I had a beautiful Pomeranian She was a champion and doing very well with agility. I had been giving her greenies for the past 7 - 8 months with no adverse results. Last Thursday I gave her a greenie (petite size) I Found her on the carpet at 745 not moving but still warm I tried sucking on her snout and mouth and the heimlich procedure with no success. I rushed her to the dog traning facility hoping that one of the more knowledgeable people could help but it was too late.. The next day our vet performed an autopsy and found a wad of greenie in her esophagous. She had choked to death very quickly. My message to all of you is to beware of this product. gright1

i am very sorry for your loss. i have heard many stories of people whose pets have died as a result of the greenies becoming lodged either in the throat like your dog or in the intestines. there are quite a few posts on another forum i grequent about this. all of you should gather and put in a claim against the company.

same thing can happen with rawhide, and pig ears. they break off in tiny chunks and can get stuck in the intestines. if you're going to feed your dog rawhide, I'd go with compressed rawhide.

I am so sorry, that is so sad. I stopped giving my dogs rawhides bcuz I was worried about that happening. I have never given greenies, but now I never will.

I am extremely sorry for your loss. I have heard horror stories about rawhides and hard chewies killing dogs before and it really is sad. Since reading the stories I have not given my dogs rawhides or any hard chewies. I now only give them soft treats or a treat in their kong to keep them occupied rather than a rawhide. It's pitiful how some things happen...

I read a posting regarding this on another forum and one of the replies said that you should ALWAYS supervise when givng your dog Greenies. We don't have Greenies here, but we do have rawhide and I don't let Miellie chew them if I'm not around. If I leave I put them away and give it back to her when I can watch. I am sceptical about them but Miellie really seems to like them. I am very sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have never bought greenies but I used to buy rawhides. When I would take my dog to the vet when he wasn't feeling well he always warned me about giving him rawhides. He said it can lay in their stomach and intestines since it is so hard to digest.

Sorry you had to go through such an ordeal btw, are greenies those green, hard things that are shaped sort of like fat toothbrushes?

I'm so very sorry for your loss. tigger - what is a "compressed" rawhide? I've never heard of that.

I've never bought greenies because I thought they looked grosse. I still to this day really don't know what they are made of or what's they're purpose. As a rule of thumb when I'm buying things for my pooch weather it's toys or treats, I think to myself if it doesn't look appealing or appetizing to me then he won't like it either. I'm so sorry for you loss, it's such a tragedy to hear about these things especially about such a beloved animal.

I'm so sorry, that's horrible. I have never and will never give my dogs Greenies or recommend them to others because this story is only one of many that I have heard over the years. When Greenies were first coming out I knew someone who's Chihuahua almost choked to death on a sharded piece of Greenie. There are many other Greenie horror stories out there Online that you can find by doing a search for more information. May your baby rest in peace...

I swear. Greenies are like crack for dogs. They LOVE them. It's sad how many losses this could potentially cause!

I'm so sorry--that is awful. I also have my doubts about chewies, rawhides, and similar products. Your pom sounded like a wonderful dog. I have know idea what I would do in a situation like that--you must have been devastated.

I am so sorry for your loss. That is absolutely terrible and so very sad. I just recently got very picky about treats after hearing a lot of horror stories. I have 2 puppies that are almost 16 weeks old and have never had a treat yet. I hope your pain lessens with each new day and that your memory is full of happy times with your baby. I feel so bad for you.

I am sorry about your loss. I knew dogs could choke on bones and toys but never imagined that something like this could happen. I have only given my dogs greenies once, and they made a huge mess by chewing them up and spitting the pieces out all over the floor, so I didn't give them to them because of the mess they made with them. And I was upset thinking that my dogs were missing out on the nutrition aspect of the greenies. Thank you for having the courage to post and warn others about the risks involved with the product. Again, I am sorry for your loss.
