This coming Friday, April 4th, 2008, Oprah is finally doing a show on the horrors of puppy mills. Hopefully it is a touching and educational show that reaches many, many people.

Spread the word and watch Opera on Friday at her normal TV time!

I don't think I've ever actually seen Lisa Ling in any other work. I'm excited to see how the show goes.

Bumping this back up. Even if it doesn't get many comments, I want everyone to see this!!

Someone posted on one of my forums that a group of ppl bought a billboard in the chicago area that said something to the effect "Oprah do a show on puppy mills" and she supposedly saw it. Not sure if thats true or not but thats what I heard.

Its about time a big name celeb did a show on this subject. Hopefullly they will educate ppl as to where they should be looking for a puppy and those places to AVOID; pet stores, mass puppy websites, flea markets, walmart parking lots.. to name a few.

cnn did a huge special on this very topic last year...an entire hour...and it was all about one of the advertisers on this very site.. and they are still going strong.....so...i wouldnt get so excited...these shows do one thing...show Puppies and dogs in need...and send many people flying out to get one...so yes it is good...but...it is not so good...ill say it again....there is good and bad in everything....oprah is all about the ratings..i wish she would do a show on assisted living homes and the horrors behind them...nursing homes and the horrors that lie there...nigerian puppy scams and western unions involvment in them....and...on and on...whatever the show title is..people will remain the same...

Nobody watches CNN.. FOX News is No.1. If Oprah reaches a few 100 ppl out of the millions that tune into her show daily then the show was a success.

One thing about many news reports regarding this subject is that they fail to inform viewers where they should go to get a well bred dog.

I caught the last 25 minutes of this, so I didn't actually get to see the puppymill portion.

I am sure this did some good, which is a good thing, but it just surprises me that Oprah, having as many dogs as she has-- didn't know basic pet owner terminology like she had problems saying 'neuter'.

She also purchased 3 WHITE Golden Retriever Puppies a few years ago. I wonder what type of breeder those came from? I also know that she has had a lot of purebred Cocker Spaniels, normally about 5 dogs at a time.

I wonder how many unsocialized adult rescues she would allow in her houses? It's great to talk the talk, I don't think she exactly walks the walk.

I watched the whole thing today and during the show..probably in the middle, she claimed that in the past she didn't know about any of this..that she got most of her dogs from petstores and other places. Now that she knows petstore pups come from puppymill its unlikely she'll be getting her next pup there and she seemed to understand adopting a Dog would be far better.

i'm not a fan of oprah but it wasn't a bad show.

I am disappointed that it took a $10,000 billboard for Oprah to realize she needed to cover this subject. I really think she should have made this at least a 2 part show. The footage inside those places was really sad and it's all legal and the dogs are considered commodities.

It pissed me off when Bill the sweet rescue guy, wanted to talk about Shrimps feet condition acquired from the mill and Oprah cut him off. I guess it is only an hour show.

I'm happy Lisa got the point in that a puppy miller admitted to them that the usda inspector told them not to show their kennels to the public. Right at the tail end of the show they gave a quick reference to who to contact to work on changing laws regarding puppy mills, so quick I didn't hear it. I'm sure the Dateline expose and CNN did much better, although I didn't catch either show. I for one am glad these rescuers like Bill are helping give some of these poor doggies a life

Oh and the fact that in PA it is legal to shoot the dogs down, what is up with that So anyone can? They didn't say it applied only to Amish

I don't consider myself a big or avid Oprah fan, but considering that many people haven't covered this subject- I think the show was well done.

Much of it was very clear. The percent of puppys in pet stores from mills, how speutering can help, that there are many purebreed dogs in shelters, estimated 10,000 mills in the U.S., etc.

Also, the footage they got when undercover was great.

Oprah did say she never knew about this but that she would never get another Dog again except from adopting a homeless dog. Whether or not this is true is not the issue here. This show reaches millions, and it only takes one person to change countless animals' lives.

I didn't get to see it but it sounds like it was mostly good. I have a question though, did she touch on the topic of responsible/ethical breeders vs byb/millers? I really hope she didn't lump all breeders in the same category. We all know I'm not a breeder anymore. I may be again someday, but that's not my motivation for what I'm saying now.
RB's are where we're getting our best dogs! My 3 rescued Great Danes came to me from people who had gotten sick of them, from a breeder. Not the breeder's fault!
Over the years I've come to appreciate the dedication of TRUE breeders to keep us the breeds we love so much.
I hope Oprah didn't hurt things for small hobby breeders who really are doing things the right way.
Go to rescues first, that's what I told everybody who wanted one of my Puppies. But if you don't find what you're looking for, could be there's a breeder who has the perfect puppy for you and a promise that everything is going to be Ok.
Go Oprah!!!!! For at least having the balls to say things nobody else wants said.

I'm also not an Oprah fan, but I'm glad that more people will at least have been exposed to some of the problems dogs face.

Yes they did touch on the subject. AKC gave a brief written statement saying they have worked for years for the betterment of the breeds and suggest people use a responsible breeder. It kills me though that AKC wanted to make a deal with Hunte Corp. and they are a part of the problem as they register tons of mill dogs.

Bill the resucuer also made it clear "they" rescues don't have a problem with people using reputable breeders and Oprah touched on how a good one will be asking the buyer lots of questions.

They also spotlighted a shelter in TX and showed how they decide who has to go to death row and interviewed the guy who has to do the deed. Arrgg it was sad.

The absolute sickest thing was when they showed how one miller has a hamster type wheel the dogs go out on from their pen and turn all day on the wheel.

I truly wish I would have been more informed three years ago when we got Piper. I'm so sad and upset with myself for not being patient (ya know the instant gratification @@) We lost our beloved Cheyenne from severe cirrhosis after major surgery I contacted a local breeder, she never got back to me and I was yearning another Dog to fill that emptyness and missing Chey. Hubby wanted the kids to have the puppy experience. Hubby and I were mortified watching Oprah yesterday. Well I am ashamed to say the one store they went to with all the Puppies is where we got Piper from. I told hubby right then and there...never again will be buy a dog/puppy we're going to the local shelter like I wanted to in the first place (remember Hubby wanted the kids to have a puppy experience--ugh) ::::kicking myself:::: I am so glad for the interenet, though. I have learned SO much from this forum alone! I wish I would have come here first before supporting puppy mills makes me ill!

Oh, and a side note, we got what we paid for...a crazy, unstable, seperation anxiety, poor immune system dog. She's a mess, but we love her and will keep her to the day she dies.
