my Dog is already not handling the heat well and it's only april.i make sure she always has clean/fresh water.what i've decided to do is get her a little kiddie pool.not the bigger one but just enough to keep her cool.i don't plan on putting alot of water in just enough to keep her cool.any pros/cons would be much appreciated.

my danes sleep in them

unless it cant get over the edge of the pool Im not aware of any hazards to doing it, if the Dog really likes it I would add fish oil to the water just to keep the coat from drying out.
Skeeters are a problem though so buy a cover or dump at night to keep them from coming around, or do a repellent, natural if possible

Its a southern thang, like dawgs, taters, and anything you see coming from Jeff Foxworthy or Larry the cable guy.

Fish oil can be found at dollar stores to super health stores, i use both cod and salmon.

I use blocks of ice. When it gets hot out I put a couple of containers of water in the freezer every night and take a couple out and put the ice in each of my rabbit hutches in the morning. They love itand tend to sit near the ice most of the day. It could work for dogs.

Have you seen the new toy thats like a cake pan, and you freeze water and toys in it and the Dog can get a new toy when it thaws out enough, I thought that was a messy but pretty cool idea.

Is this a double coated breed? Its always been my understanding that its better not to put a kiddie pool out for a double coated breed.

yes she is a corgi.so my understanding is she does have a double coat.just curious but why is it bad for a doucle coat not to have a kiddie pool?

I'm not offering this as fact, its what I've read on here in the past. Some believe the double coated breeds hold the water on their skin and in the heat it can actually make the Dog hotter than he would have been without the water. Its worth looking into.

Thats intresting. We usually will use a kiddie pool for our husky during the summer. I do notice it takes forever for her to dry off and the water will actually clump up her fur in a weird way. She is my first double coated breed. I would think if you let the Dog sit or lay outside directly under the sun for a long time after swimming they would overheat. I do know being wet and sitting under the sun does feel a lot hotter because when I use to go tanning I would spritz myself with water which really didnt help with the heat. My Dog will usually do her sprints then lay in the kiddie pool...after awhile we will bring her in..we don't let her sunbathe after swimming. It seems to cool her off before she comes inside. Also we have ice packs which we will leave on the ground for her to lay on.

It is interesting and I wish for the life of me I could find the post that people talked about it. Someone posted information that said not only is it not a good idea to let a double coated breed get wet and then stay in the heat or sun they also posted that the water trapped against the skin can get so hot it boils and burns the dog. I think I have since seen something about it on Animal P. where a vet was telling the cops the same thing. But don't quote me on it. Its something to think about and research for anyone who had a double coated breed at least.

thanks, i never would have thought of that, but it does make sense.kind of like when a firefighter gets all sweaty under their heavy gear, they can actually get steam burns.well i do want to keep her cool ,i'll just have to dry her off,and brush her really well.but i will definately look that up. thanks again
