My male one-year-old Pug is still peeing indoors. I have an 11-yr-old German Shepard who always waits to go outside and who knows how to ask to be walked and should be demonstrating good habits. The Pug gets walked (30minutes plus) three times a day and is let out in the yard on his leash for long periods of time (he adores playing in grass). However, he still pees indoors and I dispair of teaching him differently. Since I'm used to my larger dog, I wondered if perhaps the Pug's bladder simply isn't big enough for him to wait throughout an 8hour work day to do his pee. It has been suggested that I try using a pee pad while I'm away during the day.
He does know enough to run to the back door when he wants to pee, but it takes me a minute to notice and by then it's too late. I don't know how to teach him to bark at the back door, so I hung a bell from the knob and rang it every time I let him out, trying to tach him that bell means out. But he's only once rang the bell, and I think it might have just been an accident. I thought that our larger Dog might learn to ask for the little one, but it's not turning out that way and I have no idea how to teach her to do so.
I have little experience with small dogs, only what I researched before I got him. I'm hoping someone out there will have some advice. |

A Dog at any age can be crate trained, it just might take a little longer for them if they are already an adult, not to mention how time consuming, especially if you work all day. I myself am not diligent enough so I leave out puppy pads in 2 spots in the house!
My question is...
Is it just a little tinkle or is he letting it all out? Both of my little dogs, a female and a male, leak a little when they are excited or we just came home. So I grab them up as quick as I can, and then take them out and let them finish their work!!
Is he in a crate when you come home from work? If he is, do not go to him immediately to let him out. Give him just a few minutes while you are talking to him and reassuring him. Then, do not let him walk out by himself, pick him up, I craddle mine like a baby and rush him outside. Giving him a few minutes to calm down before you take him out COULD help with the control issue.
As for when you are home, I keep my Chi who is not yet potty trained on a leash right with me at all times. When I see any signs, like he wants to go to the back door, or sniffing I take him out RIGHT AWAY |

One more idea!!
A doggie door works wonders. If it's the one you have to cut a hole for or put in your sliding glass door if you have one, then you won't have to worry about a bell. Even if you get one that is only big enough for him your big Dog already knows the drill. The sliding door ones can be spendy so if you have a recycling center in your area where people can bring in household items, I found my doggie door there, before I went out and spent the money on the nice one.
If you get either door, just tape up the flap for a few days until you see him going in and out on his own and then you should be able to put the flap back down.
I hope if you try any of these that this helps!!! GOOD LUCK |

Lazer, the Pug, is never in a crate. When no one is home, I assume the two dogs play or sleep or eat, whatever. Lazer actually has this weird habit of dragging shoes all over the house, he doesn't chew them, just carries them around.
He doesn't tinkle when he gets excited, a neighbour's Dog did, so I know what you're talking about.
When he does pee, I don't think it's a bladder full, it's only a tiny puddle, maybe 3 inches diameter. (Though, is that a bladder full for a Pug? I'm just going by a relative comparision with the larger dog.)
We have put a little doggie door in the screen in the back door, he does use it. However, come wintertime, that won't be an option.
I think, from your suggestions, that maybe the pee pads are the best idea. If I can make sure he knows to ask to go out when I'm home (like with the keeping him leashed to me idea), then I'll be satisfied, so long as he learns to pee only on the pad when I'm not home, I can deal with that. |

Hi again, If you are going to use pee pads I suggest you put a few of them out at a time. I have one in each bathroom and one in the kitchen. As soon as our Chi goes on if 2 times, I change it out because after that he won't use it. He will pee on it but usually does number 2 somewhere else so you might want to be prepared for that. I also bought ours a "pee post". It's a yellow stake that smells that you tap into the ground where you want them to go. It works easier with males because they might want to mark it. You can get it at Petsmart for less than $10. I thought it was a cheap try and if it worked, wonderful, if it didn't, not a huge loss.
If yours is loose in the house while you are gone the whole time, do you have a urine remover spray? Are you checking for any accidents when you get home to take care of it right away? He might be remarking those spots if you aren't aware of them!!
GOOD LUCK! |

You have two males in the same house, my guess is the Pugs peeing is more of a "this is my house" than anything else. Pee Pads may work but if they don't look on-line for a belly band. They work well. |

Just as an update, the pee pads worked, almost too well. My Pug took to them very easily and if he is out on the deck, he'll even rush into the house via the doggie door to use the pad rather than do it on the deck. I only place them in one place in the house since my dogs generally stay on the one floor if no one is up or downstairs. I heartily suggest for any owners out there with my problem to try the pads. What is even better, is that I have a friend at a hospital who said that the pee pads are very much the same as the pads hospitals use when changing adult diapers. Those pads are much cheaper and the Dog uses them just the same.
Thanks for all your help! |

Glad the pee pads worked out for you. My pug is almost two and has been trained sice he was about 8 months olds. it was never pee that had a problem with, it was more on the poo side -lol! My pug has no problem holding it in throughout the night and while we are at work so i dont think its the small bladder thats necessary the problem maybe its just a territory thing or maybe he doesnt really understand that he shouldnt go in the house. Anyway, at least youv found something that works, maybe when hes a bit older he'l grow out of it. Good luck ps pugs are great! |

Many similarities to my dogs I have now and in the past. I used to have a Dog who would pee out of excitement, that was terrible and i think a different subject. Maybe the 8 hours are to long, our pug right now is almost two and has made it 8 hours but there are so many things that could be different, including water intake. Also, my pug is almost 30 lbs, hes a husky boy. He does the shoe thing, too actually. never chews, just grabs them and leaves them around the living room. One problem we had with puppy pads, Reggie would rip them apart. Now, I dont know if your Dog will, but reggie is a Dog that if he gets a paper he shreds it so the puppy pads were almost worthless. Good luck though, pugs are known to take a WHILE to house train so don't feel that bad about it, just keep trying |

I have an odd question but my Dog will be 1 next month and he's been both litter box trained but tends to stick with pee pads more, and the problem i'm having is he will NEVER go do his buissness outside at all. We don't have a backyard and live in apartments on the 4 floor with no elevators so it's easier to have him trained using pee pads while we're away and can't take him out but even when we do take him out like 15-20 min after eating drinking he just wont potty or poo outside even if he smells it from another dog. Is there any way at all I can train him that it's ok to go outside too?
PS: we did already try using his own scent and feces. |

hello!
i have 2 pugs, and i found that food is there #1 motivator!! when u let the pug outside and he goes, say good Dog and give a treat as soon as he is done! do this for one week and you will see a difference. after a few months you wont even need the treat and he will go as usual. i can assure you that Dog will wait all day just for its treat!! |
