Poop stinks, yes, but there's different levels of stink IMHO. I've smelled poop that just plain old smells and I've smelled poop that, quite frankly, I wouldn't want to be within several feet of once it's been deposited. |

It goes to show ya that you should just buy some cornmeal and make your own doggie food... it would be more cost effective. Heck just throw your Dog a corncob everyday... |

No one's saying you have to feed your Dog fresh roadkill. We're saying switch from a low or middle quality foor that lists corn or by-product as the first ingredient to one that uses actual meat as the first ingredient. That's what we're saying.
Dogs NEED protein. Corn ISN'T a good source of protein and neither is by-product. When it says beaks and claws as part of chicken by-product do you really think that's a good source of protein over a food that lists actual chicken as the first ingredient and uses nice chunks of chicken breast in the food? If so, you have a poor outlook on nutriition for pets and that's okay, you're perfectly in your rights to have it, but again, if you're not serious about better nutrition STOP posting to this thread and [other] nutrition threads. Let us educate others who want to be educated about better pet nutrition. Why put a damper on their education, huh? |

Quote Kayzhond: Someone here is actually feeding their Dog Beneful. Sorry, Beneful by Purina is "junk" food.
The main ingredients are ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal. Do you know what... |
Purina is not that bad,Purina makes Pro-plan. I personally don't like Iams or euk, there base product is beef, and I'd rather my dogs eat chicken or lamb(I feed pro-plan to my dogs and cats).I've never had any problems and there skin and coats are wonderful. |

Quote Kayzhond: I wouldn't eat Beneful period. However,I'd be more inclined to actually eat the Solid Gold if I did wind up having to eat Dog and cat food.
That's fine if you want to think I have way too much time... |
Kayz I know in the past I've attacked you, and I'm sorry. I recently had to switch my puppy(four month old Yorkie) from Nutro because he was getting dry skin to Royal Canin Puppy 33. which for everyones information costs $7.49 for a 3 pound bag. I've had the same bag now for, I want to say, two weeks. it might be more. not sure. but for a 15 pound bag it is a little over $25 . It's made tiggers skin so much better and his coat feels and looks so much better. I know it's not the top, but I haven't been able to find any of the "premium" foods that y'all bring up.
I personally would never eat ANY Dog food, premium or not. so I do think it's unfair to ask people if they would eat their dogs "junk" food.
Yes a lot of the foods y'all are bringing up can and by many are considered "junk" food. But I say you feed what you can afford and if your Dog is certified Healthy and you haven't had any problems with it, then more power to you. But if you can afford premium food, I highly suggest switching over. I guarantee you will see MAJOR results. whether it be immediate or over an extended amount of time, you will see better results. I know because I use premium food. My Baby poops less (once or twice a day) its more compact, and does not smell nearly as bad. also his coat is shinier and his skin is healing nicely. But like I said, it's generally up to you, but if you do have your dogs best in mind and if you can afford it, I recommend switching.
You won't go through as many bags of food, and your Dog will eat less because they're taking in more nutrients and keeping them in rather then pooping them out. |

Well my brother did by a bag of Nutro Natural Choice. Only one bag but he says he might switch from Ol Roy to Diamond. Is Diamond better? Also I noticed the 1st ingredient in the Nutro is Lamb Meal. Can any one tell me what it is. I have heard different ideas of what it is. |

I just had to buy a bag of Chicken Soup for the puppy Lovers soul because my regular puppy food was out. My dogs seem to love it and I'm very happy with the ingredients. I am a firm believer that good food makes all the difference! (I don't want no darn controversy either!) |

Lamb Meal is the dry rendered (cooked down) product from lamb tissues, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices.
Lamb meal is simply lamb meat with the moisture removed, making it suitable for use in dry food.
if you go any search engine and type: aafco definition of Lamb Meal it should bring up some good options.
Hope this helps. |

Well, I just wanna clarify a couple things first: I have a cell phone, it is my main phone as I do not have a landline; I use the internet at work, I do not have it at home; AND I do not have cable, cause I very rarely watch more than the news. But I am still not sure I can pay tons of money for Dog food. Instead of bashing me, and telling me how horrible I am, why doesn't someone reccomend a good dry kibble, and a good wet food for my new puppy. One that meets nutrition standards, but won't break the bank too badly... |

What stores do you have locally to you, small mom and pop shops? Walmart, Petco, Petsmart?
If you can tell me what you have I can help you further. ^_^ |

We do have a petco, they have a huge variety of foods. Right now I am getting the puppy tomorrow, and I have a small bag of purina puppy chow, which I did notice the main ingredient was corn meal or whatever it is called. What should I get instead? Also my breder said that my puppy doesn't really like dry food that much yet, but I should try to feed him both till he starts to like it better, so could you reccomend a goot wet and dry food for me? |

You will need to check out small pet stores or feed stores to price various foods. The prices vary from state to state..or even store to store.. Tiggerlove said she buys Royal Canin for 7 bux a 3lb. bag.. I can get Innova EVO for 5 bux a 3lb. bag. Royal canin is an OK food, but IMO Innova EVO is better. |

Ok, I would recommend checking out this simple list I made first. It's has random Dog foods on it, they are all better then grocery store brands, some are better then others. The links bring you to the food manufactuors official website. On that website you can look around for a way to locate a local retailer or store near to you. Call around to those stores ask for specific lines of food and how much they charge (random stores will not sell for the same cost.)
http://angel.pwnd.org/dog/dogfoodwebsitelist.htm
Some good ones from this list include, but not limited to... Artemis Blue Buffalo (found at Petsmart) by Nature California Natural Canidae C&P Chicken Soup Evolve Fromm Flint River Ranch Innova Merrick Pinnacle Solid Gold TimberWolf Wellness
As far as Petco goes, you have some options, some foods are better then others check if you have these brands at Petco.
- Natural Balance - Nutro Natural ULTRA - Eagle Pack - Sensible Choice Natural Blend - Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul
As far as what to feed, kibble or canned, while canned is better, because of a higher meat content. It really depends on your indivdual dog. So feed accordingly. |

Ok, thanks, I have another question though (I am just full of them! ) My boyfriend's grandmother fed her Dog Bil Jac, is this a good brand? I never got to look at the ingredients list, but she recommends it... Anyone here ever used this? |

I have to agree with you there. My sister tasted Iams once, gagged (I thought she was going to vomit), and now I'm to scared to sample Solid Gold.
But hey, you know what we doggie lovers can eat? Charlie Bears! You can get'm at any pet store(i think), but they're perfectly edible! (To people as well dogs ) |

I've tasted both Dog food and cat food. It's not all that bad. It all depends on the brand it is. Kibbles n Bits was probably the best tasting Dog food. I know that sounds strange As for cat food, most of it tastes the same. Fishy. I like to taste my pets food before giving it to them. Call me crazy, I call myself curious lol. |
