Hello! My name is Carrie and I happened to stumble upon this site while looking for Dog allergy information. I have two dogs, one is a Border Collie and the other is an Australian Shepherd. My husband and I just recently moved to Utah from New Mexico and ever since we got here, my border collie has been suffering with horrible allergies. She chews on her feet so much that the pads are sore to the touch and she can't hardly walk. I've taken her to THREE vets and all three just told him it was allergies. They checked everywhere else on her but found nothing. One of them even did and X-ray on her foot. One vet gave me steroids to give to her and those worked wonderfully but the minute the prescription ran out, she started chewing on her feet again. I bought some Dog boots to put on her feet and she hasn't chewed her foot for about two weeks, but she's still limping and in the morning she cries when she tries to stand up. I'm running out of things to do to help her. I have her on asprin to help with the pain, benedryl and fish oil capsules but nothing seems to help her out. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm tempted to just take her back to the vet, but the only problem is, the minute we walk into the office, she quits limping. The doctors believe me, but it's still weird to have her just act like that at home. Thank you for taking the time to read this long post!

did the vet mention the possibility of a fungus or yeast infection or grass allergy?

mix witch hazel & water & put in something such as a litter box. have him stand in it for several minutes, rinse well.

don't let him on any ground after you have washed his feet.

Yea I really didn't want her on steroids. She's overweight as it is and the steroids just made her more hungry. It seemed to help, but I don't know if it's a good idea to be on them all the time. Thank you for the advice on the witch hazel. I will give that a try

Try giving her bottled water and have your air ducts cleaned. Also have your carpets cleaned if you have not done so already. Have you changed brands of cleaners since you moved? Stress can also manifest in different ways aka excessive licking of feet.

Steroids are one of those fake out drugs and can actually make the problem worse.
Have you changed Dog food brands? What is the differenet type of landscape?

In natural rearing the few times I have seen anyone say anything about allergies it was advised to use pro botics and other soothing things like witch hazel. Im really surprised that the vet didnt put him on benadril.
Boost the immune system, and make sure the Dog foods are the same as some plants will vary in how they make the foods, and the ingre. will be from different locations. However this sounds like a typical grass reaction that is common with dogs that live on sod, and its actually more of a reaction to all the chemicals they put in the sod rather than the sod itself.

Well the air is a lot more dry here. My husband and I's allergies have been acting up ever since we got here as well. Which is weird because you would think with the dryer air they would straighten out. Oreo was on Science Diet for sensitive skin and within the last few days she quit eating. So I put her on canned Dog food to see if she would try and eat that and she doesn't. I've got another vet appointment this evening b/c the not eating is really concerning me.

I do have some alternitive health advice but it was edited, not sure why but whatever, you can email me at kabukienot@yahoo.com to get the information.

FYI science diet is very much agreed upon by this forum and any one not trying to sell it that its not a good food. Corn is bad for dogs, they are meat not plant eaters and ill before you think im a weirdo.

there are a few of us including myself that feed raw, then I think to name a few, some use innova, canadian, and costco type foods, holistic foods with no corn or wheat are ideal, they have to have some kind of meal in them to hold the kibble pieces together but the further from the top of the ingr. list the better.
I offer chicken soup for the Dog lovers soul as a snack food for my dogs, the first 4 are meat sources, the more meat sources the better varriety of nutrition as no diet is 100% complete just a 100% complete to the scientist's best knowledge.

I hope to hear from you so I can share information on how to help you and your Dog naturally.

here is the SD for sensitive skin

Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Pork Meal, Dried Egg Product, Soybean Oil, Flaxseed, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Chicken Liver Flavor, Potassium Chloride, L-Lysine, Iodized Salt, DL-Methionine, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Calcium Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, L-Tryptophan, preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Taurine, Beta-carotene, Rosemary Extract.

I will never understand how they can promote this crap as good for anything.
corn, soy & wheat are known allergens to dogs, brewers anything is a waste product from the beer industry & is the first listed ingredient, ingredients are listed according to weight just as human food is.

look at the difference between this stuff & a holistic food
you can google holistic foods for many options. not organic - holistic
there is a difference

chicken soup for the Dog lovers soul, its not the best out there but it is affordable more so than the others.
Note, anything other than meat, bone and organs is not something a Dog needs, they can not break down complex carbs so grains, fruits ect are all poop in the end.

Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, ocean fish meal, cracked pearled barley, whole grain brown rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), white rice, oatmeal, millet, potatoes, egg product, tomato pomace, duck, salmon, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, salmon oil (source of DHA), choline chloride, dried chicory root, kelp, carrots, peas, apples, tomatoes, blueberries, spinach, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, yucca schidigera extract, L-carnitine, Enterococcus faecieum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces cerevesiae fermentation solubles, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

Thank you all for your input. As I posted before I went ahead and took her to the vet again. It turns out she has severe nerve damage in her left shoulder. She has lost all muscle mass in that leg as well. They put her on steroids for the time being b/c that seems to be the only thing that makes her feel better. They do not want to keep her on that forever though so I have to take her to get an MRI to see how extensive the damage is. There is also a small chance she may have a tumor on her spine or in her brain but the vet just thinks it has to do with the nerves in her shoulder. The MRI will tell us for sure what is going on.

10 week old Chihuahua and potty trained... You have weeks, likely months of training ahead of you before he will be potty trained.

You need to deside litter box or outside and then stick to it. Second he's not waiting to potty when you come in, your just not reading him well enough to know when he needs to potty and likely going in to soon. When they are pupppies it seems like it takes forever in the beginning to get them to go. Take him out the "the spot" and say hurry up go potty, potty potty potty and Good boy when he does potty. Try to keep him focused on his mission. Don't play with him. Just when you think you think you've had enough wait two more minutes. Take a watch if you need to. Time seems to drag when your waiting on a puppy to potty in the rain, sleet, snow, wind, blazing heat, dark of night. So people tend to give up too soon. Set a schedual for him to potty and stick to it. At first your going to need to take him out or to his potty spot every 30 minutes hes awake and right after eatting and sleeping.
I wasn't kidding when I said you need to be in this for the long haul, this Dog isn't going to train in a week or two weeks. But always keep in mind you are going to have this Dog for 18 years or so. IF it takes the better part of the first year to potty train him, five years from it won't seem like it was that bad and you'll be greatful you did it.

I have a three year old Chihuahua who is 100% housetrained. When we leave the house she has full roam of the house. It took months of dedicated training to get her where she is but I'm here to tell you it was worth every bone soaking, teeth chattering, middle of the night trips outside to make it happen. Now when we go outside I say, Emily go potty and she does it. After she goes I say what a good girl and we run back into the house. I make going back inside exciting and her reward for going potty. She knows until she potties we're not going back in and so she hurries and get it done. Which is very helpful in a rain storm or snow storm.

Good luck.
