Our 12 week old Ausi will not stop digging up chunks of grass adn eating the dirt and grass. We have just had a sewer connection put in our yard and are trying to grow the grass but he keeps digging up arts and eating it all. When you try to get it away it always becomes a game unless you show him a food treat. Any suggestions? |

The reason your Dog may eat grass is becuase he is trying to make himself throw-up.Maybe he has an upset stomach. Or he might just like the taste. That's good he stops eating grass for a treat! Maybe replace the treat with something you always carry around that he will like. That way if your in the yard and you see him eat the grass, you can "bait" him away from the grass and make him drop the clump then say "sit" and give him his much deserved treat. |

I don't know about your breed, but Dobermans graze as if they were cows in a former life. It does not seem to have anything to do with an upset stomach, and does not make them throw up - it just makes their poo look more like manure because of all the grass in it - LOL!
I think it just depends on the dog. |

Some dogs likely eat grass because they simply like the taste, others may do it to provide further bulk to their diet should they perceive this to be lacking, and still others likely eat grass to try and settle or clear an upset stomach. If your pet is on a good quality diet, has regular stools, and isn't showing other health concerns, grass-eating is unlikely to be a problem. You may want to try and curtail the behaviour to avoid it from becoming a problem by keeping your lawn cut short and free of grass clippings and leaves and providing your Dog with an outdoor toy that it can occupy its mouth with.
Thouht that might help! |

LOL I HAD to laugh along with my husband on this one! Our Aussie does this too, I always say she's a cow in an Aussie body! She's 6 months old sooo hang in there? lol She doesn't have an upset belly either, she just appears to LOVE the taste! Can't stop her for the life of us. Pretty much gave up on that. We just make sure her diet isn't lacking anything (someone told me putting greens in their diet would cure this, nope I put broccoli in her food and she still does this. I still put in in there in the morning tho for nutrition reasons.) so that's not it! She's never puked either.
My suggestion? Either keep her away from it oorr try and look the other way. Mine just eats the tops, not the dirt tho. Maybe this helped??? |

Thanks everyone. He does not have a sore tummy and his stools are fine. Our German Shepard X does this as well and she is fine also.
Maybe he is a cow in a Ausi body. HA HA. I will check with our trainer next week and see if she has any suggestions. We do have toys etc out there for him and have tried the bait trick - doesn't work so far he seems to think it is a game and really won't give it up. I really wouldn't care too much but we are trying to grow the grass in this particular section so the top layer is loose due to the sewer construction. Mind you there really isn't much grass left cause he ate what was there and no new grass wants to grow when it gets dug up at least twice a day. I even tried spraying the area with the pet be gone stuff. That works for a bit but then the auto sprinklers come on and it goes bye bye.

My Aussie mix did this last week. He's been laid up in his crate for the past month (ACL surgery) and he finally got to start exercising last week. I took him out to pee and poop, and when he was done he didn't want to leave and go back inside. So he started eating grass that was growing by the fence. I, of course, didn't know if he was doing it because he had an upset tummy or not, but he probably did it because he hadn't seen/smelt/ate grass in over a month and couldn't help but chew. Or maybe he really was just trying to stall, not wanting to go back inside, lol
He's on a good food, has a good coat and good poops, so I know it's not a nutrient deficiency, and he doesn't normally eat grass. |

All dogs eat grass. It provides them with nutrition and they clean out their system this way. It doesnt always mean they have an upset stomach. Ask a vet, he will tell you the same |

I have Chinese Crested, and I take them out for walks and my little one will try to at grass and I will tell him to stop and he will. (the grass makes him vomit). He is funny though, as we are walking along he will sneak a mounth full of grass. Then a few feet later he will sneak another mouth full of grass. Then he will bring it in the house (because he never chewed it or ate it while we were outside) and he hides it hiding the couch. Why we don't know, but he has always done this, he saves it for later and then he eats it when I am not watching him. |

In my "Westies from head to tail" book the author explains that dogs just want some roughage on occasion and to give your Dog shredded cabbage whenever you see them eating grass. |

I would attempt to deter your baby or babies from this habit and instead go to your local pet retailer like PetsMart or Petco and buy what's called pet grass. It's wheat grass, is all natural and is sure not to have any harmful larvae or pestisides living on or in it. you never know what could be living on that grass outdoors. dogs often get tapeworms from eating flea larvae from grass, so please beware. |

I too have an Aussie that is a little over a year old and he never passes up an opportunity to eat grass when he's outside. I was a little concerned that something might be wrong but was releived to see that many other dogs are grazers as well. |

shepsmom - I'm having the exact same problem with my 6 month old lab, he's pretty much done it from when we got him at 7 weeks old. We've tried poop in the holes and it works until the poop dries up. We've found nothing to help, and no one seems to have an answer online. I don't think my pup does it b/c he wants to eat the grass, I think it's more prize envy b/c my husband and I react to him. If you find a way to make them stop, please let me know! We have a fenced in yard and I hate putting him on the leash to go out and play, but I just can't trust that he won't rip up our entire yard. Frustrated. |
