you can use the old style kitty litter and cover it over with a layer of paper towells...use a very shallow litter pan.....this works well....good luck

Puppy Go Potty carries litter boxes for dogs and the 'litter'
I have used it before, easy to clean up and masks the urine smell. I just found it wasn't a large enough area for my dogs, they like to search a huge area for an adequate spot to make a mess!

My Chihauahua didn't care for the litter box so we put down a cheap felt backed table cover and then covered that with potty pads. That worked great. Every couple of weeks I'd throw out the table cover and put down a new one. The nice thing about using potty pad vs litter is when you travel with your Dog they are easier to take along.

if it works for you go for it.just watch the litter on their paws.i don't think it's healthy for them to ingest.if it will help try getting some of that indoor /outdoor carpet fake grass stuff.most garden centers sell it.it's easy to clean and might make it easier for them to litter train.

I used a wrapping paper caddy (I cut a lower lip for Red to get in when she was small) and I lined it with Pee pads. It worked well until Shiner decided that Pee Pads we way maore fun to play with (shred) all over the house. As soon as we would lay down a clean one, he would run off with it and destroy it. We eventually began moving the bin closer to the door and eventually out of the house. Red pee'd in the bin for quite some time after it was outside. It worked well for some time. Now we are completely away from it.

I tried using the Puppy pads, unfortunately my dogs would always pee on the edge, then the pee went under the pad and it was a huge smelly mess. Also, my cat started using the puppy pads, then once the cat urinated on it the dogs would go beside it. I know a lot of people that use the pads and they swear by them, but they also have them all over their house. If you are going to go with the paper, put it in one spot only and don't move it.

I adopted a 5 month old toy Poodle that was being trained to a litter pan...neither me or the pup liked it...she didn't like getting in the pan ,really didn't like the litter on her feet and I didn't like a trail of litter all over the house...it took a while but I finally ended up putting the empty litter pan outside and she went in it for a while then just gave up using it.Much better for both of us.
Personally, I wouldn't start it because it is like starting training all over when you want your puppy to go outside.

I always taped the edge down with masking tape. It didnt prevent it from going off the edge, but it helped hold it in place.

I totally hear you. Thats why I used the table cloth under her pads. I always made sure the edge of the table cloth was a good four inches wider than the edge of the pad, to catch any spills. After a week or so I'm just toss it out. I got them at the dollar store so I didn't feel bad throwing them out.

Some of my clients turned the edges under on the pads and that seemed to help their Dog not pee on the edge.

i'm just afraid beacuse the puppy will be so small even when its full grown that in the winter it will be to cold out. and also for when i go back to school next year i want the pup to be able to go to the bathroom if it has to when i'm gone for a few hours and i'm not there to take her out
