Hi Everyone Im a new puppy owner..this is the first puppy I have every had, I have always had cats before, so Im not real sure what Im doin with this pup. Im hoping someone can help me out a bit with potty training. I have had her for about 4 weeks and she is still having accidents in the house...she will go outside for a hour and then comes in and pees in my floor. She has not yet figured out she needs to tell me she needs to go out too. I try not to yell at her but it is hard sometimes(cause it make me crazy!! ). I just dont know what to do or maybe Im expecting too much from her and it will just take some more time????? Any advice would be great!! Donna |

How old is your new pup? They are like a kid and need time to figure the housebreaking thing out. First, buy a Dog crate. When you can't watch her in the house, put her in the crate. Before you go to bed at night and first thing in the morning take her out and GO OUT WITH HER so when she does her thing outside you can praise her. Don't leave her in the crate for more than a few hours if you can help it. The more time with you the beter. If she soils the vrate, just clean it up. You can actually frighten some breeds like cockers into becoming a submissive peer. Every time a sp Dog comes near you, it pees. If you yell at it you are causing the problem to worsten. I have housetrained dogs of all ages with the crate and it has always worked well for me. Good luck. |

I find a crate works wonderful. Take the puppy out about 10=15 minutes after eating, right after a nap or after being in the crate. I take mine out about every hour during the day. The thing about house training, is YOU learning your dog's habits. After having mine a couple of weeks I know he poo's 3 times a day about 1 1/2 hours after eating and he pees just about every time I take him out. Past dogs I've owned have been about 4 months old when finally they get it. |

depending on how old she is you shouldn't ecpect too much right away.what kind of Dog is she? i think the smaller breed of dogs have smaller bladders so she will have to be taken out more often.while she is still learning it's not up to her to tell you ,it's up to you to pick up on her and the things she's doing.look for her sniffing around, maybe whining things like that.if she has an accident in the house don't spank her or rub her nose in it.that will just make her go and hide when she does her thing.if she does have an accident it's usually your fault not hers.when you take her out try and take her to the same spot as much as you can.make it clear to her that it's potty time, not play time.and when she does go potty, make her think that whAt she just did is the greatest thing since sliced bread.and as the above poster said take her out when she wakes up and about 20min or so after she eats.she'll get the message .good luck |

Thanks everyone
She is 12 weeks old and she is a apple jack.
I do have a crate for her and she stays in it when Im at work and at nite..but she pees in there too and on her bed I have paper and a blanket in there but see seems to like to go on her bed not the paper. I dont spank her or rub her nose in it when I catch her I tell her no and pick her up and take her outside and tell her to potty outside. She will not poo in her crate she just pees. I do have to leave her in the crate all day while im at work so I dont know if that is part of the problem. We did really good last nite and we had no accidents in the house.
I also was wonder would it be bad to let her go on paper...by the back door where she goes out..so if its rainy snowy or I just dont notice???? Thanks again for all your help |

is it possible at all for you to have someone come in and let her out once or twice?that would help alot i have not heard of too many 12 wk Puppies that were able to hold it for that long.but if your doing the best you can and you seem to be making progress keep going with what you are.as far as the paper by the door i wouldn't reccomend that.she will get used to going there and not want to go outside.you have to watch her and pick up on when she needs to go out. |

at 12 weeks, she should be getting at least 3 meals a day. if she doesn't eat often enough her glucose levels can drop & cause seizures.
generally it is 4 - 5 months before you start seeing results from the housebreaking. some dogs a year.
unfortunately she is learning to go in her crate because she has no choice. that does make it much harder to break them |

We always used the crate for house breaking...however with our boxers, we found that not letting them have total run of the house worked best..when they were babies, we would tie them up on a leash to a chair or a table leg and take them out side every so often, but I was home with them all day, so did not have to worry about leaving them tied up...when we were gone we would put them out in the yard. We only had to do this with them for 2 weeks and after that they did not have accidents in the house any more. I guess they just didn't like being tied up in the house...Hope every thing worked out for you. |
