Does anyone have any good ideas as to how to give my Dog a pill? She has pancreatitis so she can't have anything fatty like hot dogs or cheese. But she keeps spitting the pills out. Any ideas? |

I have one Dog that I medicate with pills two times a day. He makes this very easy by being completely cooperative and taking the pill from my hand. He has always taken anything I have given him without issue or protest.
On the other hand my other Dog Red will not take her pills unless they are flaxseed or fish oils (they must be very tasty). When it comes to giving her pills, I must open her mouth and place the pill in the very back of her throat.
With her I must get the pill into that little bit of foamy/slimy stuff at the back of the throat, otherwise it will come back up. |

will she eat raw turkey? it has very little fat and the ground makes for easy hiding. There are fat free hot dogs out there btw. tune in water might be another idea since its low in fat and has a high smell. sometimes Ive had to desolve the pill in a small amount of water and get a syringe to suck it up and shoot it down the throat as some dogs will learn to bite after so many fingers have been put down their throats. |

before desolving pills it might be a good idea to check to make sure the pill was not designed to desolve in the intestines.
I know there are several human medications that can not be desolved for this reason. I dont know if there are any animal medications that act in the same way. |

Some medications can not be given with cheese or any other dairy products.
One of Rico's Medications specifically states not to give it with Cheese or other dairy products. |

Try some pill pockets.I think they only sell them at the vets. But anyway you put the pill inside and then yo close the opening. |

Pb has a high fat content so not good for dogs in this area.
Good point on the digestive breakdown though. |

First let me say how impressed I am with this forum. This was my initial time of posting on here and I am amazed at the responses and how quickly they came. Secondly I have to say that this idea is GENIUS!!! I went first thing this morning to Petsmart to see if they had Pill Pockets and they did - Greenies Pill Pockets. I just put in the pill closed it shut and Ella ate it right up. It was low in fat and she had no clue what she was eating. It was only like 6.99 for 30. Thanks for this idea! |
