Ok, Im caught between wanting a Neapolitan Mastiff or an American Bulldog. I live in a large apartment with my mom and she obviously prefers the company of a bigger Dog than a small. The apartment we live in, does NOT allow Pit Bulls( APBT's )and Rottweilers.

Which would proabably be less active during the day ? and what would require more of an excericise demand ?

Im also looking for something that will guard my apartment as well because im hearing and seeing alot of strange things going on lately.

I have experience with other dogs including mixed breeds and ive trained dogs in the past. But more than likely im going to be taking it to puppy and obidience classes.

I also heard that there is no such thing as an " apartment Dog ". There either suitable or non suitable depending on the dogs energy level. Ive even seen small dogs that can't live in apartments so I know a Big Dog could live in an apartment with proper excercise and training and socialization.

So what would be better fitted for me ? Please no small dogs.

i dont think either one would be the one for you. being in an apartment is not the greatest thing for a big dog, but, i will agree that with the proper care, you can make it work.
if you are thinking about security...i dont think either one would do in my opinion...neither would worry me and im a female. i will tell you one heck of a security/guard dog....this would be the bellgian malanois. they are not huge and they are very very smart. what about a doberman?? since this Dog will be a huge part of your family for many years and will be filling in as a duel purpose breed, do your homework on this one. read, read, ask,ask....the right decision is very important and the proper training for this Dog will be of the greatest importance. good luck!!!

There is something on xxxxxxxx called the petfinder machine.Or something like that. You can easily find it by going to quiz central.

I know I say this to everyone but...you can always get a Cockapoo. They can come in 3 sizes:small med. large. They are very god guard dogs.(or at least mine is.)They are quick learners too.

I hope this helped.

are you sure the LL isn't saying "or that type of dog"?

I would run pictures past him before going any further. I can't imagine barring pits & rotts, but allowing the ones you mentioned.

most BSLaws also include "or any similiar type dog".

i dont know either, however i do know that 10 years ago when we bought our home, the insurance company would not cover rotts or pitts without an added liability policy of which i purchased because we had rotts at the time. i have had to reason to check on this again..im not sure what is on the list at this time. i would imagine that more than likely the list has grown, however, im sure they dont mention every breed who can be used for security purposes. i would think that mosst landlords would go by what their insurance would cover. to me, i wouldnt allow large breeds anyway period because of the added liability, the destruction of the premisis and plain and simply out of respect for the other tenants. i cant imagine whay a landlord would allow a big Dog on premisis. i think these are the dogs for renters in single family homes or homeowners, however, this is my opinion only. if you allow one tenant, you have to allow them all. the barking alone would be defensive to the non Dog owning tenants, not to mention the threat to people who may even be afraid of a dog. what do you think??

He allows the ones that I mentioned because they aren't " PIT BULLS ". He said it himself. He said an American Bulldog is what it is, a Bulldog breed and a Neapolitan Mastiff is a Mastiff type breed. THATS IT ! Plus there are no BSL laws in my state. He told me specifally, a Bulldog is a bulldog, a Mastiff is a mastiff.

He doesnt care if it looks like a pit bull because there are tons of dogs that look like pit bulls or rott mixes when they really aren't. In reality if we state that the Dog isnt a pit bull or have proof, then it doesnt matter. He also said alot of apartments these days do not know the difference between a pit bull and mastiff. Its just the ignorance these days. He also doesn't care about mixes either. Because either way the mixed breeds.

he sounds like a pretty indifferent LL. you may find it difficult to get any work done the apt needs.
