Our cross shizu/westhighland terrier is going to have Puppies. I am worried that one of them is going to be a runt - do I have to get a bottle and baby formula in, just in case the runt doesn't suckle?

I don't know a lot about breeding and Puppies etc, someone else on here can take care of the details. But having a runt puppy should be the least of your worries. You should have powder and bottles around for all the Puppies in case the mother can't nurse, you should have a vitamin supplement around for the mother for the few days after she delivers, you need money set aside in case of an emergency c-section and puppy vet checks and vaccinations. It just doesn't seem like you are very prepared for this if the only question you have is about a puppy that may or may not be a runt. Please contact your vet or at least do a search online so you can be ready for your Dog in case she needs you.

first of all, it is "shih tzu".

even tho she is already pregnant, you need to understand that it is very wrong to breed dogs when you know nothing at all about breeding.

there many things you need to have ready. a scales, some way of identifying each puppy incase they are all the same color, bottles, formula.

do you know if your vet does his own emergencies or send to an ER clinic? do you have the phone #'s & know where the ER clinic is?

here is a lot of info you need to read

What is done is done. Yelling at this person and judging them isn't answering the question.

You may get a runt, and you should have milk replacer on hand. Babies being supplemented need to be fed every few hours, but you should also encourage nursing.

I do my best to NOT supplement the first day or two, if I don't HAVE to. I just keep placing the pup up to the nipple, because really, just like with human babies, breast milk is best. Especially a weak puppy needs the colostrum, nutrients and immune benefits from the mother's milk.

However if the puppy is becoming dehydrated you will need to give it something. Formula. Or a TINY bit of sugar water or corn syrup/water can some times boost a fading Puppies energy enough for them to nurse on their own.

I mean, I could go on here all day, about what you can/should do, but at the end of the day , you need to be prepared that you might lose a puppy or two. Or something may go wrong and you could lose them all. You just never know and you are at a disadvantage of being inexperienced and not knowing what you are looking at.

I would highly recommend that you go to a pet store or library and get as many books as you can on whelping dogs, and Puppies.

Good luck.

everybody has a good point with all of this, but i agree what is done is done.maybe this person should not have bred her Dog ok fine, but her chief concern now should be the health of the mother and the pups.hopefully all come out well and nothing goes wrong.if there is a runt i hope this person is able to care for it properly.good luck with this and maybe after all is done get her spayed.

heres my issue. a Shih Tzu westie cross?? what on earth is up with that?? not only are they 2 completely and totally different types of breeds, they do not or would not compliment with each other in any way, shape, or form. they arent even the same size, body build, nothing!!! now, with this said, who on earth would breed such a mix and the question here and the most important one is what is this Dog bred with????? this person cant even spell the breed of which she has, nor, did she think ahead before taking on this flop. there is much information on the web about whelping and the library is totally free. you would think that a runt would be the least of her concerns?? what is up with that?? runt?? the only question she has is about a runt??? crap for all we know she may have let a great dane get to her and if so, i dont guess i would need to explain the rest right??? the whole runt thing wouldnt matter.
