I want to own a Dog either German Shephard or Doberman. I have a 3 year old daughter. This will be the first time that I am going to own. I need advice which one to choose considering watch Dog capabilites as well as good for my daughter.

Both are amazing breeds but both have issues.
Doberman dogs when they rose to popular status thanks to a Magnum PI in the 80s or early 90s I cant remember the breeding of these dogs took off and allot of damage was done. This above most all breeds it is vital to get a Dog that is from a reputable breeder that will know the past three generations at least of the dogs family. If the breeder doesnt boast about genetic testing such as OFA or Pennhip, and cardiac at least, then dont buy, there is a very good Doberman breeder that comes here that Im sure will address this.

German Shepherds, well I wouldn't get a German bred lined but rather an American or German cross would be my preference. True German shepherds will be too intence for you and your daughter to where the American lined dogs tend to be more laid back.
OFA hips and elbow certification on the parents and the more generations back the better is vital as there is a huge problem in the breed with hips and elbows.

I dont know you, but for the average person these two breeds are not advised for first time owners and if you do proceed to get one obedience classes are a must have, both are extreamly smart and will take advantage of an uncertain handler.

Obedince class is a MUST, both breeds always require LOTS of exercise as well and if they don't get it problems can arise

I agree neither would be a good idea for an inexpierienced owner.

go to your local shelter & walk thru, see if there isn't a face you can't live without.

IMO your daughter is much too young for any dog.

you will need to get the Dog out for at least a 30 minute brisk walk every day, rain or shine
