I have a 2 1/2 year old female beagle. Our only other pet is a 1 year old male shar-pei/lab mix. Both are fixed and we have had both since they were Puppies. Lately when they play it is like the Beagle doesn't know they are playing and she gets mean. She has bitten our other Dog about four times. This just started about 2 or 3 weeks ago. We are expecting our first child in September and I want this behavior stopped now. Any ideas?

It might not be a bad idea to have a professional trainer come over to observe the dogs and how they interact as well as how the family and the dogs interact. With that said, let me give you a few pointers that may offer insight into her behavior. You are pregnant. Your body is giving off new scents that a Dog with a sensitive nose will pick up. This is changing her world. She knows to protect you as her pack leader. She may be trying to remind the boy Dog of his place. Do they fight when they are alone or only when you are present? Are there other family members who they fight in front of? do they fight over food or just when they are playing and it gets too rough? The Beagle may have a sore spot that you are not aware of and when she turns a certain way or he touches that spot it may be painful. Try massage and see if she flinches when you hit a certain spot on her body. She was about a year old when you got him. He may be trying to dominate her as he is almost two ands sometimes that is when males seem to Mature and get "uppity".Again, without seeing them, I am just guessing. But Hopefully my words will help some. Thanks and happy gestating!

I totally agree its time to bring in someone to help you. Do it sooner than later. Its worth what ever it costs.

Because I agree with much of what Kathy has said but I'm going to take it a step farther.

Not only are your smells changing but my guess is so is your attitude to the dogs. Not in huge ways but little ways that they pick up on. I'm guessing this is your first child yes? How often do you rub your belly or rest your hand on it, in a days time? If your normal at least several times. When one of the dogs jumps on your lap or trys to jump on you,how quick or you to shield your belly? If your normal, Your quick. After you found out you were pregnant your views on the world started to shift, its a normal healthy part of becoming a mother. Now your seeing the world as a slightly scary place that you will need to protect your baby from. Things you never thought that much about now seem more important.

Soon if not already, Your mother, his mother, your sister, sister in-law,strangers on the street suddenly feel the need to "inform" you on everything. OFTEN they will start saying things like, "Oh honey you can't let those dogs run around in here like that, you have a baby coming" "Doesn't their playing worry you? What if they do that when the baby's here?" "Is that Dog hair on your chair?" "Don't let the Dog in the babies room it will jump on the crib" Bla Bla Bla..... Well meaning all of them, but misinformed. If you've started setting up the nursery or your bringing baby stuff into the house let your dogs smell it and be around. Let them be apart of this wonderful time with you, just as you would an older child. Remember you haven't died from a little bit of Dog spit or Dog hair nor will your baby. :) Millions of toddlers have been accidently knocked over by a Dog and I haven't heard of any deaths yet. :) Babies learn about the world around themselves very quickly and adjust to it. Even if that includes ringing phones, barking dogs, or honking cars. :)

Congrats on becoming a non fur mom. :)

They do only fight when I am around. She has never done it when my husband is home. Only when they are playing. Also the Beagle has always been really sensitive to touch. She hates being brushed or having her nails cut. So I already know that if he gets too touchy with her she doesn't like it but she has never bitten him until now.

One, when dogs hit two they hit mental maturity and some deside to become leaders and let go of the teenager/young adult mental status.
Your other Dog could have aches and pains as well.

whens the last time you had them vaccinated?

I would try the old rolled tube shape news paper. Slap is againts your leg and command NO. The Hollow pop sound will get a dogs attention. If thdy start to ignor that add a sit still command time out for 3 minutes.

You should be the alpha. You need to start working and moving your submissive Dog up in ranks and putting your alpha Dog in her place.

How are you currently handling it when your alpha goes after your submissive?

Where do the dogs eat? Where do they sleep? Do you walk them together?

You need to work on desensitising your Beagle to touch. You need to do that right away. You can start by changing the way you look at her sensitivity, she not sensitive per say she is really showing you who's in charge. Leader dogs aka Alpha dogs in a pack aren't touched if they don't want to be. When you take back the True Aphpa rule in your pack she will learn to deal with being touched and in time will even learn to like it.
