Ugh...I'm super nervous. I was told by a groomer at PetSmart to never cut down a toy Pom's hair. The coat will not grow back the same, it will be uneven and matted, etc. My dad did me a favor this morning and dropped the Dog off for her hair cut. The groomer (not the one that I had talked to before) asked what he wanted and he said "I don't know. A hair cut." My Dog is a regular there and has always come back with the same long hair/feathered hair cut. My dad wasn't aware of what it was called..he assumed it was just the hair cut they do. The groomer says "ok...we'll give her a puppy cut. We do that a lot here in the summer". She got back from the groomer and oh my god...her hair is SUPER SHORT. Like maybe an inch long. Is this puppy cut normal? Will her hair grow back like it's supposed to? I called back the groomer and she said that there is no guarentee that her hair will grow back normal...but it should since it's her first time. She said it might come back in uneven, too thick/too thin, etc. She never told my dad this when he dropped her off or he wouldn't of done it. I'm so worried that they just ruined her fur. My Dog is two years old..are these puppy cuts normal? Will her hair grow back normal? Is it going to be matted? What do I do?

Well. Sorry to sound disrespctful but why would you give a two year old a puppy hair cut? But your dog's hair will grow back. Eventually

LAKID, many people give their two year old (and older) dogs puppy cuts.

As for the dogs hair growing back...it is not recommended to cut or shave a pom for the very reason stated by the OP as where with other breeds shaving and cutting will have no long term or adverse effect on the coat.

anyone passing themselves off as a "groomer" should know that & the store should also have some responsiblity. I would also talk to an attorney - even tho the problem can't be corrected

I would never take a pet to any of those stores for anything, especially classes, but they sure can offer some reimbursement

I thought poms weren't supposed to have their fur shaved because their coat protects them from the sun.
Anyways, your Poms hair will grown back, as mentioned before 'eventually'. It will take a very very very long time.

I've never had a pom (though have seen them with a puppy cut), but growing up, I had pug that my parents would have shaved. Honestly, I think they were just being selfish and not wanting to deal with his shedding. You're REALLY not supposed to shave a pug. For him, his hair was never as soft as it had been, and I don't think they let it grow long. My poor pug was blind and shaved...I wasn't old enough to really speak up for him. But then again, pug's hair is different than pom's...so I guess you'll find out.

I can't imagine the shock you had when you saw your pom! They look soooo different when they are cut short.

Sadly, anyone with a pair of shear or clippers can call themselves a "groomer". A puppy cut means the hair around the feet are trimmed, the crotch area is shaved and the rear end is tidied up so as not to catch any "clingons".( See ANY Poodle grooming book) A short haircut is called stripping the coat. Your pom, and most double coated breeds, should never be stripped because they will sunburn. The coat will rarely grow back the way it should on a pom. The sun damages the roots of the hair at skin level and the coat just doesn't return.I would definitely get a Poodle grooming book and use that as evidence when you go to the "groomer" to gt some recourse. I would also keep any vet bills related to skin conditions your Dog is more than likely to develope. If you have a pic of yuor Dog before the grooming and get a pic of after the grooming it will also be useful as evidence.
I am the first one to want to scream when the government wants to regulate/ license and industry because there is so much politics that goes on. However, I am beginning to think it is time for something to happen to the grooming industry. Some shops use dish soap on your pet. It cuts the oil in the coat and leaves a fresh scent. Hoever, it also dries the skin so they use cheap creme rinses to cover the damage done to the coat by the dish soap. The big retailer P---m--- does this and charges for a "Medicated" bath wehen they groom many a dog. Just ask to see the shampoos. If it is NOT a natural product like Kelco or nature's choice or one otf the others, take your pet elsewhere.Good uck on your pom
