We have a female Beagle and every since we got her on 7/7/7 we have had a constant battle with what we thought were hot spots. We purchased her as a 2 year old, as my husband and son hunt and show beagles, knowing that she needed groceries in her tummy, a good flea bath, and a good worming, she was poor in my opinion. She went directly to our vet before coming home, rabies, brucellsis test, and a skin scrapping on one area that we thought was a hot spot but could be mights, he found nothing on the scrapping, we brought her home, gave her a seven way vaccine, cleaned her ears and treated for earmites, wormed, bathed, and quaranteened her from the other dogs, during the course of the months we have had her, we have been to 3 vets, she keeps getting the "hot spots" with no signs of anything, upon treating her for everything, The latest vet we took her to says allergies, but would need to do some bloodwork with no medication for 12 weeks prior. (we are giving her a shot every month which somewhat clears it up, but by week 4 we have raw spots again) She constantly chews and scratches with out them. WE have tried switching food, any suggestions? |

ouch!! sounds like you have spent a fortune at the vet.
here is what i would do on my own... 1. bathe her in chlorohexadine shampoo. (look for changes) 2. change her food to something more natural(dane can help you with this) 3. bathe her in malaseb shampoo (look for changes)
4. spray her spots with GentaVed Topical spray.(tell the vet you want this) 5. if all else fails, try using childrens liquid benedryl.
she might have flea allergy dermatitis. |

I wouldn't suggest giving a unhealthy Dog any vaccination let alone a seven way vaccine. You should wait till your Dog is healthy before treating with vaccine. If you can find a vet that will do a elimination diet if u can't find one I suggest feeding your Dog a one meat protein for 2 weeks try to use a protein that ur Dog has never eaten before such as rabbit or venison. If u don't wish to feed a homemade raw a innova Evo has canned food that is only meat. If it is food related allergy then u should see improvement just make sure to eliminate grains. In the diet. Did ur vet check for mange? |

except for her patches of hair loss that come and go she is very healthy, now that we have her on a good worming schedule, and feed, and extra feed on the days she is out hunting, she has been checked for just about everything, mites, fleas, mange, and as one vet told us, she has had enough ivomec to kill anything,We frontline everymonth, faithfully. we worm every 28 days faithfully, our beagles are considered working dogs and are always out and about and our vet knows that we want to stay on top of things, plus with traveling and showing them, I feel that is even more important. We feed a product called Sir Johns, made in the boot hill of MO, but I have tried her on Iam's puppy, it is what I had on hand for a litter of pups, and now I am feeding her propac puppy, She won a few bags at a recent show, and I loved what it did for a litter of pups I tried it on, so I thought we would try it on her. But no improvement, the steriod shot is about a week past due and I am trying to hold of on giving it to her, we orginally did think a flea allergy, but she hasn't had fleas since about the 2nd day we owned her, and surely that would be healed by now, She is quaranteed right now, up off the ground in an above ground pen, she has a ply wood box and a wire run, so she can't be in her waste, and she hasn't been turned loose to chase the bunnies since before her last shot. I would just love for her to have relief!, and yes we have spent several dollars at the vet, that is just part of being an animal lover, and Our philosiphy is, it is better to keep the maintence up on them and keep them healthy as to have them sick, just like the house and car, take care of them and you'll have lots of enjoyment out of them. |
