I just purchased a puppy from a breeder on friday noticed she had diarrhea contacted breeder said fine e-mailed again saturday and sunday telling him she had blood in diarrhea full of mucous. He said she was fine just wait a few weeks cause she was wormed and that is the worms coming out well first thing this morning she went to vet she has numberous bacteria in her stool along with the worms. She has giardia trichomins etc. She is on prescription med another wormer special food she has to go back in two days do i have any recourse on this breeder in michigan? If i would have listened to him she would have died and they aren't ruling out parvo until 24-48 hrs from today if medicine cures her then ok if not test for parvo. She was my sons birthday gift. please insite

Well that is sad. Do you know anything about the breeder who sold you the dog?

what does your contract say about illnesses & conditions?

I can't imagine it would matter when you did not provide necessary immediate veterinary care.

most breeders contracts require a vet check of healthy puppy w/i 48 hrs

the "breeder" is not a vet.

No I don't think you can go back on the breeder. Your Dog had worms, he may have treated her and expected her to be fine. Puppies have worms its not abnormal. Most breeders worm three times before they send the pups home but some do not. You really don't know if he did or did not worm her. Worms don't go away overnight once you've wormed the Dog so its likely that he did worm her and the stress of the move added to the intestinal distress she had. Just because the vet found evidence of worms does not mean that she had not be wormed.

As a responsibale pet owner it is expected that you take your new pup to the vet and have her checked out anyway, so she wouldn't have died.

my vet said when i had her checked out that she giardia.couple days of meds and she was fine,i know i'm lucky in that she didn't have parvo.my breeder did say that he had wormed her the correct amt of times.i asked my vet about my breeder(if he had ever heard of him) he said not directly but had pts that were from him and they were all very healthy.can pups still pick up giardia even after being wormed?

Yes Puppies can get Giardia even after they are wormed. The ONLY wormer that I know of that takes care of Giardia is a 5 day in a row round of Fendbendazole (Safe-guard), but really it is the Metronidiazole (sp) that takes care of it quickly.

The other bad things is that Giardia does not always show up in regular fecal exams. There have been several times my Puppies have tested 'clear' of bacteria and worms and yet a little later people are saying they have Giardia.

Which isn't that surprising, it is the most common protozoan that causes diarrhea in the United States. But most vets don't tell people that. They rather come back with a scary diagnosis and a big vet bill.

Kind of like the person that was complaining about strongles....ohh nooo!!

It has NOTHING TO DO WITH CLEAN OR CARE EITHER. Actually it is very easy to contract. Puppies can get it from drinking from standing water (a puddle) or if a person has well water.

Some worm meds. take of this problem but it won't be effective if the Puppies dishes, toys, blankets, and pens are kept clean and disinfected. That includes kennels and pens. I would also assume if Mom isn't kept clean either and of course the pups themselves. That would be a responsible breeders job when breeding pups. That is so sad and a shame that your new puppy suffered like that. I have never heard of this before and I am a breeder!!

coco, I think you are saying exactly the opposite of what you mean here. you say worm meds won't be effective if everything IS kept clean.

to call yourself a "breeder" & say you never heard of "giardia" is quite baffeling.

Check your state laws. Many states have puppy lemon laws, and no matter what the contract says, and no matter that they give you 48 hours, if the Dog gets sick within the first 2 weeks the breeder may be responsible to reimburse you up to the cost of your dog. Go on line and look up what your state's guides are.

I know it didn't I was responding to the poster assursion that it could have died. :) I was trying to say as a good owner you need to take your new puppy to the vet for a well puppy check and they would catch any problems regardless of anything a breeder tells you. It seems to me the buyer in this case was not going to do that.

Giardia can also be found in animal feces, including geese and other wild animals. It is transferable to humans, too, so make sure you clean up after the pup really well.
