Hello! Our 13 week old German Shepherd puppy a male and 35 pounds bites alot when he play with you! is this normal? How can i discourage it other than tell him "Wrong Ranger!". Will he probabely out grown it with continued verbal "Wrong Ranger"??? His teeth are getting sharp and his bite is geting harder. He's loveable and just wants to play but his size and with a family around it's not funny at all anymore. Please email soon. I need advice! Thanks!!!

Unfortunately puppies DO bite when they're playing. They're not trying to be mean, just that they're cutting teeth and feeling everything with their mouth. What works well for us is to take their upper lip (this doesn't work with all breeds, only if their upper lip is big enough) and pull it over their teeth when they bite you. This way they're biting themselves and start realizing that it HURTS! OR you can hold their mouth shut and tell them no bite. OR (this one we always do anyway, regardless if we do the others or not)you can grab a toy and put it in their mouth instead of YOU! lol This tells them that it's okay to chew this but not your hand, food, arm...whatever it is! lol Good luck with your pup! They're just TOO much fun aren't they???

If your going to use your dogs name when giving a correction then you need to use it first. Ranger "NO Bite" You need to give your dog other things to chew on besides your hands. When he starts biteing give him the Ranger "NO Bite" command and then give him a toy. When he starts to chew on the toy tell him what a good boy he is. No, he will not out grow this. Training is key. You need to get him in puppy classes. These dogs do not grow up to be the wonderful loving and loyal pets that everyone wants on their own. If not trained properly they will become borred, distructive and mean. Start teaching your dog sit, down, stay, fetch right away. One new thing a week. A [uppy class will help teach you how to teach your dog.

I totally agree with the earlier posts but also want to remind you that your dog is a herding breed and is therefore more likely to use his mouth incorrectly and you need to set these boundaries for him as soon as possible. Do find a good trainer and go to classes, and follow the excellent advice given in the 2 previous posts.
