Ok, my 2.5 year old male, neutered french bulldog has UTIs all the time. He never shows any symptoms, but we have him checked about every 4 months since he seems to be so prone to them and more often than not the results come back positive. The vet cytology has never shown any evidence of crystals and so the best explanation the vet has been able to give us is, "some dogs just get them all the time".
Well, I am wondering if there is something I can do or some sort of supplement I can include in his diet to help. I can't help but to think the vet is perfectly happy making this money off of us, $30 for the urine cytology, which I collect the urine myself and drop it off, and another $25 for the antibiotics.
I have heard that cranberry extract pills can be helpful and was wondering if anybody has used them or if anyone out there has any other ideas?
Please help I would really like to permanently or somewhat permanently fix the problem so he doesn't have to keep going through this because while he shows no symptoms of UTI I can't imagine that he is comfortable. |

Have you talked to his breeder? UTI's are common in Frenchies and English Bulldogs. My guess is this is a combo of genetic and possiably an allergy. When one of my male bulldogs got UTI's the vet worked with me and we changed his food to improve the acidic level of his urine as well as adding something to his food. Your best bet is to start by not just adding something to his diet but changing it. Its very uncomfortable to have a UTI even for dogs. Clearly your vet knows very little about French Bulldogs. Like English Bulldogs, Frenchies are a breed unto themselves and saddly the average vet really has no idea how to treat them. I would try to hook up with a breeder or a breeders website for more information. |

yes, I have heard great things about cranberry extract for UTI's for both people & dogs.
grapefruit EXTRACT pills are used as an antibiotic & may help.
I would also add some yogurt to his diet |

Asodophyllis, break open the capsule and give about 1/2 every other day. |

My Dog had UTIs too. But we changed her food to Innova Evo, and strickly stick to that. If she gets a hold of that other kind with corn and crap in it...she gets a UTI. Also, I bought OX-E drops and treats and they really helped everything really really good.
I am not sure if I can give you the OX-E drop website but you can just search it. Nyzmes is the company. |

My lab. used to get uti's and the vet told me to give her tomato juice. I never did this since I can't stand the smell but I did change her food and she hasn't gotten an infection since. |

nothing ruffled, the OP asked if she could use cranberry extract pills.
I was just pointing out that you were asking the exact same question the OP had asked. |

He currently eats Innova and I was actually thinking about chaning him to CA Natural because he seems to be getting bored with the Innova and CA Natural just seems like a better kibble. So maybe that will help? I guess only time will tell, but he is at the end of his bag so I will be able to switch his food in about a week.
I do give him yogurt almost everyday, but have never tried the acedophollis but will look into it. And I guess I will start him on some cranberry extract pills also.
I just really don't want him to have to deal with UTIs all the time, I feel bad for him! So I will make some changes and see if any progress is made.
Thanks for all the suggestions! |
