know the breed and can show you what's up and how to handle them. People who are used to submissive breeds will be of NO use to you. Bully type breeds (Pitts, Boxers, Am. Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, etc..) must be taught from day one that YOU and your family are boss. They WILL rule over you and once they do you are in TROUBLE!
On a side note: If your Dog LOOKS like a Pitt and you own a house BEWARE! Many companies now are not insuring houses with Pitts! That is one reason that I do not own one. Yes you can hide them BUT if something happens and you have to file a claim then you're in deep doo doo! Just thought I'd warn you. |

He does look similar but a lot longer legs and not as stocky. I will post a pic soon.We believe him to be at least part staffordshire bull terrior. his face is very staff like but his body is just like a boxer- he is very excitable and does have all the traits of a Boxer as you say. We got him from a shelter who said he was a very calm well behaved dog- not quite 100% true. they could not be very clear on the breed as they had not been told. He is our first Dog and we did go to 2 terms of Dog training, which really helped but I dont think we were doing enough home training to reinforce it. I have been training for between 15- 30 mins every day now - more at the weekends. doing play and stop, recalls etc which have helped- I think its more owner than Dog problem. we have been stuffing kongs and giving him chews as I think he is very clever and gets bored easily. If he has started to growl/bite we have a clear loud NO command and seperate him for twenty mins which seems to be working wonders. we do walk him on a gentle leader which stops him from pulling but he hates it. thanks for all your input though, as it is very interesting to find out about these things and as a novice i appreciate the help. |
