This is a thread for opinions on how many pets you believe is too many and how many you currently own as of now. There have been many debates on how many animals should be allowed and how many they believe to be in a "hoarding" situation so that is what this thread is for. |

I have 6 animals. I think the most you should have is ten, and we did have ten living in our house at one point. |

I have one Chihuahua and 3 birds just got a new bird today :)
But how much is too many? Too many is when you can't afford to feed your animals anymore and they become neglected. # doesn't matter. |

I also believe that you shouldn't be told how many animals you are allowed to keep. Unfortunately there are some cities that forbid you from having over 4. I'm not sure what the point is except protecting people from it getting out of hand and becoming a hoarding situation. I currently have 8 animals which people tell me is too many. I care for all of my animals properly and they are vetted as well. I don't see what the problem is at all. What's wrong with being an animal lover? |

If you can properly care and love and provide proper nutrition, medical exams and get the animals fixed so they aren't mulitpling like rats, you should be able to have as many pets as you can reasonably care for emotionally, physically and financially.
Some people can have dozens of pets and provide properly adequate care for them. Why stop them from doing a good job at something they love?
Lady in a 1 bedroom apt. had 83 live cats living in her unit, neighbors called animal control due tp the "rotting" smell coming through the walls. Animal control went in wearing full haz mat gear (there was so much amonia in the air that the air was toxic) and removed 83 live cats, sick, injured, kittens. There were cats living in the walls, dying in the walls, cats feeding on other dead cats, urine and feces ankle high. Too many cats? I think so. In rare cases this is a mental health issue with the horeder. They can't see that they are doing more harm than they are doing good for the animal. These people when identified should not be allowed pets and be monitored and visited regularly to see that they aren't at it again.
My father in law has a farm and has over 100 cows who are all healthy and well cared for. He also has a Dog who goes with him to take care of the cows, a horse he rides when he's with the cattle and a cat to eat the mice. This is his life and he enjoys every minute of it. Why put a limit on someone like him? |

The reason I posted this thread was because lately (during puppy and kitten season) I have seen many shows on how many is too many and animal hoarding. I am guilty of being an animal lover, what can I say? My pets are all well cared for and live in clean and sanitary conditions and so do we. Obviously I have the financial stability and physical stability to care for all of them and give them each individual attention. It upsets me when someone comes and says "Wow, that's too many" I honestly don't think that 8 animals (4 dogs, 3 cats, and a ferret) are all that many. We have a large fenced in back yard where they are allowed to roam and play, and the ferret also has free roam when supervised. None are emaciated, sick, matted, or stuck in a cage for 20 hours a day. I love animals, I take care of my animals, others do as well. I'm not sure why they pass certain laws about how many animals you can have if you have the ability to care for them all. |

with everyone else. But, I do say that if you aren't a breeder of those animals and just want a lot of pets, I would say that an average person of middle class can afford to take care of ten animals without skipping a month or two on anything that the animals would need. |

This is something that I think must be heavily considered among families, neighborhoods and legistlatures. I believe that the government should impose restrictions on the number of pets in one household for reasons such as 1. those people who go overboard and 2. for proper zoning usage. For people who live in Rural areas, the limit should be higher. I'm sure that some people are capable of maintaing happy healthy pets but for those very few who take advantage of no-limits, there should be limits in place because of that. I don't think it's being penalized for being an animal lover I think it's just providing everyone an equal opportunity and standard for all. I don't really have a number in place but as an example I don't think a person in a middle class neighborhood should have more than 4 large dogs. If there are more pets in the household that equal that weight of 4 large dogs more can be in the household ie (cats, birds, ferrets, hamsters, etc). |

did anyone see the hulk hogan show, "hogan knows best" last night? they recieved complaints from neighbors because they had 7 dogs, a rooster and a cockatoo.(not to mention a huuuuuge mansion that could hold 100 pets). the town then told them that they could only have 5 domestic animals.. they had to take 3 of their dogs to there lake house and leave them alone during the days until they were able to go to court and clear everything up. hulks wifey was in tears at the town hall yelling and screaming at the board because they just expected her to pick and chose which of her pets should stay and which should go... all in all.. they ended up taking the town to court and they won and were able to keep all the pets! thought that this story fit well with the topic. obviously the town they live in has a 5 pet limit but sometimes exceptions should be made.. especially when the resident has enough land and a big enough house to hold as many animals as their heart desires. |

I think a person should be able to own as many pets as they have room for and can care for properly and responsibly. 4 of my own dogs right now, and the foster is 5. I had nine cats (7 were kittens) at one point but I knew that was too many and reduced it to 2. They grew old and when I got my terrier three years ago they went to homes without dogs. I haven't had cats since. Horses, too. If people have the land, can care for, ride, and pay for horses properly then I think it's ok to have as many as you prefer, provided you have as much space as they will need. |

I must be doing something right! My animals have regular vet visits and are in great health! I say NO-LIMITS for responsible peaple!!!!!! Cindy: from MN. |

I'm sorry that I can not agree with people who think you have too many animal if they are all well cared for and properly maintained. Obviously you are able to give them the care and attention they need and support them financially, then I don't see how this can be viewed as too many. I do agree there are situations that warrent removal of animals due to the manner in which they are or are not cared for. It's so sad to see on the news when someone horeds animals in unsanitary wasteful living situations and you see sickly, starving animals trying to be nursed back to health. In situations like that it is apparent that an intervention is definately needed for the health, safety and well being of the animal, not to mention the person who has horeded the animals needs to have some sort of assessment looking into the cause of their problem. |

I have 4 pit bull terriers and 1 scottish terrier, we also have some fish. I think that people should be able to have as many as they can care for properly. |

I saw that episode of Hogan Knows Best. I couldn't believe that the gardener of all people that didn't even live on the street was complaining about their animals. He doesn't live there and he's complaining about them? That just blew me away. Also, in certain situations there should be restrictions for people due to the amount of living space, and things like that but when the animal is well cared for, has space to roam and play, has a comfortable area for himself then why should there be such a limit? There shouldn't right? I'm not sure but I definitely know people that have more animals than we do in a same size or smaller living area. We could get the number of animals down but the animals in my name are 5. 2 dogs, one cat, and the ferret. |

Depending on where they live, I think they can have as many as they want as long as they can take care of them. I currently have 1 Dog and 1 rabbit. My cat passed away last year :( |
